A steam shovel is a powerful excavating machine that uses steam power to lift and move material such as rock and soil. It is considered the earliest type of power shovel or excavator and played a significant role in public works in the 19th and early 20th century.
The steam shovel was invented in the mid-1800s and quickly gained popularity due to its efficiency and power. By the 1870s, steam shovels were commonly used in railroad construction, helping to excavate tunnels, cut through mountains, and lay track. They were also used extensively in the construction of canals, such as the Panama Canal, where they played a crucial role in digging the massive trenches necessary for the project.
Steam shovels were massive machines, often weighing several tons and measuring up to 100 feet in length. They were powered by large, coal-fired boilers that generated steam to power the shovel's hydraulic system. The shovel arm was operated by a crew of skilled workers who used levers and gears to control its movements.
Despite their efficiency and power, steam shovels were not without their drawbacks. They were expensive to operate and required a large crew of workers to maintain and operate. Additionally, they were slow to start up and required a significant amount of time to build up enough steam to operate at full capacity.
In the 1930s, simpler and cheaper diesel-powered shovels began to emerge, causing the steam shovel to fall out of favor. Diesel-powered shovels were more efficient, faster, and easier to operate than their steam-powered counterparts, and they quickly became the preferred choice for excavating and construction projects.
Today, steam shovels are a rare sight, with only a few examples preserved in museums and private collections around the world. However, their legacy lives on, and they remain an important part of the history of construction and engineering. The steam shovel paved the way for modern excavating machines and played a crucial role in the development of infrastructure that we rely on today.

As a child, I could watch heavy equipment work for hours and hours. I'm 73 now, just got a compact backhoe... Finally, I'm an operator... I couldn't be happier...

There was a very rare 1901 Thew Type "O" at the bottom of an artificial lake, where it had been since it got stuck in the mud after being used to build the dam that created the lake back in 1925. When the dam broke a couple of years ago, after a torrential rain caused severe flooding, the lake drained and the Thew was exposed once again. Someone salvaged it and is in the process of restoring it to working condition

Yep Beaverton is right on my drive to the Wooden Shoe from down by Howell. I live in Hartland, Michigan and I drove over the Wixom Lake bridge on M-30 100 times going to the Wooden Shoe. I had to alter my course a couple years ago, after the dam broke. ben/ michigan

It was the first time I learned that an excavator powered by a steam engine existed! It's so unique and wonderful that the operator is alerting people to the surroundings with a steam whistle before scooping up the soil with the excavator and rotating the arm with the entire upper half of the body.❤

It is very pleasant to look at the work of equipment from the past. I am once again convinced of the genius of scientists and inventors. It's also interesting: do those who looked at least for a second have any thoughts about the work of workers on these machines? Yes, undoubtedly, physical labor was facilitated thousands of times, but at the same time, how hellish was the work on such mechanisms for stokers and operators?! How long was the working day? No unions and no vacations. I'm not talking about health insurance at all. It seems to me that the characters of this video are primarily people, ordinary workers of that time.

There is a major error in the video's text. The steam shovels shown do not have a hydraulic system and instead directly uses the steam to power three steam engines. One at the base to move the crane allowing the shovel to move up and down and another moving the rack and pinion so the shove can move closer or further away and a small one at the base to rotate and drive it around.

Yes they can dig in the ground. Just like what was mentioned above, all of these shovels have been donated to a museum (WMSTR) so as antiques their main job now is to play in the “sand box” and put on a show for guests. Fun fact the 50-B shown here was my grandfathers, and up until we restored the Kentuckian shovel it was the largest operating steam shovel left!
