Sabaton History

2 жыл бұрын

From the first landships of the Great War to the massive armor-battles of Prokhorovka and El-Alamein - the introduction of the tank to the battlefield had changed warfare forever. Impregnable to small-arms fire, they crushed barbed-wire and field fortifications underneath their tracks, paving the way for the infantry's advance. In independent formations they surged forward at the head of the offensive, outmaneuvering the enemy's defenses and wreaking havoc in their lines. From the Mark V to the T-34, from the Tiger to the Centurion, - the evolution of armor is the history of Steel Commanders.

Where swimming comes from: amphibious tanks. Helps when this is posted within a day of Drachinifel's video about Imperial Japanese Army ships, which ironically showed an Imperial Japanese Navy amphibious tank at the beginning (the Type 2 Ka-Mi light amphibious tank, which was inspired by an IJA design), so it was on my mind. The Allies had amphiibious tanks as well (the Duplex Drive or "Donald Ducks", for example). Maybe this could be mentioned if you do a part 2. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Great video even without this info, and I hope Indy was checked for a concussion after the crash (currently dealing with vertigo for unknown reasons myself, I completely understand Indy's inadvertant George of the Jungle theme reenactment 😉).

Over the years, the most common division of tanks was by weight. In this classification, the following were distinguished: light tanks - weighing 5-20 t (e.g. T-26, PzKpfw I, 7TP), medium tank - Masina 20-45 t (e.g. T-34, PzKpfw V Panther, M4 Sherman), heavy tank - 45 t on top (e.g. IS-2, PzKpfw VI Tiger, T26 Super Pershing). main tank (combat, linear) - generator of tanks distinguished after World War II, usually the main model of tanks (e.g. T-72, Leopard 2, M1 Abrams). Tanks were divided less often according to the caliber of armament: tanks with light armament - caliber up to 50 mm (e.g. PzKpfw III), tanks armed with a tank - caliber up to 85 mm (e.g. T-34/85) tanks with heavy armament - caliber up to 152 mm (eg KW-2). These classifications were spaced apart in different groups [5] that were excluded between different tanks, and the no longer produced heavy tanks became blurred. Due to the medieval tactical tanks, they are divided into: special tanks, intended, thanks to the special provision for performing special tasks (tanks due to their armament, equipment), some armies are distinguished by airborne tanks. Niekiełg the name that describes the vehicle is part of a de facto tank. An example is anti-aircraft tanks, tanks are a form of counter-rotating guns.

@zachsmith1676
@zachsmith1676 2 жыл бұрын
I'm of the belief that the "3 key components of tank design" isn't quite right... it should be 4 key components; Mobility, Firepower, Protection, Production Capability Tiger and Panther are an example of tanks which score really low on Production Capability, the Design is good but the German industrial base couldn't really meet the production demands of the design. Sherman and T-34 are good designs in their own right but more importantly the industrial base for their respective countries could definitely meet the production demands of the design. I.e having the best tank on paper doesn't mean crap if you can't reliably produce the thing... just my opinion, you're welcome to disagree with me.
@whysoserious8666
@whysoserious8666 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, logistical support and reliability is probably more important than armor and firepower. A tanker is more mechanic than soldier and spends more time doing maintenance on his tank than on the firing range.
@VayleGW
@VayleGW 2 жыл бұрын
@@whysoserious8666 I might add that another important factor is crew survivability. Although the M4 Sherman suffered from less thick armour than some other late WW2 tanks, the tank had the lowest casualty rate of tankers throughout the war, with less than 1 tanker dying per tank destroyed. It's easy building a new tank, though it might take time... however training new experienced crew is a whole different thing.
@whysoserious8666

Sabaton needs a song or at least a verse in a song about breaking track, greasing road wheels, and waiting for parts to add to the story of armored warfare.
@xcritic9671
@xcritic9671 2 жыл бұрын
Production capability is already an intrinsic factor of all the other components, if you wanted to in the 1940's you could spend enough money to have a tank that does 50kph with 100+mm of armor and a high velocity gun. On the flip side if you wanted to just attach shed roofing to a tractor and mount machine guns on it you could do that too. Really the production of a tank doesn't mean anything towards how good or bad the "design" is, but rather how effective that design is going to be for the country that's producing it, that's why the U.S. today can make tanks that cost 9 million per unit while 3rd world countries have to make do with Soviet hand-me-downs.
@fazole
@fazole 2 жыл бұрын
When you add production capability you get beyond the qualities of the tank and into logistics. IF the Germans had been able to produce 50,000 tanks, they still wouldn't have had enough fuel to run them. So for them, quality had to be emphasized over quantity.

