I would say that it’s wise for anyone traveling around the world to develop some good street smarts. I’ve traveled to over 45 countries and been to multiple conflict zones. I’ve had friends and family robbed at gun point, pick pocketed, injured in bombings, had their homes invaded at night by men with AK-47’s, etc. It happens and it’s real. I personally would never travel with a gun due to the legal responsibilities and the real risk of being imprisoned. However, I would strongly advise against the incomprehensible naïveté that we see of westerners who think that “everyone is good” and “nothing will happen to me”. They not only put their own lives in danger, but they also endanger the lives of those who have to come and rescue them. The two Swedish girls who were beheaded in Morocco come to mind, or the hikers who decide that hiking in the Iraq/Iran border was a good idea and were imprisoned in Iran. Overlanding through foreign countries is pretty low profile and if you use common sense and avoid areas where real problems could occur then you should be fine. Just always keep a good head about you.

That's something that can happen when you stay in one place for a while... people see you and your vehicle and start to form a plan. Passing through, the chances of that happening are very, very slim

I found your channel recently and love your videos and no-nonsense advice. The ways the legal system operates in most parts of the world, one would be inviting trouble keeping a firearm for self-protection. Still having a plan and keeping your wits and awareness is necessary. "Don't drive in the dark" - classic advice my grandfather had also given me long ago! Another great video!

Great video as usual! The whole first part I think applies to world travel in general, honestly. I've been fortunate enough to travel the world pretty extensively, and being from the Midwest, I swear people I know have been concerned about my safety in every destination I've visited. In nearly every case, I've felt just as safe (or safer) than I do right here at home. That includes a bit of Mexico, UAE, Japan, New Zealand, India and all over Europe...I will say, the Dominican is an exception. :) Only place on earth (outside of the US) I've ever actually been threatened.

I met an Aussie at a bar in Victoria, BC back when I lived there. I mentioned to him that I'd be nervous to travel in Australia due to the number of things that can kill you. He responded by asking how many people I know who have killed by bears, wolves, cougars, etc.. I'd never taken the time before that to consider that here in Canada we have lots of predators, because they are normal to me, whereas lions, salt water crocs, cobras etc. are all exotic. It's good to hear essentially the same thing from someone with so much real world experience.

As an Aussie that lived in Outback Queensland for several years I have encountered many Dingoes, Spiders and Snakes some deadly some not... They don't want anything to do with humans... Most people that get bitten by snakes in Australia are bitten because they were trying to kill it or chase it away. leave them be they'll just go away.

After my first year of travelling, I decided the best advice was to not take anything you couldn't face losing. I had one gadget for photos, music, texting etc which I made look really old with insulating tape and wore close. Although I did get robbed once, that was once in a decade. They were also very polite - saying they were sorry but they had no money (!) The only people I knew who had serious trouble were those waving super expensive cameras around or drunkenlh going to the ATM after dark.

This is all very good advice especially about guns. Nothing beats common sense and being friendly, regardless of who you run into. Having said that, in Northern Ethiopia I've had to hire members of the local militia as security for a few days. This area sees occasional rebels crossing in from Eritrea and some incidents have occurred. Hiring these people is also a way to give back to a community that otherwise has very little income. We didn't run into any trouble but having locals with us who knew the area and spoke the local dialects gave us added peace of mind.

I was camping in a palapa in Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California. I hung my long sleeve shirt on the palapa overnight to dry off (they have palm fronds for a roof). In the morning I went to put it on and wondered if I should check for scorpions. I decided I should and there was one inside. A bark scorpion, one of the most painful ones.

Great advice. You can eliminate 99% of your risk of getting injured, robbed, arrested by: Staying at your hotel, campsite when it gets dark and waiting until morning daylight before leaving. More bad things happen at night. Don't do drugs and don't get drunk, again especially at night for both of these if you partake. Also, every town has a "bad" or "less desirable" section including the town YOU currently live in. Some area or some person has a reputation for violence, robbery or just a crazy unpredictable rowdy behavior and if not that, there is an area that is more economically depressed than the rest of the town where people may be more desperate. You would not intentionally go to this part of YOUR town and park your car and sleep in it over night. You may not know where the riskier part of town is so it's worth finding that out ahead of time by checking the internet and over-landing/camping Apps and maybe calling or stopping at the Police department to ask their advice.

