Stealing $2,000 from scammers

Scammers love gift cards because they're almost untraceable. I noticed that this group of scammers had conned someone into buying $2,000 of Best Buy gift cards, so I took some action to stop prevent them being used and ultimately return the money to the person who was scammed.
I'm afraid I have to blur some personal details of the scammers on the public KZfaq video to prevent any "privacy" take-down notices from the scammers, but you can see an non-blurred version here: TBA.

@Kuku Patel Probably Grey Hat I'd say. In the IT industry: White Hack Hackers need the permission of the system owner. Black Hat Hackers hack without the permission of the system owner with personal or financial gain in mind. Jim Browning probably best falls under Grey Hat: no permission of the system owner, but without personal or financial gain. Even then, I know some that would say Jim's work could be considered Black Hat just because there is no permission in mind, just as with Hacktivism (hacking with a political goal in mind ... not necessarily personal or financial gain, but usually considered Black Hat).

Gonna be that stupid someones going to find you and most likely make their lives a living hell because personally rats like them don't deserve common courtesy for what they had done too many. Sadly that would never happen. You would think companies would give Jim a reward for stopping fraud, or their agents a bonus for stopping scams but alas they just do not care. I worked in retail for many years and a while we are trained to detect gift card scams, we are often encouraged to let them happen as they inflate or stores daily sales. I once picked up on someone getting scammed, refused to do the transaction only for my boss to come out and take over because that $2000 would let us beat LY sales

@@dyodoleu You could but the police almost never investigate these crimes. Also whenever you call the police to a store, the district manager needs to be informed which creates new problems for the base line employee thinking they are doing the right thing, only to possibly get fired for "going above the managers head" aka out of protocol and calling the cops. The amount of times I called the police to one of my stores only for them to do literally nothing taught me to not bother calling the cops in the first case.

Jim, that’s amazing work. You really were able to make an impact in the life of the scammed person. I have experience with Police in India and I think if you find such scammers henceforth, you should report them to the US embassy in India stating that these are mostly US citizens that are getting scammed. I’m sure that the US embassy in India, with its connections and with its heft, can make sure these criminals are brought to book. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry to hear about your grandma. I hope she's doing ok. These scammers can wreck someone's life saving. I worked with this old man, he was running the payroll at the company. He passed his retirement age but was still working at the company (he'd been working there for most of his adult like). One day he called me to his office to speak to someone on the phone, who supposedly didn't speak English and only spoke Spanish. My Spanish isn't perfect but I could tell straight away that the person on the other side of the phone wasn't Spanish (in fact, he spoke Spanish with a thick English accent). I hung up the phone and informed this old gentleman that the guy wasn't Spanish and that it was probably a scam he was running (at that stage, I wasn't aware that the old man was defrauded of more than 50k GBP. The scammers wanted more money before they will transfer 11 million Euros from the Spanish Lotery (I think it was called Onze). The sad part, this old man was paying more and more, in the hope of getting his winning prize (he was blinded by the hope that it was a legit thing). Sad to say that when he finally realised that it was a scam, he had a nervous breakdown and had to be sent into retirement. His health deteriorated pretty rapidly after that. I wish your grandmother all the best.

MissMarvel ah geek squad treated one of my family members terrible, despite the fact she buys stuff monthly from them like expensive stuff! She bought a fridge and the doors were weird they weren’t on right like broken, and the asked geek squad and they said “Don’t worry, wait three weeks and they should be back to normal” basically she got scammed of her return thingy and got stuck with a broken fridge lol. Of course your probably not like that I just hope that geek squad member earns his place down under, for tricking a old lady lol

I'm still thankful to Jim, way back in 2011 I was almost scammed out of 8000 USD. Apparently I was headhunted by a well off family in the UK as an aupair (I believed it cause they've claimed they were working with the legit company that I've registered with). After two weeks of talking with the "agency" and just about to have the money, I got an email from Jim telling me that he picked this up, oh how disappointed I was cos it was my life's dream at some point, but also amazed that someone would do something like that for a total stranger. You're still my hero up until today Jim 😶😶😶 ❤!!!

@@xavi47 The issue with that is that while many Indians (which is where the scam call centers are often located, there are other locations but a lot of them are somewhere in India) don't like what these scammers do and would love for their police to take action against them, the police often don't, oftentimes for monetary reasons. I have a friend from India who is a Brahman (I hope I spelled that correctly) priest. He has a high standard of morals and ethics and would admonish the actions of these scammers from his nation. Sometimes, these scammer organizations pay the police to turn a blind eye to their actions, but the sad truth about this whole scam industry there is that since India is a relatively poor nation, many people there are forced to take up this kind of work, or so it's been explained to me from other sources. If I'm wrong, please, I invite anyone to correct me; I only speak from what I've been told.