Love the song and the history behind it! Your my favorite band and I was happy I could have seen you preform in the Netherlands. Now I did have a question about a topic no one has covered ever yet. The 80 years war of independence of the Netherlands against the Spanish. It’s quite interesting and quite amazing story behind a small weak country taking on a dominant world power as Spain in that time period. I don’t know if you can look into it nor do I expect you guys could make anything out of that part of history but it would atleast be worth learning some history as not only Netherlands fought in that war but also nearly all European powers against the growing power of Spain Anyway I wish you all a amazing weekend and best wishes to the whole band! 💜

That's actually kind of an interesting take on it really. It was the closest ships came to being essentially a (modern design of) tank on the sea. The fact they basically lacked the weaponry to take each other out kind of reflects how much more weight you can bring in armor on water compared to land. There has to be a song worth of material in that particularly famous battle.

I saw one of your videos that if you ever wanted song suggestions we type it in the comments, i doubt this will gain tranction but here is a suggestion for a song. it's 1846, the mexican-american war is in full swing. American forces have pushed south towards the mexican valley and the capital, however they would have to go through the city of Monterrey. General Zachary Taylor needs the city not only to move forward but also to capture it and use is a supply hub. at his command he has 6000 american soldiers (including 2000 cavalry) along with 40 artillery pieces. Mexican forces on the other hand have around 4000 regulars 2000 cavalry and 48 pieces of artillary, including the imfamous St. Patricks batalion "Los San Patricios" lead by Brigadier commander John O´Reilly. who was origanlly part of the american army but defected to the mexican cause for equal rights (cause americans at that point in time were still very racist and xenophobic towadrs everyone practically). But him and his batalion held out in the city of Monterrey for three days along with the mexican forces, for three days Taylor Tried and failed to take even the outer defenses held out by St Paticks batalion numbering about 300-800 men. However on the third day mexican general Pedro Ampudia declared capitulation of the city, right when Taylor was about ready to fall back before General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna´s army arrived, but Santa Anna was delayed from logistical issus, so Pedro surrendered the city inflicting 531 casualties on the american forces while only having 361 casualties of his own. This only prooved that this batalion wasnt messing around, because of the defense of monterrey they were given the "cruz de honor de la angostura" (a medal of bravery to put it that way) ordered and given by Santa Anna himself. After monterrey the St. Patricks batalion would fight in many battles including the battle of Buena vista in Feburary of 1847 where they anihaleted an american batalion counterattacking their positions, by opening point blank artillary fire in to american lines, hell they even captured two american artillary pieces to use against the americans in the valley. Again Taylor was about to concede defeat and pull back, one of his soldiers yelled out "Sir all is lost we can´t break through!" Taylor only replied "I know"but to his surprise, the mexican army was falling back because of political termoil in Mexico City. Needles to say Captain O´Reilly was pissed along with most his batalion, victory was so close yet so far. The last battle they would fight would be the battle of Chuburusco in August 20 1847 where O´Reilly, his batalion of 250 and 1150 other mexican militia and soldiers numbering in 1400 men held out against the American horde of 8500 men lead by general Winfield Scott, needles to say they had no chance to retreat and they couldn´t surrender, so they fought for hours even until the defenders ran out of ammo they still fought, stealing americna guns from the ground hoping to fire, bayonets fixed and a melee would proced for only minutes at a time sudenly BAM one of the poweder storages blew up because of a lucky artillary round, by sun set, the defenders where exhausted surrounded and with no amunition and the St. Patricks batalion was fianlly captured and silenced but at a cost 21 american oficers and 245 americans were either killed or wounded whilst 238 mexicans were killed or wounded, most of them were artillary men. When Genral Twiggs entered the field to accept mexican surrender General Perdro María Anaya famously said "Si hubiera parque, no estaría usted aquí" if their were no field you wouldnt be here. Those who survived the battle where taken as prisoner up till the capture of Mexico City and fall of Chapultepec castle, where in three diferent days the survivng St. Patricks batalion members were marked as deserters with the letter D with hot iron on the 9th 10th and 13th of september of 1847 16, 4 and 31 members of the St. Patricks batalion where excuted, whether it be by volley or hanged, the surviving members including O´Reilly went into hiding and retired from military life for good. In august 31st 1850 O´Reilly would pass away and at the same time the St. Patricks batalion was disbanded completly. P.S. soryy if its a little bit long but, i gotta squeez as mucb mexican history into this, there is a lot i didnt mention but i hope you get the picture. You guys are awsome love your music keep it up. Cheers form mexico :D

Excellent analysis. But I was expecting to hear about Italian and Japanese advances on tanks in the interwar years and during the second World War. I know, at least I think I know they were not as improving and advanced as the other powers mentioned in the video but I'd like to hear about them as for the advances since the second world War until today. Maybe in a part 2 possibly.

Charles de Gaulle also wrote a book about tanks and armor warfare. Just like Erwin Rommel. And The Steel General, Patton read those and many more.

Primo Victory was the first one in WoT (and in my opinion the better one) with the Sabaton crew and unique voiceline. STRV K is the second on with slightly different voicelines and a soundtrack version of Steel Commanders playing at the beginning of the game.
