I would love to have a launch like this for cruising on the river... I've done a number of tours on an old steam tub and spent a lot of my time in the engine room, there is just something about steam engines that I find fascinating. Beautiful boat and a terrific little engine, thanks for posting.

Awesome boat! Had no idea people still made boats like this. This is an amazing and beautiful little boat.

im young but i find these engines fascinating and soothing to the ear, gas engines are cool but its hard to relax with all the noise

What is he using to insulate his steam line? I've got a similar layout and keep accidentally burning my arm reaching past it for stuff.

the best solution is to use old news print to absorb the oil in the hot well.

Some air dissolvesinto water, that includes Oxygen, and that makes the water corrosive (the dissolved oxygen will cause rusting of boiler parts), so providing boiler water that has Oxygen removed is better for the life of the boiler.

Fred Rosse I don't know what material his boiler is made of. A steel boiler should never be stored wet. Take it from my experience, retubing a boiler is not fun.

Earl, is this a Mallinson double simple he is using? This boat is gorgeous.
@steamgeeza

No, it's a double simple of Will's own design. Piston valves on both cylinders set at an angle to accommodate the Bremmer reversing. Very clever, very small. very economical of steam and a delight to the eye

Those don't look like Code safeties. I was told these couldn't be run at Lees Mills. Are they code if so what company/model?
@steamgeeza
@steamgeeza 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jared: The safety valves seen here Will's own design and not code. They are exquisite and set to go off 5 psi apart, as I recall. They work perfectly. Will has a code sealed safety valve installed forward of the stack to comply at Lees Mill. However, we all have seen problematic coded and sealed valves and, frankly, were it not for code compliance I would personally trust Will's valves more than the over the counter varieties.

Very Nice! That was my issue with the black Staffe - a small enough coded valve still didn't work well. The pressure was fairly consistent but the blow down amount and the fact that it unload far too much capacity for the little boiler was not fun. The small scaled safety's with adjustable blow down amount worked flawless, quieter, and more matched to the boilers capacity. Fun fun.

It is a modified Roberts-type water tube boiler of Will's own and manufacture. See my webpage at www.earlmorse.org/steamboatingpages/steamhappens25equinox/equinox.htm for more details.

Question: Would this be considered an internal cumbustion engine or rather an external cumbustion engine when it comes to the corporate "UNITED STATES" CORPORATION COMPANY'S laws when they ban motor boats from certian waters? ....in some places you can paddle a boat by human power or electric and get around there restrictive corporate policies. I see no reason an external fire being used to creat steam has any chance of poluting the water in any way.

OOPS...Some steamboats use oil internally to lubricate the cylinders during cruising or in preparing to shut down. If the exhaust is passed over the side it will carry the lube with it. However, If the exhaust is condensed to water and reused in the boiler, absorbants are usually included in the plumbing that remove the oil before the water is passed back to the boiler. There are steam oils available that are fairly biodegradable and use animal fat as the lubricant. Then again, since most steamboats have open, flow-through lubrication of the external parts, oil can get into the bilgewater fairly easily unless care is taken to catch and absorb the oil before it can get to the bilges. It can get messy, sometimes.

Deoxygenated water? So it was full of hydrogen? Because you take the oxygen out of water and that's all that's left.
@steamgeeza
@steamgeeza 8 жыл бұрын
+salemcripple Salem, The chemically bound oxygen in H2O doesn't cause rust, rather it's the oxygen dissolved in the water that causes rusting. A sealed bottle of 7Up has lots of CO2 dissolved in it. You can't see it till you pop the cap and it outgasses and produces bubbles. The warmer the soda the more vigorous the outgassing. Our ambient boiler feed water contains 5 to 14 parts per million dissolved oxygen as it comes in from the lake. Air contains about 20% oxygen, about 200,000 parts per million. At operating pressure our boiler water is about 325 or more degrees F, and the dissolved gasses in it come out of solution quite readily as it is heated. When we put up our full boilers at the end of cruising, the contents are signficantly outgassed. With so little oxygen remaining in them rusting is minimal. If we reintroduce outside air into the boiler at this point the wet steel is now exposed to 200,000 parts per million oxygen and rusting will occur. To minimize boiler rusting you can leave it full and deoxygenated, or empty and dry, or add a chemical (boiler treatment) to the water that will combine with the oxygen making it unavailable to the rusting process. Sorry I didn't explain this better originally.. EM

Combustion /kəmˈbʌs.tʃən/ or burning[1] is a high-temperature exothermic redox chemical reaction between a fuel (the reductant) and an oxidant, usually atmospheric oxygen, that produces oxidized, often gaseous products, in a mixture termed as smoke. Combustion in a fire produces a flame, and the heat produced can make combustion self-sustaining.

You idiot. Internal combustion refers to fuel burning inside the engine cylinder NOT the firebox.
