One year ago, Luke made the Steam Deck his whole personality. 12 Months later, Ellen's calendar reminder is here to ask: is Luke still playing it, and was it worth it?

So absolutely true as well. I’ve got a Steam Deck myself, and while it is great when I’m traveling, when I’m at home I’ve got other things to use so it sits on the sidelines…

@@WhiteLamaHow does it feel to hold/play? My biggest worry ever since I first saw the design is that unlike a Switch or something like a 360 controller, which have the analogue sticks, D-pad, and buttons going vertical the Steam Deck's controls are horizontal, so rather than just moving your fingers up and down you have to stretch your fingers over. That makes it seem like it would be uncomfortable to use, especially if you have smaller fingers.
@WhiteLama

@@kyuubinaruto17, it feels fine for me (quite big hands though). But I do mostly play games that doesn’t require a lot of quick accurate movement, but since the track pads work like a track pad on a laptop I’m quite used to it.
@BioRanger
@BioRanger 3 ай бұрын
@@kyuubinaruto17 The Deck layout is much more comfortable than the Switch layout. Every input is located in the natural range of your thumb's movement, and you don't need to shift your hand up and down to access different inputs. The fact that other handheld gaming PCs stick to the Switch layout (which was born out of neccessity, as the joycons needed to work both vertically and horizontally), rather than the Deck layout, is very sad.

As someone who spends a lot of time in and out of hospital (where the WiFi is terrible), I will say that having a Steam Deck has done a really good job of widening the library of games I can play while I’m there.

This is really what I was looking for. I spend a lot of time in hospital with my daughter, and the Switch has saved my sanity. At home, it’s still just more accessible than the pc though cos I’m with her in her room a lot. I have so many Steam games and no time to actually sit at the pc for hours, so wondered if the Steam Deck was worth buying. This is helpful, thank you

@@uniquely_mo get yourself a good sized SD card and pre-download your games. If your hospital is like mine and eleanorsmith's, the wifi is weeeeaaaak, and while you can play games from your PC streaming to your steam deck over Wi-Fi in different locations, if the wifi is crunchy then it really impacts what you can play. That said, I played red dead redemption 2 on my steam deck last time I was in hospital. It's a powerful lil machine.

Nevermind that I can also play the same games on my PC. Makes hanging around waiting rooms in hospitals or waiting for trains ( nevermind on the train ) much more comfy. The one downside to my Steam Deck, and the reason I don't generally take it on my commute, is that (a) my commute is only 20 minutes by train so it's hard to really get a session going, and (b) my old-man eyes and a 7-inch screen don't really mix without a dark room and some reading glasses, like the setup I have on my nightstand next to my bed that is the Deck's "home".

Each of us might have a different use case. I travel and spend some time away from home. I thought of buying a gaming laptop (my current one is old) but than I realize while Steam Deck is not a replacement for a laptop it might suit my needs (pack the deck, dock, mouse, keyboard. I already have additional screen) so I also use it as Linux PC and it works well. Ferry travel nice to have it with me, shorter evening session in bed with some cozy (or similar games) perfect especially that levels might be quite short, my backlog - brilliant many things works on deck. In PC mode I have (for most games I tried) no issues with other launchers or drm free games I just copied to the device adding them to Steam lib is also not very complicated. For what I do on this device I would say totally worth it. On the other hand, ask me in 10 months when it will be a year. Currently playing Batman Origins works great and I have fun. Have a nice time gaming! (regardless of your preferred platform)

Nearly a year on, my Steam Deck hasn't got much play, but for the specific niche occasions I use it, it's been a godsend. I have a heart condition that occasionally confines me to bed for a sick day-it's bad enough that I can't even get up and go over to my gaming desktop. The first point is actually really good and interesting. The whole appeal with these modern handhelds is that they can play "real" AAA games, but back in the age of seperate portable console lines, the games released on them were made with that specific use case in mind, i.e. just playing for a short while on the bus on the way to work/school and getting to have a good experience in that timeframe. And, really, Switch games are still designed like that to an extent, at least the First-Party stuff. For example, you can jump into Mario Odyssey, get a couple of moons, and have a satisyfying experience doing that and easily pick up where you left off later. Same with e.g. BotW and Shrines or Koroks. Whereas grand, cinematic experiences like, Idk, Last of Us or God of War work much better when playing for longer stretches of time, and, preferably, on a larger screen, precisely because they were never made with the handheld experience in mind.