As a gun owner and enthusiast who DOES take firearms on all my travels in the US, gotta say I agree 1000% with everything you said here. Traveling internationally with a gun is obviously a huge no-go, and the knowledge that you don't have it is going to change subconsciously how you approach a situation. Verbal judo should be a mandatory training module for all gun permitting classes.

@timhardman4764
@timhardman4764 4 жыл бұрын
If you don't have the mechanic skills, make sure you bring extra MONEY with you to pay for repairs. Most all areas of 2nd or 3rd world countries will have talented craftsman who can fabricate a repair for you if they can't get you the part you need. It will take a little longer to find the right guy who can do it and you might have to go through 2 or 3 of these guys trying to do your repair before it get''s done right. But they will get you going again at least until you get to a large city with better resources to get the job done to higher specifications. Learning to become a mechanic takes a long time, decades. What you can do in a shorter time is learn how to use some diagnostic tools (Multi Tool and Code Reader) to help the shade tree mechanic you do find to narrow down the issue and it's cause. Learn about the common failures associated with your vehicle and then carry some spare parts with you for those common failures. Bring an extra set of spark plugs, the oil and air filters you will use on your trip, gasoline filters, and change your maintenance consumables ahead of schedule during the trip. Do a walk around vehicle inspection each morning before you leave checking tire pressure and look close in-front and behind each tire for a sharp object that might puncture you tire (some areas boost their tire repair business by insuring they have customers) Look under the car for fluid or leaks on the ground. If you have a leak, figure it out there before you are 50 miles away from town in some wilderness where your car stops running. Carry a gasoline funnel that can separate water from gas to use when buying gas from plastic or glass bottles on the side of the road. They have a slow flow rate but only buy enough of this bottled gas to get you to the next big town with gas stations. People in this countries like to help and their fees are very reasonable.

I am always sad when I hear about the poor reputation Honduras has. I’ve hosted world travelers from the US, New Zealand, Mexico, and most Central American countries. Yes there are corrupt policemen and dangerous zones mostly in the larger urban areas, but by and large it is a safe country if you take the common sense precautions Dan outlines. The most beautiful regions are on the north coast but unfortunately the Panam Highway crosses Honduras thru the dry south. I understand travelers being wary of crossing the whole country north and then retracing south to cross into Nicaragua. I would advise cross from Guatemala in the northern border with Honduras, visit the beautiful Caribbean coast and then head south. Great video asi que always Dan.

I live in Finland, and whenever I recommend anything to anyone traveling in Scandinavia, it's always this: the thing that will most likely end your trip badly is a big dumb moose. Drive really carefully at dusk and dawn and evade towards the rear of the damn thing if you have to because they are surprisingly fast. The deer are annoying and hitting one will be a really bad experience but won't likely kill you, the reindeer are pretty chill and you will never ever see a bear, unfortunately. Unless you leave your car unlocked with your ipad sitting on the dash for a few days in a shifty neighborhood, you're not going to get robbed. But watch out for the moose.

I brought a shotgun when I drove from Florida to the Arctic Circle in Alaska a few years ago and found it absolutely unnecessary. In fact, it remained locked away for all but one night. I will say, being certain it met Canadian gun law requirements and having the customs form filled out in advance made the border crossing painless. But, I don’t think I would even bother carrying through Canada again (and definitely no other country).

