Steely Dan refers to a single woman's best friend. There are only two permanent Steely Dan members, Walter Becker (RIP) and Donald Fagan. All other musicians on their records are studio musicians. This allowed Walter and Donald to chose the very best musicians for each song, and each instrument and vocal. When they wanted a particular sound for one song, they chose just the musician who could produce the sound they were looking for. This is why you are hearing the very best drummers, guitar players, sax players for each and every song. If I were you, I would do it the way I did it, the way most of us did it, start with the first album and listen. This will give you many years on pleasure as you move up their discography. Fagan's solo album, Night Fly, is also top notch.

This is off their debut album. Each album gets sonicaly more perfect. One of their later albums AJA' is perfection. There are dozens of gems.

SD is a deep well. Dive in. My suggestion for your next song is “Green Earrings.” Kind of a deep cut, but I like it. It’s hard to go wrong with ANY song from any of their 70’s albums. Honestly.

Incredible production. You can hear a drumstick hitting a precise point on a ride cymbal. Clear as a bell on a cold morning

Not a Fender Rhodes. It's a Hohner Pianet with the vibrato switch thrown. I used one on the road for a number of years (with a broken vibrato). And the keyboard solo in the middle uses what, I believe, they refer to on the album jacket as a "plastic organ." The nearest I can figure is that they mean a kids' organ with a fan that blows through a set of reeds & plays like a keyboard. Glad you like the song. I think it might have been their first radio hit.

You should listen to everything they did. It is worth your time. These sessions used some of the best musicians in LA at the time and Donald Fagen and Walter Becker obsessed every single detail. Every thing they did had hard grooves, quirky cynical lyrics, and surprises all over. They have been sampled a lot. Start with the album Aja. Be safe.

Another song Steely Dan did early in their career is called Ricki, Don't Lose That Number. They had many hits in the 70's and early 80's then faded out. Great music. Try their song from the FM Movie soundtrack called FM.

In a famous novel by heroin addict William Borroughs, "Naked Lunch", which is a hallucinogenic narrative, there is a Dildo by that name, Steely Dan - thus the name. I think they must have been really stoned when they decided on that. This was a unique band because it was only two guys who wrote the songs, did the arrangements, and they brought in the best musicians in the country to play, and in their great album Aja, they would bring dudes in to play until they got the sound they wanted: and they were getting sax players from Miles Davis' original band to play on that record; they had drummers who had played with every body who was anybody. If you are into recording, you have to see this docu on the recording of Aja, with all kinds of footage about the actual musicians there contributing licks, and their experiences. But two brilliant dudes, really, to write all these songs, and the arrangements, most of the solos, etc. But the musicians they played with - a million dollar band man. Could never afford to employ them on the road. Check this out - a lesson in recording. Steely Dan is a great band indeed. And I have a great recommendation for you. If you enjoy watching talented musicians play live, it would be awesome to see you react to the 1973 live performance video of "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group. In terms of the sheer fun of watching them perform, they are one of the most entertaining and musically talented groups out there. I think you would get a big kick out of it. All are epic, funky, and with the best/most interesting musicianship on the planet.

this is really really worth checking out : Bat Chain Puller - by Captain Beefheart - from the album Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) (1978) .. it's a purely individual style - at times plays with rhythm, words, tones .. a welcome change from standard electric band products

Back in the day when I was singing in a band, sometimes what we would do with the vocals is due to tracks of the same vocals. It was a pretty cool effect. And it's kind of fun to sing along with yourself. LOL

"Steely Dan" was Walter Becker & Donald Fagen, but after they stopped touring & focused on studio recording they had many GREAT musicians to help them on their albums. The term "steely dan" will warrant a Google search, as I'd rather not repeat it in mixed company.

It took a very long time to get these things together, very complex, and the concentration of all these musicians, reading charts, with all these little nuances, all have to be there perfect, and still sound natural and like it was just improvised. And they get it, right down to this final little keyboard tag at the end -- and the look on these guy's faces -- very cool -- very cool - master musicians getting it right

I DJ’d in a club here in the 80’s. I would put Billy Jean (M.J. album cut) on the turntable, mix it with the 12” instrumental of the same song so I could lay this song under it with Billy Jeans beat/rhythm. Didn’t hardly have to change speed, songs are very similar!

The music volume could be louder. This band is known for their high production value in the studio, the arrangements, layers and clarity of instruments. They auditioned 8 or 9 guitarists to play the solo on 'Peg'. Real studio perfectionists, they didn't tour for most of that era. Their lyrics usually have a story behind them too, lots of tales of outcasts and losers, people on the sidelines.