Very similar to the Dreamcast in a way - revolutionary and ahead of its time, but plagued with issues.

Yes but we are cherry picking an argument here. You point out God of War, or The Last of Us, which are specific cases also for the PC Gaming. Not all the games released for PC are intended for long gaming sessions, and I can confirm that there are plenty of games on PC suitable for a portable experience. My case is that if it works alright on the Steam Deck, my PC is shut down.

OX continuing to do important video games journalism /SRS It’s fun to tease Luke and all, but knowing how a serious video game investment- like a console- stacks up a year later IS important. I'd disagree, that video is full of bias towards other systems and the recommendation to get a switch instead has to be a joke.
@daggern15
@daggern15 3 ай бұрын
@@vargsieber The beauty of reviews are they're always going to be people stating their opinions. I personally hated the Switch but I can at least see why so many people like it. Nintendo's heavy-handed anti-consumerism aside, it's a console at it's core, meaning you turn it on and play. If you're into Nintendo exclusives, it's the best way to play them while the Steam Deck is a computer and thus comes with the niggles that give console players chills down their spines. The harsh but simple truth is that handheld gaming is a niche. I already found the Switch to be unwieldly so I daren't imagine how the Steam Deck feels. The win I'd give it is it would be less likely to cause the hand cramps the Switch did for me but it's a bit of a chongus, especially when compared to the size and weight of the controllers people are used to playing with. And sorry but as for the topic of biases, you realise you're on a sister channel of a company that takes the X in their name from Xbox while Luke said multiple times that he'd play something on his PS5 or his PC then both of them recommended the Switch, right? It doesn't really get less biased than that and he was very clear that it simply didn't work for his standard use cases while it might for others. It'd be terribly two-faced of him to admit the experience hadn't worked out for him only to still actively recommend anyone watching should go out and buy one anyway.

A lot of these don't apply to most people (as Luke rightly pointed out). For instance, I don't own a switch, PS5, Xbox version whatever and a PC. Before I got my deck, I had an okay gaming PC and my laptop. From that perspective, I think the deck made more sense than any of the other devices because (1) I have ~100 games on steam that I don't want to repurchase and (2) if I can only afford one, I might as well just pick the device that has largest library since I'm going to miss out on some exclusives no matter what I choose. I think being a games journalist puts you in a great position in terms of having access to 5-6 different gaming devices and either having keys or having to buy games on these devices anyway for work. (EDIT: Perhaps the issue of how many devices/games a typical gamer has easy access to is something Luke and Ellen didn't really think about. I've been guilty of doing similar in my profession as well). So in your shoes, I'd absolutely prefer to play Sekiro on a PS5. But if I don't have that luxury, I'd much prefer paying $400 for a Steam Deck and playing Sekiro immediately vs a similar amount for another console plus $60 for a new copy of Sekiro. I personally game all the time on my steam deck. Not so much on the go because my 'travel' game of choice is crusader kings 2, which my laptop plays just fine. I actually have my deck hooked up to my TV and use it as a very convenient gaming console.

Luke, dunno if you'll see this, but to solve the input delay, in the ... right menu, in the like, performance settings tab, change the framerate limit to "off" (and if the game needs it, use it's in-game cap), and select "allow tearing" - they have nearly no downsides if the game already caps at 60, and completely eliminate the input latency

Got my Steam deck around the same time as Luke. Honestly, it's become my main game console. I own the switch, ps5, etc, but I just tend to play the steam deck more as that means I don't have to fight over the TV. Also, most of my friends play steam solely, so I have got to get into a lot of multiplayer games like most recently deep rock galactic. I am a little concerned that some games don't play well (grpahically) on it. As haven't had that issue yet with anything I've tried. Might have to put off Baldurs gate 3 a couple more years if that's the case.

