This structure is worth it! If the house is not on the move, horizontal and vertical lines are enough, fill the cemboard in place for the wall and it's good to go.

I ended up doing the wood framing, because the metal would of taken forever...I was never able to truelly finish it, i ended up buying a big house close to my job after trying the tiny house living...but it works great as a spare guest house, or craft room, or an elaborate dog house for great Danes...that 2950 was materials only

@livingbig
@livingbig 9 жыл бұрын
I agree. Still, it's very hard to find materials that will last forever. That's why it's important to think about what happens to the materials when they reach the end of their life. That's why in our build, all of the materials can either be composted or recycled at the end of their time in the house. :)

Nice frame, but I'd replace the cheesy self drilling screws with steel pop rivets. Screws are okay for stationary applications (when they're not stripped 7:31), but in a vehicle they'll work loose over time, rivets are more resilient. Ideally the joints would also be bonded with windshield glue, and the walls would be separated from the deck by a foam strip.
@lliaolsen728
@lliaolsen728 4 жыл бұрын
Didn't see it strip the sound was the slip of the driver once it reached the torque limit. Most new drivers have an adjustment to set the max torque so you don't strip the self tapping screws. They also could use a voltage limiter like Makita does to do more delicate work like working on Computer Motherboards and such.

Love your videos especially when you visit and interview other tiny owners and builders. I believe you mentioned that the trailer you had made was aluminum is it because it would be lighter than the steel ones , correct?. Did Frame Cad make you the trailer as well?. I have become a huge fan of tiny homes and am in the research planning stages in building my own and one for my daughter and am interested in of one you are building with the steel frame structure . Love the idea, wood is heavier. And more expensive . Would like to lighten the load in my build and pocket so to speak. Am a Carpenter by trade and have made furniture . So will be doing much of the rest of the build on my own. You rock brother! Looking forward to the completion of your new home. God bless. Nikko

I Can see the base flexing as the workers walk around on it. Seems like this would cause a lot of gaps/looseness over time in the build? 6:17 Also Steel frame combined with steel cladding seems like it would transfer a lot of heat/cold from outside through the steel into the house?. Also triple stacked parts of frame cant be insulated?

This looks terrific! While steel is the same or perhaps a little lower cost than wood as a construction material, how much does it add to the cost of your build to have a company like Framecad assemble it for you? Certainly the time savings has to be factored in too, however, since what takes them a couple of hours to construct with a small army of workers would obviously take a person far longer to do on their own. It certainly gets the job done quickly and efficiently even if it adds to the total cost somewhat. And when you refer to SIPs in the comments as not being "eco-friendly," I assume you mean living in a structure with all the chemicals they're infused with as opposed to their manufacture per se since the iron ore mining industry is not often considered the most eco-friendly. I just find many people (not necessarily you) professing adherence to a green mindset conveniently overlooking the eco-costs of the materials and products they've decided they can't live without while condemning the choices of others for things they've deemed bad. Again, not casting aspersions at you. Have to admit, this is one of the most fascinating tiny house builds I've seen to date. As I watch this come together -- and the videos aren't being posted fast enough! -- I become inspired to build one of my own and I love that you're sharing the entire process. Thanks!

I'm not sure how much they charge to make it for you but steel framing studs cost less than wood framing, so at least with the material side it's cheaper (if you frame yourself). I think I figured it up to be around 15-1800 in materials to frame a 30x8 tiny home.

I think this movement is really cool but as I'm watching it I'm wondering about heating efficiency because I don't see any insulation in all these videos. Especially the floor just being a single layer of wooden planks...I thought the NZ winter could be compared to the middle European winter and I imagine the heating costs going up when the cold wind blows beneath the house. Same thing with earthships, I was really interested in that but in the climate of the area I'm living in it would just be a very expensive mouldy hole in the ground

No one ever talks about where the trailer is from, or how it was custom build for a specific tiny home. No one ever talks about the proper way of sealing these tiny homes. (for instance, the metal frame was just screwed to the deck flooring? nothing in between? no sealer?) how is this water tight? it makes no sense to me. put together like spit and bubble gum.