We laughed and said it ain't needed. They had a hard time grasping that we can leave our houses unlocked and travel at large without any heat for protection. The same was experienced in South Africa. Yes, this is a tricky topic. It is a painful process but you have to read every word of the detailed policy to understand what is covered and under what conditions and what you have to do and when you have to do it, to make that coverage valid. Even the best coverage that I have found will not pay for any medical or transport bills where that service is given before you have contacted the insurance company. In a medical emergency, especially when traveling alone, when an accident or medical emergency happens, the last thing you are thinking about is calling the insurance company to let them know what happened, where and when. You may be panicked, fighting for you life, unable to communicate, unconscious...but if you call your insurance company after you come out of surgery and are stabilized, good luck trying to collect for all the medical expenses that have already happened. It is really disappointing to see how most of these companies try to hide or make unclear with technical terms the conditions under which they can and will deny coverage. Also Evacuation expense coverage is only allowed when an onsite doctor says it's necessary for your survival to go to another hospital that can provide a higher level of care for your medical problems. If your injury is not life threatening you may have to get treated and then wait it out in the foreign hospital that you are at. A foreign hospital might prefer you stay there for all the money and inflated rates they can charge a foreigner for procedures, recovery, physical therapy etc... Nothing is as clean cut as the highlights of the benefits listed on the insurance company brochure or Website...you have to dig deep into the details to understand it all. I've bought these policies many times and thankfully, never needed to use them. But I've also often wondered if they would be worth anything if I did need to use them. Before I leave on a trip where i have this medical and repatriation insurance I leave an electronic copy of the agreement and policy details and the contact number to call when you get injured but have not yet received medical care with my emergency contact back home. This way I can call my emergency contact whose phone number I have memorized to let them know I am injured, where I am and they can then contact the insurance company to start coverage on that minute of that day they were called. Sometimes these insurance companies want to dictate where you can go for medical care and what form of transport they will pay for but in an emergency they are more lenient as long as you call them before you start using services (transport and medical). In an emergency, there likely will not be multiple choices for transport and medical attention.

That's the one thing I was thinking. A brit, Canadian, or Aussie will probably be treated better is most countries than an American. If I am asked where I am from in a foreign country (by a random local), I will often just say Canada. If dealing with Gov officials is most countries - I think it skews slightly to benefiting from having a US passport.

Bears can be very destructive. Brown bears and black bears alike. They can totally destroy a vehicle to get at food or anything possibly giving off food like scent. If you're in bear country, I believe it is better to keep your food stuff in a "bear proof" Yeti with a lock on it outside of your vehicle. Rather sacrifice the cooler than the vehicle.

The Road Chose Me yeah that’s the one we get, thank goodness I haven’t had someone try and smash mine, they claim it’s a good product, apparently can withstand quite a bit. I know that if the glass does crack it prevents it from shattering and crumbling so it makes it harder, they have to cut out the film as well. I like that’s it is tinted to make it harder to see into the vehicle, especially at night. Obviously don’t get it to dark that you run into legal issues.

I feel more paranoid about being car jacked, mugged or shot at traveling in the U.S. than in places like South Africa, the Philippines, India. A friend of mine (white young female) spent one entire year by herself around South Africa and Namibia in an old VW van and never once had any bad experience. The only smash and grabs I’ve had the displeasure of going through in 30+ years of traveling happened in Central Europe. Less developed countries aren’t more dangerous by default.

I totally agree with the no gun thing. I have lived in Nigeria for close to 5 years and I drove around myself a lot as well as with a driver. Only in the Niger Delta, towards the end of our stay, we needed full armed escorts (due to kidnapping risk). We traveled quite a bit and have no (real) issues. Only the "area boys" could sometimes be a bit "annoying". In actual fact Nigeria was amazing, the majority of people are super nice. Also if you take a gun you better learn how to use and how to use it well (I have both military training and years of practical shooting training) and I would not like to carry a gun. It escalates everything very quickly and that makes it even worse. On vehicle security there are some things that you can do (on a hard shell car) like special anti-breakage film etc. The thing is, if they want in, they will get in just with more damage to the car. Steel lock boxes are a great thing and always keep your passport etc. with you when you are away of the car in "risky" areas. Be nice, be friendly and don't antagonize officials or groups. 99% of the time, you'll be fine.