I think Luke's biggest problem is that he only sees it as a portable gaming device since he also has a PC and a PS5 (and a Switch). If you can only afford to buy one console, to me, Steamdeck is it if you also commute a lot. Buy a dock and a monitor/tv, and you can use it as a home console too, replacing PS/XBox/PC.

He also completely ignored the emulation aspect of it, and it's quite possibly the best portable emulation device out there (as far as number of platforms it can handle). Hook up RetroAchievements to it (super easy) and you're earning achievements on tons of older games that never had them. Also I'd play Switch more (but not more than Steam Deck) if I had better luck with it. My JoyCons (I've bought several) always end up with drift, there's multiple parts I have to hunt down if I want to play it at all (since I need a pro controller to not have drift, which means I'm better off putting it in the dock) and just recently I had problems even getting it to charge when I bought and wanted to play Mario vs Donkey Kong. Might have to get it repaired :/.

My friend went through the same situation when he picked up a ROG Ally not to long ago and he had allot of time left before the return policy was done. He thought he wanted one for easy portable PC gaming on the go but nearing the end he wasn't sure. When he asked me about it I asked him, 'Are you ONLY playing your Steam Library?' and 'Are you going to do anything beyond gaming with it as well?' When I got my Steam Deck I wanted it for two things, emulation gaming to finally sit down somewhere and play some older games i never played before and to also use it as a portable drawing tablet for my pixel art. I wanted to use it for more then just gaming and since I didn't have a laptop this was perfect for me, where my friend had a laptop, a main gaming pc and a Xbox Series X he didn't really need it. So for anyone getting a Steam Deck in the future think of what you want to do with it. If there isn't at least 5 games or programs you want to use with it then question if its worth it for you?

It still never ceases to amaze me that even now, many of the latest AAA games are enjoyable on the device. I do agree though that some games really ought to be experienced on a proper gaming system with a nice big monitor, but, according to the latest Steam 'Year in Review', the Deck has successfully pulled me away from my main gaming rig for 50% of my gaming sessions!

I got mine about a year ago too and still am using it regularly and loving it. I mostly use it for emulation and for older PC games, and its just nicer being able to lie in bed and play games, I prefer the comfort of it that way. It's definitely not an ideal, like, travelling handheld because of its size and weight (I find even the Switch to be annoyingly bulky for trips though and usually just take my 3DS), but as an emulation device that plays practically every console under the sun that I can enjoy while lying in bed, its perfect. The other use case for it, I would say, is if youre not a PC gamer at all. As an entry level device into the world of PC gaming, youre not going to get anything even close to the Deck at a comparable price point and it can open up a whole new world of games to you that you might otherwise have never even considered because they were PC-only and you don't want to spend £1k+ on getting a whole proper PC rig setup. The Deck is in that perfect price point where its the same price as a console but runs like a mid-range PC that would cost twice as much.

It is weird to hear the Switch ergonomics praised. It is *so* small, it is hand cramp city for me. For me, the big plus to the steamdeck is that it is also an on the go desktop which is much smaller than a laptop. But, I'm also guessing there is a non-zero chance that Luke, like most people, has never opened a cli in his life. 2/3rds of my time on deck is desktop mode. It's using a full fat browser, having Spotify in the background, doing light cli work. On the other hand, the only reason I don't regret buying my switch was because I bought it off a friend who was going to get rid of it because it didn't work, and I fixed it. They slowed way down in 2020, for some peculiar reason. But even after the pandemic, I just play on the major platforms (PC, PS5, Series X). I didn't even pick up TOTK because I haven't even finished BoTW. I mainly bought the Switch for Mario Kart with friends and Animal Crossing during lock down. It paid for itself in this regard, but beyond that, it's been sitting in it's case for almost two years.

