Dude it is a gaming PC on a handheld. PC Gamers finally have the option to have a handheld version of their PC. Only difference? Think of it this way. You can play Kingdom hearts, a PS2 game on the SteamDeck natively at a higher resolution and framerate. The Switch needs to use the cloud for those games. I'm not suggesting you buy these on these platforms as they are severely overpriced, my point is that if a Switch cannot play a game from 2002 natively, it is a problem.

I have been thinking of getting into the PC gaming space for some time now. The Steam Deck seems like a tempting proposition and I have been thinking of getting but what do PC owners think? Is it better to build a PC with the similar specs to a PS5 and Xbox Series X or is it better to buy a Steam Deck?

I am excited about the Steam Deck (mine is Q2 currently, 512 GB model) and have been doing some prep for it (buying games I would like to play there, getting a 1 TB microSD card for extra storage, ripping my PS3 games to try to play at least some of them on the Deck) even though it will be a while before I can actually order mine. But I gotta admit that as a recovering Nintendo fanboy, this hurt (because it was pretty much all true). To be fair, Nintendo does repair joycons for free (including free shipping)--or at the very least they used to. Obviously it would still be better if they would just figure out how to prevent it from ever happening, but they are not the only ones with the drift problem. Thankfully Valve's is currently just a software issue rather than hardware. I will wholeheartedly agree about Xenoblade 2 being a really poorly optimized game in handheld mode, though I do not remember the frame rate getting much below 30fps. The visuals were atrocious in handheld mode, but I just had to learn to deal with it because of how much I liked the game otherwise. I am hoping that with Xenoblade 3 (since it is not using the Wii U engine this time) it will be better visually, but am not holding my breath on that front.

The fun fact is that the handheld pc concept has been around for more than 30 years with the pda, that has been refined and for 15 years devices like the aya neo, gpd win, the smach z and a loooong etc have been appearing. The switch did not innovate, it did not bring out brutal technology or put cutting-edge hardware on the table... we could attribute the merit of making the format mainstream to the switch, beyond that it did not invent anything new, it is a hardware that in 2017 was already almost obsolete, it is that the tegra X1 (SOC of the switch) was designed to get into mobile phones, not in a console XD. For example, a snapdragon 860 already exceeds the switch in terms of raw power, about 3-4 years ago the switch was compared against a mobile phone and the internet burned, but on paper it is the most realistic comparison. I love what they wanted to do with the switch, but it's still not the portable hardware that we really need, the closest thing we have now to the portable goal is the steam deck, for the price you can't find anything better, and With the new AMD apus, the safest thing is that handheld PCs begin to appear that surpass the deck and thus continue to revitalize the portable market, steam can get a new model, more competition can come out in the market and thus prevent them from turning crazy with prices like those of aya neo with aya neo next for example. But CURRENTLY, there is NOTHING that gives you more performance for money than the steam deck, and that's a fact. Handheld pc´s goes BRRRRR in maybe 1-2 years

Grew up loving Nintendo, but since the new Nintendo of Japan president took over and then hired Bowser from EA....their greed and anticonsumerism went off the charts. Their vision of pushing this company makes no sense except to make as much money as quickly as possible. Nothing wrong with a business making money, but they are treating their GAMING COMPANY like it is 1990. Their online services are AWFUL compared to their competitors and they treat the release of their retro libraries as if only holy deities should ever have them. Ugh.

I always love that the Switch uses the Tegra X1 SoC. It's the chip that Nvidia was offering smartphone and tablet companies in 2014 and no one wanted it because it wasn't as good as Exynos or Snapdragon of the day. So it wasn't good in 2014 and yet from 2017 onwards it's in the Switch. Even a bottom of the barrell smartphone chip today is faster than the Switch SoC.

It's stunning how Valve showed they can make a vastly superior product by simply being more pro consumer - no black magic or crazy incentives, just less greed. I despise handhelds however I will happily buy this just to play Nintendo games I enjoy and to spite Nintendo.

I would die for a switch if it had a mobile chipset that has the power of something like Apple’s M1. That would be amazing. But no, pay just as much for phone’s processor with 4 GB of ram as you would for an Xbox. My phone has more ram than a switch. Sad.

Just to clarify @OhNoItsAlexx Emulator on the Steam Deck (GNU/Linux) doesn't use proton to run the games; they are native apps built for Linux specifically: you name it YUZU, Ryujinx, RCPS3, etc.

I was a Nintendo fan from the start, at least in the US as Game & Watch are some of my favorite childhood memories. That being said, I started to smell and see the shit during the Wii era, and that was the beginning of the end for me. I skipped the Wii U and the Switch, as I was planning to buy a Lite at some point(never had a reason for TV play of the OG), but then the Steam Deck was announced, and well, I'm selling off the few titles I had bought for the Switch, and giving those funds to Valve. See, one company ask how can we gain or keep you as a customer(never had a Steam account until now), and the other ask how can we charge you for the same games again and again, and with lackluster performance to boot? Easy answer for me, as I can buy the Witcher 3 for $8 dollars today on the Steam(even though I don't have a deck yet), or pay $40-60 for the Switch version, which barely runs compared to running on the deck. Those arguments are a joke!

