We use to bump this in L.A. Schoolly D was one of the Original Gangsta Rap artist. Spoonie Gee was also cracking around this time or even before. I also considered Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Melle Mel and the furious Five as Original Gangsta Rap artists too. There storytelling was definitely a factor. King Tee, Ice T, NWA and others out here were rapping and doing some recording but did not receive much exposure until about 1986, 1987. Too Short, Rodney O and Joe Cooley, Uncle Jams Army, Egyptian Lover and others could also be mentioned as somewhat influencers of gangsta rap. These artists more so entertained Gangsta, Street, Hustle, Disco, Dance and many other Genres.

Cadence might, sounds so similar. Cube met up with T and was thanking him for 6 in the Mornin as inspiration to Today Was A Good Day. T told Cube some of thanks belonged to Beastie Boyz, cause it wasn't till he heard Paul Revere he never even thought about storying rap.

Great to hear you reacting to some Schoolly D. One of my favourites back in the day. He rapped, produced and did all the artwork. This song influenced Ice-T's "6 in the Mornin'" and Eazy-E's "Boyz In the Hood". And this song has been sampled a lot. Also recommend from him "Saturday Night", "Parkside 5-2", "Gangster Boogie" and pretty much anything from the Smoke Some Kill album, but especially the title track, "Smoke Some Kill".

This was 1985, same year as Run-DMC's King of Rock album. It was similar to "Sucker MCs" because it was just beats and rhymes, a style that was popular from 1984 until about 1986. If you haven't already, check out Run-DMC's "Together Forever". And "Check it Out Y'all" by 2 Live Crew. RIP Brother Marquis.

Psk ofcourse means parkside killers, which he wasn't part of, as far as i know, but that bass tho 💥 He had his own record label, so he could rap whateva he wants, as he said. 😸 He and dj code money are from Philadelphia wearing Fila's, prob because of that.
