Steeleye Span performing 'The Prickly Bush', from the 1996 album 'Time'. Available to buy from the Park shop here: parkrecords.com/product/prkcd3...
Released in 1996, after a seven-year hiatus. The impetus for the album was a 25th anniversary reunion tour the year before. In some ways, the album represents a revival of Steeleye Span. After a 16 year period during which the band released only three albums, the band entered a more productive phase that continues down to the present.

Good to see the brilliant Bob Johnson for once, he was seldom featured on these videos, a great guitarist and arranger, so much so that the band still, to this day, play his parts as he played them, good guy, greatly missed.

Peter, Paul and Mary sing this as 'Hangman". I think it's on their 'A Song Will Rise' album. Led Zeppelin performs it as 'Gallows Pole' which, I'm pretty sure dates to a Leadbelly version. All slightly different and all quite good.
@timward276
@timward276 2 жыл бұрын
The LZ version definitely was taken from the Leadbelly version. I think the Led Zeppelin version is the only one where the hangman kills the condemned man despite getting to sleep with his sister anyway ("but now I laugh and pull so hard to see you swinging from the gallows pole")
@stanleykolodziejczyk5627
@stanleykolodziejczyk5627 2 жыл бұрын
@@timward276 Indeed! Without swingin' from the pole the song has little impact. It also conjures the image of a single beam as opposed to a traditional setup with stairs and crossbeams, et all. The crudeness adds insult to the action by understatement. I've read that many crucifixions used this method of simply transfixing the condemned person to a single upright beam

Are there any elements of the melody of "prickle eyed bush" or "The Maid Freed from the Gallows" that have been consistent throughout history?

Great song, but not truly live. Steeleye played 2 nights at this venue, and played them live to a real audience. But the whole of the "Time" documentary/concert is actually overdubbed. So it looks like they were miming, and you can see it seems like there are many cuts. Either there was a problem with sound quality of the recordings, or they wanted the studio recordings on it. Either way, it's great to see but not properly authentic.

This is actually an incrediably old song, you can find everything from Scandinavian to Sicilian versions. The story has been used over and over, thats the great thing about folk music, anyone can hear something diffrent in a song and make it their own.
@luxford60
@luxford60 6 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Zep did credit their version of this as Traditional - there are several songs where they did claim composer credits that they didn't deserve, but Gallows Pole isn't one of them.
@dfpguitar
@dfpguitar 5 жыл бұрын
do you have any links to traditional versions? Id really like to hear trad versions of the melody. And see if there is any element of the melody that was consistent throughout history, or if it is just the story within the song? The chorus of this version is the same as bellowheads. But it is nothing like Niles version.
