I can’t believe this video is 11 years old. It’s one of the best learning to ride videos out there.

wow! its great to see someone teach western seating instead of english in a western saddle. If true cowboys (the best riders in the world) used the english in a western saddle method that most are teaching these days (sturups to high and legs to far under you, i call it the pretzle method) they would be mamed or dead in no time. Your riders look comfortable and in control of their seat and hands. very cool.

The principles are the same. You can ride English, you can ride western or you can be a rider that rides HORSES. A western rider and an English rider would gain the same knowledge from a truly good trainer.

Glad you mention that. I've been away from w Western horsemanship for too long. I was watching a Calgary Stampede video recently; the barrel racers shoot outside the arena onto a racetrack to slow down. They trot back by posting English style. My whole childhood growing up on a Quarter Horse ranch, I never saw anyone post English style.

I have a terrible time with my balance. I tend to get nervous and get on my toes which then I lean forward in my shoulders...and I'm sure you know how the rest goes. There are a couple reasons why I believe I do this. One is that I was thrown and hurt pretty bad 2 summers ago and while I've gotten some of my confidence back, even stronger in some areas, I still tend to get on my toes when I get nervous and there goes having good posture. I am working on it, but it seems like I'm stuck. The second reason I'm having trouble is that I ride in a synthetic saddle that has the non fabric fenders, they are the same stiff material as the saddle and I can't seem to get the fenders to stay turned and so my ankles, knees and feet hurt... A lot. But it also makes it difficult to keep my heels down. I ordered a pair of SA Walls twisted and slanted stirrups and I'm hoping they'll be here today so I can get them on and start working on all of this! I've waited 25 years to get a horse while I raised my children and I want to have the best possible experiences with her. Not be bouncing on her poor back and me bouncing and bobbing around and having issues. Your video makes sense to me. And I will definitely be practicing your posture advice. Thank you :)

+michelle hooper Try riding with a bareback pad, I had balance problems and learned it was because it was the strirups with a bareback pad I don't bounce and have a better posture and balance.

william guthrie I had this problem when I first learned to ride. Three things really helped me. The first is to realize that the trot is a two beat gait and it is important to get in rhythm with the horse. The other thing that helped was to learn to relax and sit deep in the saddle and keeping proper position with my feet. The last thing you could do is have someone video you while you ride. Good luck and remember to have fun!

Yes. Keep your heels down. Make sure your stirrups are the right length for you..... not too long. Keep practicing. Eventually your balance will improve and you'll be less dependent on the stirrups.

Learn to ride with your seat. Have your instructor use a lunge line. The seat is everything. From there you can add stirrups and after that, reins
