Great video, Tom! I had ordered a Vortex adapter but ended up cancelling the order because of the delays with no communication. Now I know. In any case, I have an A2Z adapter, which I still need to try out.

The issue with CT charging is (in my estimation) the 4680 cells in the battery pack. There are a couple of technical issues with that cell besides the dry electrode manufacturing problems. I'll try not to geek out too bad but that cell has fundamental differences from what we saw at battery day. The folded tabs were a great idea for heat transfer (cooling/heating) but that design was compromised by the addition of what some call "spiders" between the tabs and the case. The heat path through these spiders has a considerably smaller cross section than the spiders themselves, eliminating the thermal advantage of the tabs. End cooling shown on battery day has been replaced by single side cooling like in the original Model S pack. That works fine on 18650s and fine-ish on 2170s but the 4680s are more than twice as thick. That makes cooling channels more than twice as far apart with only a 14% increase in vertical contact.

Ridiculous Tesla still hasn't deployed V4 Superchargers, they were first announced two years ago. That said like most EVs you don't want to charge up to 80%, you charge to a lower SOC more frequently.

Six months after we got our Lightning, we installed an offgrid 3.6kw solar array with 10kW of batteries, with a 48v 6kW hybrid inverter/charger, which we use to charge the Lightning through the Charge Station Pro. That, after rebates, will have cost around $4k. We also installed a 12k Btu Mini-split in the garage two weekends ago, that also runs off the 3.6kW of Solar. What we didn't expect was, when we run the mini-split, which is pretty much all the time, and open the door to the garage to the house, it cuts our House electric use by around 20kW per day in May so far...helping out the house AC(Central Texas). Long story short, I get 400 sq/ft of man cave that is cooled, AND, the mini-split is likely going to cut our electric bill by $500/yr. All told, this system will likely pay for itself in 3-4 years, and then we'll be getting essentially free fuel, and be paying $13 electric bills for the next 20 years, until the panels and batteries may be down to 80% efficiency. Obviously, you need the room in your backyard to install 10 x 360 watt panels, and the $5500 upfront cost on the solar array/batteries. Per the Towing hype, you'd have to define "you can't tow" We have an autocross course we run 65miles away, and the lightning can tow a 3000lb car on a 2500lb trailer round trip without an additional charge, so works for my towing use case. We've had the Lighting for a year and half, put 10k miles on it, and haven't ever used a fast charger where we have to pay. Transitioning to renewables can pay off quicker than you think... The longer you wait, the longer it will be before you could potentially have free fuel.

You should do a video where you tow a pro with a pro and then take the towed vehicle off and drive it the rest of the way. It would be interesting if two pros together have the same or more range than one extended battery!

All I noticed was the POSTED speed limit of 65 mph and the car’s speed of 80 mph. That’s 15 mph ABOVE legal max speed The headline should read: SPEED KILLS! Crashing at 85 is exponentially DEADLY as shown in car deaths/injuries each year. BTW, what actually decreases range or efficiency is what is NEVER TESTED: SPEED variability. Passing, acceleration/slowing down, changing lanes as if possessed. 2022 Ioniq 5 at 65 mph yields 3.8 miles per kWh. Ioniq 5 KZfaq reports have shown drivers getting barely over 2 mpkwh! Of course, Average Joe/Jane is convinced, sold, believes, is sure, driving Faster and Faster, is GOOD! Then the TV news reports the deadly crash. RIP Average Joe/Jane. This and other videos PROVE efficiency, range and cost per mile suffer greatly speeding. SPEED KILLS everything.

I know this video is old by now, but I'm curious if you can get the Ford Pass App to limit the current being supplied to the truck? The use case is that I want the limit the number of kW being delivered from the FCSP to the Lightning to what my solar system is overproducing. Unfortunately, even though the Ford Pass App shows the limit I've selected (say 18A), the charge rate continues at 10 kW. Ford can't decide if my problem is in the Ford Pass App or is a problem on the EV/Charging side. FWIW, the truck doesn't have any option to limit the current. My Tesla has it built into the car. Even better, since I have Powerwalls, an OTA made it so the car talks to the Tesla gateway and adjusts itself to use only what is spare. I understand Ford can't get that information, but manual control would have been nice.

The EV onboard charger has to convert the AC power from level 1 and 2 chargers to DC current to charge the battery, so the KWh added to the battery is like 85 to 90% of the charger's output, incase anyone cares, I realized this when comparing the KWh used on the charger's app, and the EV's app that says how many KWh added.

Good: it does charge my 2015 Tesla Model S 85 from 16% to 80 in about 4.5hrs (240 circuit, 40A with a 50A breaker), Tech Support easy to reach, 50/50 understanding language Bad: software crap. Software doesn't detect current battery level, so you either have to set the starting % in the apk on your phone, every time you charge your EV or accept that the error message you will get from the Juicebox is irrelevant. Fortunately the Tesla apk reported the correct information. I am totally disappointed with the software, and solely for that reason, I would never recommend this product to anyone. The information should simply report what charge was applied but to indicate the current level of the battery state and not be able to read the current state is terrible, for all the money the Juicebox Cost, Shame on ENEX

Is there a truck that gets more miles per minute charged than the CT? The Silverado is so terribly inefficient it only charges fast because the battery is twice the size, assuming that actually comes to production.

On which chargers and from which levels of charge. I don’t believe that’s true on a V3 equivalent as used in your video. You can’t comparing a Silverado charging at 800V to the CT charging on a 400V V3. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Please see if you can get a battery temperature graph overlaid on the charging graph. Most people don't run the capacity down to 0% . Doing this will generate a ton of heat. Depending on ambient conditions, above the fact you drove the battery hot and then fast charged it. A cooling system can only handle x. If you go above x, it SHOULD charge at a lower rate to protect the battery, especially in this scenario. Even if the battery can handle what you did to it, (0 -100% fastcharge), this should be avoided if you want your battery to last and not throttle back your power after charging. 30 - 70% is best for fast charging to extend battery life. Many of us forget that thermal cycling is also a major factor in battery degradation.

I've had my KIA Niro EV for 2 1/2 weeks now and on day 2, ordered from Amazon the ChargePoint Flex home charger. As part of a State program, I am getting a rebate check for $250 which will offset the cost. No worries about it's ability to only link to 1 EV, as my spouse won't get an EV for a long time (their next Camry will be a hybrid). Just visited my first public EV charger today, so I'll be ready for my home charging by the time the electrician comes to install the ChargePoint. Yes, my charge lasts 2 weeks.

1) aluminum wire is ok, utility, industrial all use it. It does need to be installed properly and sized adequately for temp rise for continuous duty 2) continuous duty vs intermittent duty is a thing, the AC disconnect is not likely rated for continuous duty 3) yes replace melted breakers 4) if the bus bar can be cleaned up with a scotch pad and IPA this is ok but ideally replace if melted, likely it wasn’t melted honestly, just needed to be cleaned up

I'd test again in 6 months. I bet there will be a big difference as they learn how they charge. It looks like they are slow rolling the charging to ensure the batteries like it in the wild. Though, you would think they could do better off the bat. But the 800v is very new for them.

Tom, what other ev are you comparing the charging speed to that has a 123.4 kwh battery pack? 18 minutes x two = 36 minutes, so for the size of the pack, it's not really that bad. We’ve seen this with the 4680 model y and that never got any updates for charging speed. I think the drawback is the 4680s. So far they have been underperforming and I don’t know why Tesla would have rushed them out into the Cybertruck instead of using 21700s for the time being.
