Continue to be impressed by your openness and honesty. (oh, the humanity) It's restful and like a safe harbor in a world of pretense and falsity. Love your hand-stitching. I'm a leatherworker hobbyist, and you did a great job. Don't mess with scissors to trim the edges; they're fine. There are "burnishing tools" that you can buy at online retailers (e.g., Tandy), but you can get by with using household items. The "fluff" along the edge is the "flesh grain/fiber" of the hide, and it will lay down flat and disappear if you wet the edge with water and rub it briskly with a glossy piece of plastic. The heat/friction will cause the loose fibers of the leather to sort of melt together with the natural fats and amino acids, making the edge have a slightly glossy appearance. You can stain the edge first with any shade of furniture-repair marker, or just a dark-colored Sharpie, then rub a little bees wax all along the edge (while the ink/stain is still a little damp), and then burnish with your slick tool. The friction rubbing in leatherwork is called "boning" from the days when leatherworkers, native people's would just grab a piece of smooth bone to manipulate damp hide fibers and make them obey. You can take old wooden thimbles, and use a rattail file to grove/flute their wooden sides with "U"-shaped profiles to match the thickness of your leather edges, then wax the edges and rub them with the reciprocal flute of the thimble, and you'll produce a super neat, mat-finished, rounded edge along the journal that looks fantastic and won't wear, stain, or tatter with use.

Thank you. Your calm voice always improves my day. And the notetaking geekiness resonates with me and reminds me of who I really am and how I was as a child and what I am always trying to get back to. For me it means simply being. Thank you for sharing your stationary tidbits! I especially love the fact that you still care about the Brass Sport even though the Bronze Sport has taken place as top dog. 😊 I'm sure you know, but it never hurts to use something so similar since they are actually different. They each have their own history now. 😁 I have a request for another video if you haven't already posted it... have you done any videos on air travel with your stationary essentials? I know you've done plenty with your backpacking/hiking, but I didn't know if you did much in terms of flights.

Oh that Midori goat leather cover. I have one on my A5 Midori that I use for work, but I've been journaling in the B5 slim for a long time and it is my very favourite. Eventually I hope to get the leather cover for it, SO I am drooling over the patina of your goat leather cover. So gorgeous!

What fun! Over the decades, I find that planners for a detailed life don't make much sense for me. Most of my work time is based on the serendipitous. But, journals! I also have a stash of Midori notebooks and the paper covers (j'adore ça !) but in A6 size. I use the covers for my archived Hobonichi planners as well as my 5-year journals, which are MacGyvered Stalogy 365 Editors Series notebooks. There were details about both the design of the Midori 5-year and the Hobonichi 5-year that simply didn't appeal. How you've set up your Midori notebooks to also work as a planner is a good example too of how sometimes you just need to get creative with the basic forms. Thanks for sharing! ❤

I often had 3 daytimers on the go in the past. Now I use a filofax for Rotary and a Hobo Weeks and its plenty of room. You should really transpose the annual calendar to the 5 year when you want to just harvest the memorable events, notes and reminders....then you can toss the little weeks or your annual calendar planners with all the scribbles and hectic notes most people cram in them. Eventually having a nicely printed/cursive collection of key moments over 5 yrs.

I tried the A6 Hobonichi as a journal, agree too small, and I am not much of a journaler anyway, so I just cut the pages out and tuck them into my A5 Midori work notebook and use them for when I need to write notes for my coworkers….or you could always use it as an ink journal….and oooh you got the bunny Weeks! That one was always sold out, but I don’t use the Weeks anymore anyway. I like Midori MD when I’m in the mood for a toothier paper, and I use the pads for letters, though I just discovered Iroful paper (same company that makes the new TR) Iroful is kind of like if TR and Midori got together and had a baby - love it!!

I started my Midori 5 year journal (I have the colorfully embroidered one instead of the blue; it was very hard to choose which one I wanted) on January 1, 2022. I did play a little "catch up" when I skipped a few days but I am happy to say that I am up to date and doing better at writing every day or two so there are no empty spaces so far. If that happens and I end up with empty days...the world will not end. Or...I will do as @pocketfullofponder (who commented below) suggests...and use a quote to fill the empty day. I was never attracted to the Hobonichi 5 year. I don't like the grid paper in it and I also didn't care for that entire empty page on the right. I don't think it's anymore "cramped" than the Midori for daily entries though. Actually, you may find the Midori five year in the blue even MORE cramped than the Hobonichi so far as how much your can write. It has lines for each day and there are only five of them. It seems the Hobonichi might have more "lines" for each day?

I feel your 5 Year Journal struggle. I always had a hard time because I keep a daily journal, so I felt like I was just doing double work by making an entry in both. And, maybe this is just me and my boring life, but after the 2 year mark it actually got really depressing to see stuff like “oh, on April 15th for the last three years, I did nothing.” Too much pressure.
