"Static Pressure Fans" Don't Exist - Part 8: Do Airflow Fans Exist?

In this final part of the series on "static pressure fans" I ponder the existence of "airflow fans" and take a look back in time to where all the nonsense began: marketing. Ultimately, the vast majority of PC fans will perform very similarly in real world scenarios, be it gaming, modelling, rendering, or raw number crunching, and the best way to tell if a fan suits your needs is simply to buy it and try it, with the help of reputable and trustworthy product tests and analyses.

Theres plenty of testing to show that there are differences between good and bad fans in noise, airflow, and longevity. That manufacturers are bad showing their specs or may even be lying about differences in specs doesn't negate that.

Yeah. I feel like some people just aren't as bothered by or maybe cannot hear the noise due to the frequency but I finally put in the money for some quiet high performance fans because I was tired of being able to hear my fans even at low RPM. The specs are almost always a lie or misleading though so the only way to tell is comparative reviews.

But some fans is definitely better in doing radiator stuff and some as case fans. I have Noctua NF-A12x25 fans. I tried to use them as case fans instead of pair of Thermalright tr-121bp. And by placing hand on the exhaust, with same RPMs, there was significantly less air coming out of the PC. So I still use Thermalright ones as case fans, and Noctua as CPU and PSU fan. I agree that most of it is just marketing, similar to CPU marketing ("you NEED Xeon for servers, and i7 for games"). But there's still a difference between fans with different blade count/shape.

Very interesting series! I'm curious if you've ever considered testing the Silverstone Air Penetrator fans - they claim to be designed to modify the flow "pattern" and produce a more uniform output compared to others. The design has a similar-looking configuration to the Nidec unit, with a counter-spiraling static frame behind the impeller.

Yep, I have an Air Penetrator, and sadly it's mostly a gimmick, which is why it died out relatively quickly. The main selling point was, as you say, the improved focus of the airflow from the fan, but this comes at a cost because the grille at the exhaust basically chokes the fan, reducing both the volume flow rate and the pressure performance. Unlike the carefully designed stator vanes of Nidec / Delta (and similar) fans, the Silverstone's are basically a "party trick" with zero advantage over a standard design. I may feature it in a future video. :)

What's funny to me is that the San Ace managed to perform equally to the Nidec in your test in part 6, even though it has a much less agressive design and only 72% of the static pressure at the same rpm. The p-q curves spoil what happened there though

I ve 2x160 front and 1x140 at rear exhaus. I wrongly buy nzxt kraken radiator fans because its tear down of a nzxt kraken cpu cooler and it was very cheap seller have lots of them anyway I bought and put 2 of them top of the case as exhaust now I ve 2x160 front air flow 2x 140 static at the top and 1 x140 rear exhaust. Is that a problem? Can I buy two of them for bottom of the case under the gpu for intake from bottom because they are static press. that I am asking thanks. He is selling them only 7.5 $ and they are original and new brand. You said dont use them together airflow with static pressure. I understood static press can be used against a resistance.

Really liking your series. Would you consider answering the question 2 140 mm case fans or 3 120 mm which has more air flow for a case ? Thanks again
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 6 ай бұрын
Thank you! It depends on the relative performance of each fan, but as a general rule 140mm fans operate quieter than 120mm fans for a given rate of volume flow, so if that's your priority then 2x 140mm is your best bet. I've always used 120mm as case fans purely for convenience because I also use 120mm on my CPU and GPU coolers. All things considered it won't make a huge difference as case fans don't need to produce such high airflow, especially if you have several of them.

As far as i knew that these days' pc fans we use an average of 9 fans that are weak and expensive just for being quiet. Some companies like noctua, corsair and etc focus on simplicity and lower performance while Delta™️, San Ace™️ and Nidec™️ prefer higher performance and design quality at cheaper prices.

Different products for different market. But one things for sure, if it's a "gaming" fan, expect to pay a huge premium markup. This is why I only buy server fans that doesn't even come in a box. The PC building/ modding scene is slowly creeping into audiophile territory.

While interesting discussion and all it completely misses the "noise" part of the equation. Sure, a fan can be both pressure and airflow, not even corsair tries to tell you otherwise. Interpreting SP and AF as a "there can not be both" is strictly personal opinion. You might have imagined that. If you disregard the noise, and how much you pay for it then yeah "any computer fan will suffice" as you say, but that's a low bar.

@Zerao98
@Zerao98 6 ай бұрын
@@FanPhys I went through both just for the sake of it, and no one ever said it's a strictly black and white chose between AF or SP. Jayz uses language of "optimized/optimizing for" while Linus speaks of "high air flow/higer air flow" and "high static pressure", which are separate metrics (a fan can be both, ofc). This whole assumption of somebody making it a strictly one or the other thing is absurd and imagined.

Mentioning Jayz2cents and Linus without explicitly stating that they are both complete trash brings this channel into question. Are you using them to attract the kind of person who follows them?

HVAC Design Engineer here. It most certainly does NOT bring this channel into question. We have literal fan curves that we look at to understand the relationship of pressure, flow, power consumption, etc. LMG & J2C are entertainment channels who simply do not understand the intricacies of engineering. If someone mentions them, the first thing a smart person will do is listen. Listen to learn and then see if what's being said is on basis of established engineering principles or not. I hope they do attract those "followers" so that they can learn about the intricacies of systems design.
