Today I've been listening to the absolutely superb new Analogue Productions UHQR release of Steely Dan's first album: Can't Buy A Thrill.
Many thanks to David Brook of Brook Audio, MCRU and The Vinyl Adventure.

We can all try to describe the unbelievable sounds of the classiest rock band that is Steely Dan, but ultimately is quite futile and we all fall short on the layers of sounds and brilliant lyrics. Can we all just keep it simple and just say…IT’S STEELY-LICIOUS!!! Love your post… greetings from Miami 🤘🏼😎

I'll remember that for the next one: assuming of course (which I am sure it will be) that it is truly STEELY-LICIOUS! ;-)

You do realize that at Analogue Productions they use vintage Technics SL-1200's and 1,000's as well As the $5K new SL-1200G's, all equipped with Shure M97xe cartridges using genuine Shure stylii. Although you have a great looking turntable with excellent tone arms, if you want to hear the records as AP intended, you should use what they use to play them. Great video!
@DaveDenyer

Hi Automated Electronics. I'm glad you liked the video. I have seen inside many record cutting studios as well as a handful of videos from Chad at AP / QRP. In fact most lathes seem to have a vintage Ortofon or SME tonearm with a fairly basic Shure cartridge fitted to check the quality of the cut. That seems to be pretty much standard practise... Of course what the record company / cutting engineer etc uses to verify such things doesn't mean you can't use better: significantly better in fact. Not that the Technics SL-1200 series turntables aren't good. I have a lot of respect for them. Thanks for watching and thanks for your feedback.

“My God, this is good.” That sums it up, but I am more inclined to say “fantastic”. This is also my favorite SD record and it was a whole new listening experience. The idea of cost melted out of my mind after 30 seconds of Do It Again. Great review Dave! Happy Holidays!

Agree totally, a great album. My gateway to SD. Such a listenable album, without being bland, characterized by strong cachy songs, inventive song structures, high musicianship, and caustic sharp witty lyrics. No weaknesses throughout. Behind Aja, & The Royal Scam my fav Dan album.

I bought this one. I plan on getting Royal Scam and onwards and then pick up the regular 45rpm black versions of the ones in between when they appear. Where I am I end up paying close to double, so I have to be selective. Agree that the quality is second to none from Chad and his team.

People need to get over the price these have not been reissued since the 70s. Most SD early pressings in any kind of VG shape are now running between $50 and $65. So a $150 is really not that big a deal considering what they are going to cost on the secondary market
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I do agree. I know not exactly the case with Steely Dan, but many of these ‘high-end’ reissues, whilst quite a bit of money are still less than a decent original would cost, if you can find one…
@stephenparker9434

Even If not played, a limited copy seriel numbered edition (due to scarcity) would become a prized collectors item and woud exceed inflation and money in the bank in the long run, like vintage wine! and would generate a profitable investment. Although as a music fan I think music is to be played, and bottles of wine to be drunk rather than stored in a cellar.!

Interesting dichotomy you flag up, Dave. 90% of the quality, for between half & two-thirds the price. Not withstanding the considerable shelving space spared. Although better to sit on your shelf now, than wait 2 Years. Decisions decisions. 🙂 Merry Christmas & I look fwd to more great content in 2023.