I chuckled a little when this came on because I was playing my steamdeck at the time. I definitely get why it didn't stick for Luke but it's working well for me. IMHO the sweet spot is as a second screen to play on the couch while watching KZfaq -- not too far from a charger for when it runs out of batteries, and not usually games that take too much concentration -- my top steam deck game by FAR last year was Powerwash Simulator . I don't have a gaming PC and I did get through act 2 of Balder's Gate on the deck, but as soon as it came out on PS5 I never came back. (Three cheers to Larian's cross saves for letting me move my steamdeck save to PS5) I do think Luke's review last year helped me make an informed decision to buy the steam deck -- he was a lot more honest about the flaws than most of the rave reviews I'd seen before it and so I went in with eyes open

I actually still think the Steam Deck is a great idea. The biggest problem I see with it is not really a problem and more a fact of life. We're adults now. We don't look at time and free time the same. In fact, as a kid, it's just... Time. As an adult, you specifically have "Free time" that you slot in your favorite hobbies. As a child, you can pick this up and play whenever and usually in multiple smaller session bursts between going somewhere, a car ride, waiting at a doctor's office, while waiting for your own turn on the computer or console because a sibling is on it... I'm not saying the Steam Deck is for children, but that handhelds by design will default to a child-like lifestyle. Abundant time to do as you want without having to actively spend brain power on work, chores, bills, and other various responsibilities. It just doesn't slot into an adult lifestyle easily. Still a great product though!

I think you'd only buy a Switch today if you wanted to play the exclusives since everything else is on PC running better and available for a lower price. I don't have game journalist money and the ability to write purchases off as expenses, so having access to all the sales that PC games get, in addition to PC games generally being cheaper than console games, really makes it the more affordable option, while also running better since the Switch is getting old now (hoping the Switch 2 is at least on par with the Steam Deck).

However, I do still pull it out for when I want to lie in bed and play a game occassionally (usually One Finger Death Punch here recently) and I used it while waiting on a relative at a doctor's appointment (I was their ride to and from). So I still get use out of mine and I love my little deck. My poor switch hasn't gotten a lot of use though, need to pull it out and get some game time in. Also it took me way to long to actually go through the trouble of putting minecraft on it, not that I play much minecraft anyways but still

As someone that travels a lot for work... I appreciate what the Steam Deck tries to be. I also think it isn't all that successful. I've said the same things about most of Valve's hardware though, I just really hoped this time would be different. The hardware is decent but there isn't enough battery power behind it to make it portable. I was lucky to get 90 minutes of use out of it before having to power it off, even with stuff like a traveling power bank or external supply, it made the whole thing cumbersome and a laptop would have been easier to carry around. Then when you look at it like it's a mini PC that you dock to a TV, it still isn't really worth the price. You can spend the same amount and put together a mid-tier computer with better specs, regardless of which version of the Steam Deck you buy. Mine has been gathering dust too.... and it probably will continue to do so.

I'm still using mine, but mostly because my PC rig was very old and the deck pretty much replaced it! I use it mostly in desktop mode but the freedom to play indy games in other rooms is great. Because it's basically a PC you can just install pretty any game as long as it doesn't have any draconian malware like DRM.

I got my steam deck for Christmas, so it still remains to be seen if I'll be playing it in a year, but its already changed my gaming life. I never felt like sitting at my computer after a day of work, so my gaming fell to the wayside. Now I can sit on my couch and in my bed and play games for a few hours at night. I'm loving it. Right now im playing horizon zero dawn, and it did take a minute to get used to playing a big AAA game on a handheld, but once you get used to it, it's not bad at all. Maybe I should set a reminder on my phone for a year from now to see if im still playing it, but I think it's much more likely a year goes by where I haven't played a game on my actual gaming PC lmao

"You have to go somewhere" That is why I didn't get one. I usually carry a laptop that has the same gaming capacities (with some tuning...). I will say I loved what it is as console and what it's done for mobile gaming.

We are well-conditioned to sit in our Gamer Chairs at our Computer Desks to play on our Gaming PCs. Steam Deck is by all means a quality of life improvement, giving us Handheld Options, bit we really don't think about Handheld Convenience/Novelty when anticipating playing these games.