As always, you provided very useful information, which was conveyed by a very experienced and knowledgeable man. I did take offense to one comment though. You stated that a person that wants to carry a firearm is not the kind of person that should be traveling around the world. I think a person that wishes to carry a firearm is akin to a person that purchases insurance. If you take precautions and use common sense, and are situationally aware, then home and vehicle insurance is really meaningless to have; but it's nice to know you have it in the very rare case that you may need it. All of us take precautions to avoid trouble, and those of us that take those precautions seriously, will likely never have any issues; rendering property insurance useless; but we still insure our things because to do so is responsible. Owning/ carrying a firearm is the same thing. A situationally aware person who takes precautions will almost certainly never need to use said firearm, nor will they even need to brandish their firearm. It is nice to know though that it is there should things become unmanageable. Firearm owners are not overly fearful people, nor are they people whom are bent on finding or starting trouble. Firearm owners, at least the responsible ones, are folks that realize that on very rare occasions situations present themselves which require remedies that are otherwise unavailable to save their very life. Home insurance will buy your house back for you financially should it burn down. A gun will prevent your death. A person wanting to know if firearms are legal around the world is akin to a person wanting to know if they will get healthcare should they have a heart attack in a foreign Nation. No one plans on having a heart attack, nor do firearm owners plan to use their gun. It is a worthwhile question nonetheless to ask either thing. Best wishes.

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm assuming that most of the people asking you about traveling with a firearm are American. What's interesting to me about that is that as someone who is immersed in the international competition shooting community America is actually one of the hardest countries to bring a firearm into as a non American. You can get permission to bring a gun into just about any country in the world if you are will to work your way through the bureaucracy.
@TheRoadChoseMe
@TheRoadChoseMe 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you can bring them in for the purpose of competition, but I'm sure they have to be transported in locked containers with ammunition separate, etc. etc. It's not like you can drive around with it loaded and expect to use it for "defence", which is what people are asking when they want to know if I bring a firearm internationally.

I’m pro-gun, but do not think you will stash one effectively. As Ade said, there are firearm/ammo sniffing dogs. Your freedom is much more valuable than perceived safety of a gun. Because at the end of the day, if you (God forbid) have to use it, in addition to justifying the shooting you will have to explain how you came into possession of a gun.

@@travelingwithjoe216 Hi Joe. I am pro gun too and i have been a few places and the whole concept of travelling across borders with a firearm is utterly insane. You just can't do it. I think that if a person thinks or feels that they need a firearm then they're not really suitable for travel. A quick wit, smile, positive attitude and friendliness will get you out of trouble before a firearm will. As you say Joe, carrying and using a firearm is just a disaster of an idea. First mistake is there is no such thing as "Common Sense"! All of us have been raised in different environments, experiences and exposures. Not much common about us any more especially coming from western countries going into those corrupt and perhaps more criminal places. I have spoken at a few overland events and one thing I always tell people is that in most of these places we choose to travel we are millionaires. They are not so be humble, don't flash the cash and leave the bling at home. Talking to locals or other travelers is key - get to know the facts from those experienced. Practice situational awareness at home before you leave. Watch peoples body language when you enter shops, communities, etc. That can tell you a lot. The guards at banks, shopping center parking lots and fuel stations are good help. Appreciate them as you did. If we were parked to get groceries or fuel I would solicit the help of the guard and buy them a cola and ice cream and maybe a bit of cash. Vehicle/camp car rental outlets can give you a lot of advice as well. Great video series - thanks

Question about overnight camping out, do you pack everything back in the car before going to sleep, like chairs, fire wood and such? While planning for our trip to South America one of my considerations was that we should always be able to just jump on the driver seat and drive out right away if we felt we were in danger. That said, here in BC Canada, while on a camping trip last weekend, we were harassed at 1:30am by idiots with very bright lights, shouting, loud revving of their engine, and pretending to be cops pulling over a runway vehicle. They terrorized the whole campsite multiple times at night and nearly hit our car as they were driving around. It was the first time I felt that scared in Canada. I suspect that alcohol had a big part to play in this and a gun would’ve most likely not helped in this situation as who knows how they would’ve reacted. Although I did run out to get our axe when there was a safe break, just so I could have something with me. Crazy time Also, thank you for the great videos and all of the incredible insight into overlanding