The simple fact is that Valve does, what Ninntendon't. I look forward to mods giving me extra levels, a community that will expand the software (which isn't locked down) beyond things I can imagine yet and the ability to, as an adult, play adult games, instead of getting censored games (not as bad as Sonny, but still, you're not getting true creative freedom on the major 3 consoles)). I had Switch (original) with CFW, but even then the community was small and everything was kinda shit. Considering that Valve doesn't actively try to block you from doing what you want with the device you paid for, is a pretty big indication that the community for the Steam Deck is going to outshine even the glorious days of the PSP way back.

Now that nintendo have competition hopefully they will get their shit together but i don't think they have noticed yet because of their arrogance

When the Steam Deck came out the only argument I heard from Switch fanboys was "it's better because it has an OLED screen and the Deck doesn't!" Somebody better do a welfare check on them now that the Steam Deck OLED is out.

The switch is one of my favourite consoles, its the only console I play now but its a under powered system that making some games unplayable. Games shouldn't be 30 fps and below in 2022. Having the steam deck is a great alterative most of the steam library in handheld running 60+, hell give it some time and people will put their emulators on the thing making it a more powerful switch.

Not only does the Steam Deck play PC games, it can emulate different systems and play their roms plus even run Windows as a portable computer on the go……. The Switch can’t even do those.

you know... one of those steam decks would probably be a good system for my parents. add some gambling games on there and they could play poker and such on the couch. Also its sad to see what Nintendo has become... I remember calling them up after my kid broke her first DS handheld and them sending me a brand new one through the mail at no cost to me when it was one month past the end of my warranty... they didn't have to do anything they CHOSE to keep my business. I appreciated it then but man did they change their tune quick when I called during issues with the wiiU when it was IN warranty. ever since then i haven't bought another system from them. My daughter is now an adult and bought her own switch for two games... other than that it sits and collects dust.

Nintendo and Nintendo related products (Pokémon, looking at you, you can’t find behind GameFreak here) get such a pass. Legends Arceus looks like a DS game and is so barren. It would get slaughtered if it was anything other than Pokémon. To be fair, Breath of the Wild and Odyssey were sensational so they get rightful praise. The actual switch though, where are themes???? What the hell is that subscription service? Multiplayer - never heard of her. I love my switch, but my god, Nintendo is so aggressively anti-consumer it leaves beyond a bitter taste in the mouth.

If valve made a suitable dock that actively cooled the steam deck, they could theoretically boost the tdp in docked mode. The limit is really how much power it can draw, limited to 15w. The other devices on the market can only keep up by having 25-35w tdp. Valve is obviously also able to subsidise the console cost by banking on store sales, which is where they make their money. A couple of years from now will be rather interesting to see what moves valve make next. They already make vr devices, so not inconceivable thry could join the two somewhere in the future.

Somewhere in another universe Nintendo has made the move to the PC scene, making custom PC hardware that you can put into your own build that can run all of their current and past consoles and working with Emulatior devs to perfect the performance at higher resolutions and quality presets, or that running their own storefront like ValvE allowing purchase of all their titles and running them all through a launcher client Or even their own Operating system NintendOS similar to SteamOS

I know this will be controversial even among Alex's fans. I wanted the Switch to fail so Nintendo would become a third party dev and just makes games for PC.

you know what the steam deck have that the switch don't have ???? THE ABILITY TO CHANGE THUMBSTICK EASILY IF IT HAS DRIFT . +the other other many nuances and features that normal pc has . Even if Valve stopped supporting the Deck (what is valve known to do to their hardware) you still have the ability to modify and change it components . and your games that tied to your steam account can be played on your pc regardless if you bought them via the deck or their site on pc . what nintendo do again ? . right . they make you pay for online and force you to buy their games again . then take your ability to buy or own them legitimately .

So I'm 19 years old, finished High School, and live with my parents. I don't have a lot of money, and I'm currently unemployed. I Hate Nintendo as a company but love some of their games. I own a Switch lite and a regular Switch. I'm happy you guys finally get a handheld console that doesn't suck, and My mom would kill me if she knew I wanted to buy this thing and get rid of my Switch's. I don't mind the Switch as a hardware, don't really care for the online since I play single player games, and as a new generation I'm not one for old games. I have two $25 gift cards and want to buy the new Kirby and the Forgotten Land since it looks fun, It'll also be my last game that I buy from Nintendo that's $60. I don't see myself as a Nintendo fanboy but as a fan of their games. All that I have mentioned above, am I a bad person for still having a Switch? 🥺
