Great advice Roget but 😱😱just to clarify, trickle vents in windows do not form part of its insulation properties. Its just a new build building regulation. We manufacture frames using multi chambered pvcu profiles, we use co extruded gaskets and the most efficient heat reflective glass, only to drill holes through the frame!! 🥶🥶 permanently drafty & noisy. The windows are tested, classified & rated without trickle vents. If anybody is fitting into newbuild, argue this point with building control & insist you don't want dirty great holes drilled into your expesive A rated window frames!!!! They have a built in trickle vent in the locking mechanism.

Roger there’s a lot of comments so I didn’t go down through them all to see if this was mentioned before,but I had a hall door like that with a letterbox while there is seals and brushes from post coming in the springs get loose and when the wind got up it was dreadful I never like the colour so I changed the door but it had no letterbox put a postbox outside and the difference it made was incredible keep up the good work.

A few thoughts. It was great to see you emphasize the importance of roof insulation. A very small investment in insulation makes a big difference. Considering cost alone, the payback period ,if the project can be DIY, may only be 1 to 2 years and closer to 4 if hired out. Replacing windows is always important if the original windows have failed mechanically as direct air movement between interior and exterior creates the greatest threat of heat loss So, if you're going to replace then replace with the best you can afford. BUT...and this is a big but...the R value of even the best (and most expensive by far) is in the R6 to R8 range but values generally are between R2 and R4. The reality is that replacing existing curtains with quality thermal curtains can lead to the same R value or more as many manufactures have products between R4 and R6 at a fraction of the cost of equal R value windoq units. Between a good quality window and quality drapes, the window area can have, especially in the case of an older home, an R value similar to the walls of the home. A last point ties these together. Because roof area are generally open you have a great deal of available space for insulation. 9 inches of insulation provides an R value of 30. When talk about windows you are maxing out at about R6 and coupled with thermal curtains at R10. Regardless of what individuals choose to do, from a purely ROI perspective, the very first thing everyone should do is see if they can reduce thermal loss through the roof. You said it...if you can, add more.

Watching from Denmark. Here is the best tip you will ever hear. Try building dwellings in the U.K. with better insulation standards and materials. I lived in the U.K. from 1977 until 2003 when I returned to my homeland. Standards here are several orders of magnitude above those in the U.K. However there is a recognizable streak of masochism amongst the population in the U.K. which ensures that poorly built , poorly insulated and draughty homes will continue to be a feature of living there for decades .

Turning your heat down to 1998 is the way forward..

I'm keen on good insulation but I also like the utility provided by my boarded loft. It is insulated under the boards but about 4", not 8".

How about a video on how to insulate floorboards from the under cavity. I removed the carpets and replaced with a laminate, but the subfloor leaks alot of cold air, especially around the skirting boards where the beading is. The entrance hall is the worst ❄️❄️❄️

Great video, i wonder is thermal paint any good on an internal wall? i have an 1850s house which has solid lime stone walls, and beautiful cornice which i dont want removed, is there anyway i can insulate the walls?

Sorry, but "best practices" of building houses in UK are like the houses are in tropical country. Leaving s hole in the door makes all Norwegian people laugh, you will never be able to keep warmth in such a house, especially if the holes around the front door will be so huge (and no, the broomstick in the holes doesn't keep cold temperature out, sorry, dear engineers, it doesn't work like that🤣). Noone should complain about the costs of heating, beacuse the design of most houses in UK have no capacity to hold warmth, of such house was built in in Norway, people inside would be dead after one night, frozen to death, and it would be kilos of snow despite a "fluff" in the pigeon hole. You are effectively sleeping in the streets. Maybe double doors for thermos effect when you don't open 2nd door until you close the 1st, and very very very good thick no-holes door insulation may save the day, but having in mind draught even comes from the walls themselves, it's really not good technologies to keep heating costs low. Alas, if in northern eu and even in central eu countries someone built a house like that claiming it's an all year round house, he'd be fired...

Great video, thanks for posting - it's very helpful! I'd love to see something on attic insulation. I'm living in an old house with literally 15 millimetre's of insulation sitting atop the plasterboard. I'm currently flooring parts of the attic and the joists are about 110mm high so putting 200mm of insultation in isn't a runner if I want space in the attic with a the plywood sitting atop the joists. I can fill the 110 millimetres under the flooring with earth wool but would appreciate your and anybody else advice if I could be smarter about it.

What kind of difference is one likely to see by upgrading windows to low emissivity ones? All other things ignored or the same, just wondering what the improvement just the actual glass brings.

I’ve seen people insulating under their floors on the ground floor. I was wondering what you think about that since heat rises? We have some drafts coming up through the skirting so I was thinking of just putting foam under them where the drafts are coming in.

Hi Roger I am hoping you might be able to help with a problem I have. During the winter I have a patch of what I think is condensation forming on my cavity wall, the walls are insulated I think with the foam pellets but I can't see any holes where they were injected. However this condensation forms at the back of the inbuilt gearbox and I am thinking that there may be a cold spot where the insulation is missing. Do you think if I drilled a hole into the cavity and used a closed cell spray foam it might solve the problem?

Seal up all the gaps around your front door and letterbox, but then create a draught point by installing a trickle vent in the uPVC windows - perfect sense.

This time of year you can usually compare your roof with your neighbours (all other factors being equal). If the snow or frost has melted on yours but not your neighbours then you are losing money.

When it comes to loft insulation, I have approx 100mm, but also I've boarded out the loft, purely to make storage easier. Do the boards on top of the insulation enhance its ability to keep heat in the house or am I kidding myself and need to come up with a better solution?

Quality dad joke👌 We have an open plan staircase from the living room up to the kitchen with a radiator that sits partially in the staircase meaning half the heat meant for the living room shoots straight up into the kitchen. Poorly placed. You can feel the displaced cold air being pushed back down the staircase when the heating is on giving the effect of a draft. Bloody pain
