A quick tutorial on steam rockets, well I tried but somehow managed to make it 20 minutes long. I try and cover using both regolith and an aquatuner to make steam. But the most important bit is the preparation to move away from steam. If you build your first steam rocket the right size and in the right way the migration to petroleum is painless and natural. Also the acquisition of the necessary research in the right order can make your life easier.

Just a tip about the steam pipes for whoever's watching now: The reason the steam cools down in the insulated pipes is because the insulated pipes are cold and take a long time to warm up and reach the steam. No heat is actually lost to space. To solve this, use regular non-insulated granite pipes and keep the steam box close to the engine. This will let you leave the pipes full of steam without a worry (A bit of cold damage will occur as the pipes warm up though. This is normal.)

Quick tip for gases in pipes in space: Don't bother using insulated pipes unless you're running them through something solid. Instead, just use regular Obsidian pipes. Their heat capacity is so tiny that they very quickly increase in temperature until they perfectly match the temperature of the steam (or whatever gas), and with no atmosphere to leak the temperature into they will remain that way permanently. This isn't such a big deal if you're quick about your first few launches with steam, but if you're putting half a dozen cycles between launches, even Ceramic insulated pipes will slowly leak the temperature from your steam into the pipes and crack them. It takes regular obsidian pipes mere seconds to catch up to the temperature of the gas and no matter how long steam sits idle in the pipes, it will retain that temperature permanently.

Cool tutorial, many thanks! An alternative way to make steam is to tap into a robominer petroleum cooling loop (linked to a steam turbine) - the petroleum will always be at least 125 degrees.

I prefer to use ice tempshift plates instead of bottle emptiers. - They get built fairly fast - They are exactly 400 kgs of water so easy to calculate how many you need - 3 is perfect for the standard liquid lock. 1200 kgs - It will keep your aquatuner cool a little longer before you get heat

Big fan of the channel! One interesting thing I noticed while building an aquatuner steam room: I built a steam pipe return (which didn't work since steam quickly pressurizes past what a high pressure vent can handle) but the steam trapped in my return pipe stayed at a proper temperature versus my insulated ceramic pipe. The regular pipe quickly exchanges heat with the steam but then stabilizes. The insulated pipes will keep exchanging heat with the contents. You can just build a regular pipe to the steam rocket, pipe it in at 130 degrees and not have to worry about deconstructing it between the two rocket trips!
@isawadelapradera6490

drip some crude oil on the floor, and place your vent directly on the puddle. that tile will be at the pressure of the mass of the puddle (perfectly something like 370 GRAMS), letting it vent regardless of pressure. You can use that technique to build permanent storage for excess gasses, too. I have accumulated like 1000 tons of oxygen in a 3x2 tile box just in case my oxygen supply is ever compromised. Beware temperature ranges of your stored gas through. If your overpressurized steam condenses, the highly pressurized fluid can and will burst your storage/turbine chamber.

You don't even need the conveyor system. Just put a storage bin in the room and load it up with hot regolith. Then dump it out on the floor. Don't need a water pipe either: Just put some ice in the bin and dump it out, and it will melt and turn into steam.

I just used a steel door hooked up to a series of steel blocked dipped into some magma to make my first steam for the rocket. Also didn't use any power, and the steam was a nice hot 140 degrees. Granted I was lucky there was a volcano up there, practically on the surface.
@FrancisJohnYT

I suggest using a rail temperature sensor and dropping the regolith down to your core base when it's cool enough, keeps dupes from dragging in 350c regolith as filtration and gives you a bit of power to boot. just need to pump in a bit more water than the two rockets need so the steambox stays relatively stable in temperature as you get regolith surges every time a shower ends.

Front-loading your steam chamber with water is not a good idea. You slow down the whole process significantly by doing that. The issue is that loading steam is slow. It's 1kg at a time, so 900kg takes 1.5 cycles. Instead of waiting for 2 tons of water to reach 110-120 C, you could make 20-30kg of steam, which is much, much faster. As you pump the steam into the rocket 1kg at a time, you can drip more water into the steam chamber via pipes, making new steam as fast as you pump it out. This requires piping water to the steam chamber, but it's still a lot faster than having to heat up all the water before you can start pumping steam. If you're going with hot rocks, It's a lot faster to build your steam chamber in a spot that had a lot of hot regolith or mafic rock. Dig it out, your steam chamber starts with a couple of tons of hot rock right away, no need to haul it there or use a conveyor belt.

One question...any reason you choose the Hydro Sensors instead of the Signal Switch? There isn't a cost difference, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if this is just a case of Signal Switch being newer, and you're using something familiar? Thanks again!
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
This was made before the automation update added the Signal Switch. Wait not quite accurate, switches existed but they required dupe interaction so you would flip the switch but until a dupe showed up and action-ed it nothing happened. Hydro sensors were instant and made a good alternative. I should have watched this before I did my current steam rockets, I would have remembered to build them with 7 research modules for the petroleum change over.

i built a steam generator recently, but didn't build any conveyors, or anything other than 5 storage containers in a room with a metal floor and bunker tiles. my reasoning is that the environment is naturally super hot. i have never had any troubles with it. i only pipe in about 200 kg of water in at a time instead of the full 1000kg or so. the metal tiles and bunker tiles are always between 176 C /350 F and 204 C/ 400 F. i have made more than 10 launches from it. i added a booster to it. can you do a video on solid boosters?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
Solid boosters already require Oxylite, I find it better to go straight to Petroleum. Boosters are sort of an emergency measure if you mess up your research and get the wrong stuff. Your best bet it to create some sample rockets in the rocket calculator and see how effective they are.

I would make an argument that your "powerless" method uses more power then with "aquatuner", since you need to run Conveyor Loader (and Auto-Sweeper, if you don't want to waste your dups time) for ages, which will use more power then these 40 sec of using Aquatuner.... I still don't understand the gantry. Mine always broke, so I tried jet suits instead, and now one of my rockets is stuck and no one will get in it. You said to put the gantry back one space? But then you tore it down anyways? Also what's with the "disembark" message, do my astronauts need to get out between missions or not?
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
If you have assigned a dupe and they will not get in make sure they have tinkering as the highest priority, if that fails reload the game. I used to keep the gantry's in the past but dealing with the 1.2kw power draw was just an annoyance. The disembark message pops up but it does not do anything, if you provide a gantry the dupe will pop out and use all the facilities. But if you never provide them with an exit they will happily stay in there forever and ever and ever.
