Come join us in this amazing AirBnB rental, as we stay inside a church in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, Canada while trying the biggest donair in the province. In this episode, we're kicking off our Nova Scotia road trip where we'll be filming over the next two weeks. We’ll share the most amazing AirBnB rental (this time in a converted church!), we’ll try the biggest donair in Nova Scotia, we’ll come face to face with a mastodon, we’ll take you to the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator, and we’ll visit the Bay of Fundy which is home to the highest tides in the world.

What brought us to Stewiacke, Nova Scotia was finding a church AirBnB listing. This summer has been all about finding unique and unusual stays, so this particular listing piqued our interest: 💒 bit.ly/3luwxgt 💒
Once we checked into the blue church, we learned about a restaurant serving the biggest donair in all of Nova Scotia, and it was just down the street from us, so of course, we had to try it. The shaved donair meat is served in a pita with tomatoes, raw onions, and a sweet sauce made with condensed milk, vinegar and garlic powder - that sauce right there is the secret ingredient that sets Nova Scotian donair apart from anywhere else in the world.
The following day, we visited Mastodon Ridge, which is a small theme park with a giant mastodon sculpture (a bit of a random roadside attraction), and a globe that marks the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator. Who knew this was right here in Nova Scotia?!
Our adventures continued as we drove towards Halifax and took a random detour that brought us out to the Bay of Fundy, where we got to witness the highest tides in the world.
It was a pretty fun way to kick off our Nova Scotia trip, so stay tuned for more episodes!

Wonderful visit to NS! It's nice to see that so many beautiful church buildings are being at least saved and remodeled for other purposes (saw that in Quebec as well). Can't wait for the border to be reopened to visit again; I have to try that food (haven't heard of it until now and it looks delicious!). Amazing videos, as you got us used to, with two great people and gorgeous landscapes. What else could we ask for? Take care! Cristina NYC

I have such mixed feelings about this. My husband is an Anglican Priest. He and I know how older people, in rural areas, have struggled to support their congregation while wondering where the younger people are. Outmigration has been occurring for generations in rural Nova Scotia. Recently more Church buildings have been closed and deep sadness and regret are realities among the people who were raised in small Christian communities. It is sad to see this building become another AIRBNB. My hope is that this, once consecrated church, will shelter and perhaps bring some who stay in it closer to their spiritual essence. Perhaps a kind of rebirth will take place and people will find comfort surrounded by storied timbers and glass? We do know that people were buried and married from this church. It is a sure fact that prayers were both said and answered within this space. May God smile upon all who might find their way to this place of intended rest and refreshment.

Thanks Mary. I think many share your thoughts/emotions about something like this. On the one hand it is sad the building is not being used for its intended purpose but I suppose this is better than having it torn down for another real-estate project.

Oh thanks for sharing! I have ALWAYS wanted to visit Nova Scotia! Any rough idea how far the drive is from Toronto? Beautiful place! What is a donaire?
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 3 жыл бұрын
It's quite the drive! About 15 hours from Toronto to the border of Nova Scotia and then it depends where you want to go in the province. I'd say 2-3 days of driving there depending on how many hours you want to put in.

@@samuelandaudrey I am interested in the lighthouses I saw years ago along the coastline of Wisconsin next to one of the Great Lakes. Each lighthouse was different from the other. I understand that was so ships of yesteryears could ID their position day during daylight hours.

Did you meet Mennonites while exploring the Ocean Floor? They’re everywhere. Wonder if they’re selling bakery items like in northeast Ohio near Gambier’s Kenyon College. Mosquito Coast is a favorite book and it’s set in a Mennonite community somewhere near Nicaragua. Mennonites get to more places than you two.

I have mixed feelings about seeing a church converted to another use. God knows there's no particular correlation between a successful Church and a beautiful Church building. The best Church in New York meets in a rented school auditorium, and I've seen many beautiful buildings ostensibly in service as a church where they've kicked God out ot the building. So I can't make any real objection to using an old Church as a B&B. It's probably doing some good, preserving a beautiful old church which would otherwise be torn down. All the same I can't help but look at this with a touch of sadness. For anyone who has known the joy of Christ, you can't help looking at this beautiful place and wonder, why isn't it filled with the locals on a Sunday morning?

Thanks Richard. I think many people feel the same way. Sad on the one hand it is no longer being used for its intended purpose but somewhat grateful it at least isn't being torn down.
