I'm just so glad that Valve included a desktop GUI so we can download other software that's not just steam games onto the steam deck. I was considering loading windows in order to use the dolphin emulator but I can just install that via the included KDE Plasma GUI.

retroarch is on steam, for free, under their store for applications, which is different from their games store. so you could have always used retroarch to play snes and gba games, but it won't come with the 'cores', you have to add those as free 'dlc' through steams' DLC interface.
@ForgotMyPasswd000
@ForgotMyPasswd000 2 жыл бұрын
@@lonergothonline retro arch is more suited towards simpler consoles where you don’t want/need a lot of features, many cores are missing features found in the standalone emulators settings and the menus are clunky.

@ForgotMyPasswd000
@ForgotMyPasswd000 2 жыл бұрын
@@tejasdhaliwal8362 PS4 barely has a functioning emulator since it’s very early in development, RPCS3 the PS3 emulator is very CPU heavy because of how complicated it is to emulate the PS3 CPU, and PS2 will be fine. You can’t just emulate every and any console you want instantly, to make an emulator you need to have a deep understanding of the hardware you’re emulating meaning you need to reverse engineer a console since not a lot of documentation won’t be out there, you need to know how games address memory, the CPU, the GPU. You need to account for how different architectures work etc etc. You then also need to know how to code in a low level language which is already hard enough and then you need to figure out how to emulate how your target hardware work to have games run, and have this done at the same FPS and resolution of that hardware. All whilst fixing the laundry list of bugs that happen on your emulator and not on real hardware. It takes years to develop emulators for this reason. I’m just pointing this out since you asked about PS4 which currently Spine the PS4 emulator only boots into a few games with graphical glitches like all the 3D models in Persona being only wireframes and Sonic Mania having an inverted colour palette. It’s gonna be a few years before the emulator gets acceptable compatibility let alone being able to run on much weaker hardware.

Just in the first few minutes, having the b-roll shots actually show you playing various PC games has sold me on Steam Deck more than most other reviews so far. It's like, "oh yeah, that game works on the deck!" multiple times in a row.

That was such an in-depth review - thank you for that! Lots of great points. I'm a big Switch user and I had to start using the Hori Split Pad which kind of looks like the Steam Deck profile. I'm in the latter part of the preorders sadly, but looking forward to this.

@Our Myth Their Lies I don’t really see @Matthew Wolfe coming off as trying to sell something, but I do agree with the larger controllers for switch is the only way I can really spend any extended play session with the switch without cramped hands. But if you don’t like Hori Split Pads, the Binbok joycons are the ones I’d recommend after trying a few out as I also needed wireless functionality.

Now i'm smacking my head against the wall with dying hardware and no way to replace parts without getting scammed and paying 2x the msrp. honestly the fact that the steamdeck made Apex reconsider their stance on linux has given me huge expectations, I don't even play Apex but that game alone has the influence to sway more games to allow proton anticheat compatability. On the others side Destiny doubled down banning anyone who even attempts running it which really? Bungi has the right but damn thats a bit extreme imo.

I am so so excited for my Deck! I work on the Railroad and sometimes just Hours waiting around when the Track is closed or something like that, sitting in Hotels and being bored as hell. I always considered buying a Switch but honestly dont like the Games there that much. I have like 400 Steam Games, so this will be PERFECT if only a quarter of them run on the Deck! So so excited! And what comes after steam deck, this might just be a beginning for some very cool new Handhelds, as powerful technology finally is ready for being well... handheld. :) Love it!

1:04:40 I completely disagree with you on your remarks about pricing, the 399$ price was essential and made the Deck as popular and hyped as it is, I am convinced that would not have happened with a higher price. Valves VR lost against Facebooks VR because of the price and nothing else. I'm sure that the enthusiasts would have paid a higher price ..and they did, but the 399$ model is the thing that brings the broader market appeal.

@@njdotson Again I disagree, even though Valve said that they didn't expect to sell so many 512GB models, I think a big chunk of those people got upsold on the additional features but would have never considered the Deck in the first place or even heard of it, if it wasn't for the 399$ entry model.