American Truck Simulator (and Euro Truck Simulator 2) have Steam Deck controller layouts. They're both "green dot" games. I tried playing ATS on my Deck and...yeah, no. I need all the keys for that to be on an actual keyboard, thanks. And mouselook is so superior to right-stick camera movement that I ended up making myself motion sick trying to look around. But when I dropped my trailer when pulling out of a weigh station and zoomed 50 miles down I-5 without realizing it, that was when I said (out loud, to the cat!) "excuse me, I need to go over to the PC and finish this drive the right way."

My biggest issue with the Steam Deck - and is the reason I stopped using it - was the battery. Every time I came to turn it on the battery was dead and it would take ages for it to charge up, by which time I had turned on my PC and started playing something on there.

I’ve held off on buying the Steamdeck as I didn’t have the money for it and to see if newer versions would be released. During that time, there’s been some other companies that have come out with their own handheld or are planning to release one soon. I’ve started looking at those over the Steamdeck.

0:00 Wow! Funnily enough, I got here from watching Max Miller's "Drinking History" video about hot chocolate - so when I heard the same sound sample that he uses for his animated opening, I was thrown for a loop! I thought youtube player was glitching with a wrong audio track!

I'm about the same age as you guys and I think the allure of the steam deck comes from our obsession we had with gameboys as kids. The problem with that is I was pretty much playing my gameboy nonstop the only reason the portability was great was that when my mom dragged me to the store I didn't have to stop. Now we're the ones going to the store, to the bank, and countless other errands and well, we can't play because we aren't tagalongs anymore...man I miss being a tagalong.

Definitely interesting to hear your thoughts on it I personally love it because I'm someone who sits weirdly when gaming, and when using a traditional PC set up, it's difficult for me to sit comfortably. In fact one of the reasons I liked my Switch was I could curl up in weird positions to play handheld mode, and even with my gaming PC being a laptop, it's genuinely easier for me to play comfortably with the SteamDeck I'm also not a PlayStation person, and I joke I can get most games either for PC or Switch because Microsoft and Sony tend to release their games for PC, even if you have to wait a bit I definitely see why some people wouldn't be as big a fan of it, but as a Nintendo fan just needing something more powerful to branch out with, I love it

I will say I love my Deck. I got my LCD version used for an emulation system while I got the OLED version for my mid level and Indy games. I even got the Real Air Pro AR glasses to make the experience more immersed. I will say it does help with being on the go so much. That and the huge library I own makes it possible. I have been using mine constantly. That combined with my Lenovo Legion Go, I have everything at my disposal.

So I feel like it also depends on your personal circumstances and such. I work 2 weeks away from home on a 3 week rotation and the steam deck allows me to play a lot of games I can’t on those 2 weeks. So while it may be a bit bunk for some who have access to a pc or console constantly, for those of us like myself who can’t, it’s still pretty perfect 🎉

Very informative, this could really help some people figure out why it might not be the best choice for them! I think for most people it makes sense to either buy a Switch OR the Deck, but not both, since they have so much overlap. I decided against the Switch and for the Deck because it's got a bigger screen, I don't have to repurchase games and I have way more choice among all the Steam games. One big thing is the adjustability, I love playing modded Stardew Valley and the Switch simply doesn't allow for that. I get so, so much more value out of SV with mods (over 1000h playtime overall), that said modding on the Deck was almost too hard for me as not extremely PC savvy person so I don't know how many people would try it. A lot of games don't play super well (or not at all) with controllers, so that's a big hurdle to consider. As others have said, I play mostly indie games and stuff that's relaxed, not graphically intensive, and for that it's really nice to sit on the sofa and chill. I'm disabled and sitting at a desk is not usually feasible, so having a handheld device is much more comfortable. Nice to hang out with my partner too, instead of being in separate rooms in the evening.

Can totally relate. Ive been saving some jrpg (p5r, octopath travellers, etc) to play on my steam deck when im travelling or staying at relative's. But i haven't done travelling much since i got my steam deck. Now i want the new oled version so i can enjoy the games better when im somewhere away from my pc.
