In 2000 I was in Sri Lanka I visited Colombo to kandy city Beautiful country and people

Very good video of lovely countryside and a fascinating steam engine. I was on a business trip to Lanka in Dec. 1990 and was based in Kandy for nearly 2 weeks but saw very little evidence of much rail traffic of any sort, and none of it steam. I'd love to return for a visit and take a ride on this train especially (or any Sri Lankan passenger service, actually). And I grieve for the country these days and the fuel crisis it's going through -- may it soon be resolved and let Lanka prosper in peace! Actually I'd love to return for a real vacation in Sri Lanka for ANY reason -- the people I met were so kind and welcoming, their history and culture fascinating, and the food fabulous! So much of the country is beautiful scenery -- and studded with many gorgeous waterfalls as well as ancient temples and impressive structures built centuries ago by Lankan lords. (My group of visitors and hosts took several road trips out of Kandy, such as to Anuradhapura and Nuwara Eliya, plus a long drive from N.Eliya back to Colombo via Rajatnapura and other southern towns.) FWIW, I'm from the USA and have only the highest regard for the delights of Lanka and the greatest sympathy for the troubles its lovely people have endured.

I road that in mid 70's. I live Sri Lanka and India when steam was the tech of the day.

I live in kandy and travel a lot to Colombo by train but I have never seen that train In my whole life.

We used to live in Mannar in the 1950 and 1960 and used to travel on the sleeping compartments night train to Colombo it was a overnight trip and enjoyed the trip also used to travel from Mt Lavinia to Wawduwa daily from St Thomas College and back home each night ,Love those days of steam trains , Is there in 2024 still tourist trains operating any where in Sri Lanka 😂😂❤❤❤"………

Wow! Awesome! I didn't think these trains existed anymore. India had some nice ones that they put away. Bangladesh too had some beautiful old steam locomotives that they put away. They had people that loved the old trains that would work for free. I thought it was some international thing because they are very high polluting trains. Notice the carriages are far from the engine because of the smoke.

Good to see an engine that isn't leaking steam from every joint.

They've retained everything - semaphore signals, token exchange, the lot. So nostalgic!👍

Fascinating locomotive... a very British mixture of advanced practice (outside Walschaerts gear and Piston Valves) and old fashioned practice (combined riveted saddle and smokebox wrapper)....

This is very scenic route and should be promoted as a tourist ride.

They are still hooping up orders! I broke my finger on the U.P. in Grand Junction Colorado in the '60s catching orders from an order stick. Never missed a day of work either. Boy, times were sure different back then!

We are still using 1820 steam trains and 1920 lanka asok leyland...maybe for tourism...lol...but we should use electric bullet train and solar electric buses