While I actually agree in this case, I don't think the Index is the same story at all. Gaben said multiple times that the Index was NOT meant to be broadly adopted. It was expensive on purpose in order to gather information from high-end users/first adopters of the tech. He said something along the lines of it needs to be expensive to be good before it can be cheap and widely used. He doesn't think VR is at the point in it's development cycle to be something everyone would use so they focused their efforts on the high end in order to learn what WOULD make it ready. They were not competing against Facebook and the Index was wildly successful at what it was trying to do. The reviews of Alyx on the Index is what Valve was going for.
@TackerTacker
@TackerTacker 2 жыл бұрын
@@FTGTapGod Absolutely true. But that underlines the fact that price = accessibility/broad market appeal/popularity, which Norman says would have been just as high with a much higher starting price, which is the only point I disagree with.

There’s the Heroic Games Launcher: it has a native, better performing UI than the standard Epic Games Launcher and it can use steams proton to launch epic games games (and there’s beta support for gog games)

Beautiful machine honestly. Super awesome having Linux and the KDE environment ready to roll too. It's because of devices like this that gets developers improving Linux in general for the masses. Could easily see myself throwing this in my bag with a portable LED monitor and a keyboard. Love this market of handhelds.

Very well thought out and in-depth review! thank you for the effort. I have one question regarding the Suspend feature that I think is very important and should have been covered (I apologize if I missed it): How does the Steam Deck behave with suspension and going from the Deck to the PC to play the same game and vice-versa? I think I read that they were trying to implement a "smart save" feature that saved your progress in the cloud even with a suspend, so you could pick up the game from where you left off on the Deck, right after a suspension. Is this correct? Thank you!

The fact that this can be compared to gaming PCs that double its cost makes it pretty awesome and a considerable option to play some games for people like me that don't want to spend too much money on a PC gaming setup because we're more of casual gamers, in my case because I have a Mac that fits very well for my work but I cannot play games on it. But still, sometimes I want to play something! Maybe this is my opportunity. Thank you for the video.

1:00:58 If you're on a plane, usually you have charging options nowadays, If you're on a long train ride, same. If you're on a long bus ride, probably some power banks could be an answer, I take it you can just plug a powerbank into the usb-c. And most cars will also be able to provide power.. but I don't know how easily you get motion sick. Great review!

Happy for PC gamers interested to have an on-the-go option. I'll be sticking with the Switch - only have the time and money for one gaming hardware - but happy for the people who are excited for this.

If I had a Switch I wouldn't consider it. But I don't. Wasn't interested in the library at all (well, maybe I'd play BoTW, but buy it for one launch title?). As a PC gamer with a long list of uplayed/older titles in Steam - a great deal. Even if only 80 of my games are currently verified - that's 80 games I get with a console launch. Cool. Usually there's 0 - 2 :)

I hope it gets anti-cheat support for a lot of games. And do you think the gyro controls would still keep aim assist? I know in most games when it notices a mouse input it switches to kbm and switches off aim assist.
@JurisLLM

I don't remember the timestamp, but you could set the gyro mode to either emulate a mouse input or joystick input. So if a game doesn't properly support dual-type inputs , that could be a solution.

It might take a little while but I think a lot of games and game companies are going to adapt to the steam deck and in a few years it's going to be a powerhouse with everything that it supports.
@KillahMate
@KillahMate 2 жыл бұрын
@@JurisLLM Worth noting that if it's possible to use gyro as a mouse input it's almost invariably the superior solution, because gyro can then map directly to onscreen motion which is what you want with absolute-type controls like gyro and mouse. Gyro-joystick involves translating to joystick inputs and back and it's _very_ hard to make feel good.
@SolarLight
@SolarLight 2 жыл бұрын
You do not need aim assist with gyro. It behaves like a mouse. It should just be a mouse. Fun fact, Epic Games were considering adding aim assist to Fortnite's gyro aiming, but they found it to be overpowered. Because, well, it's like giving a mouse aim assist.

If you set the gyro to work as a mouse, no. If you set the gyro to work as mouse-like-joystick (recommended) or any other joystick type, it will keep aim assist.

Can you hot swap the micro SD cards? I hadn't thought of grabbing multiple (I still don't know if I'd bother; I have a 400 GB one with the 512 GB model reserved, so that should be enough to store as much as I want to play at any one time), but it's got me thinking about it after you mentioned it.
