Broke every rule for a once mainstream band. As someone once said ‘Steely Dan is your favourite bands favourite band’. Hooked since I was 8. Still feel the same 50 years later.

They had a couple popular songs but I’d say they were never a “mainstream” band. Fagen and Becker always had a style that is an acquired taste. Between their two albums which had popular singles: Can’t Buy a Thrill and Aja, they had three albums, all of which contained quite a bit of risk taking. Even in Can’t Buy a Thrill and Aja, most songs are odd to the mainstream ear. I think you’re looking at a band so undeniable that they couldn’t help but hit the billboard charts on a few of their songs. However, they never had the goal of making mainstream music, and their catalogue is mostly unknown by the average music listener, in spite of the few songs that became popular.

I grew up listening to Steely Dan because of my dad. I remember getting laughed at in school when I brought it up so never really talked about it with others since. SD always holds a special place in my heart because of the good music but also because of the connection with my dad. My music taste is pretty eclectic and stumbled onto your SD react when I was listening to your Haley Reinhart’s “Creep” react… and I was surprised to see you doing SD reacts. Not that I stopped listening to SD but my music experience has grown while growing up but because of you the nostalgia filled me up and immediately bought their greatest hits. My dad likes the classics but I’ll be sure to introduce him to some of their more recent hits.

You have turned me into someone who gets a little excited when I see you've posted your next steely dan reaction. I knew little to nothing of them before you brought them to us. Thank you - and thank you for the interesting production notes too...I don't always have my headphones on when I hit play, but I go back and re-listen with them to see if i feel the mix as you describe it. I really enjoy that!

Great reaction, enjoyed watching you enjoy the song and almost get your groove on. I love the way the musicians of that period used instruments that were not 'typical' for the genre, it added so much depth and flavor to the music.

Great tune, more to come on this album. Interesting comments on the technical aspects of the recording. I just love Donald’s voice. Very funky tune. Musical excellence. 🔥🔥

What a tune! Keith carlock is the drummer on this one and he is almost robotic with his precision and timing. He’s touring with them now. You’re Inching closer to “everything must go”…… can’t wait to see that reaction!

Things I Miss the Most is very good as well. Last Mall and Blues Beach are not as strong, like some of the songs from the first album and part of side 2 or Pretzel Logic expect the title track,

Please do not feel that you have finished your Steely Dan journey untill you have hit all of Donald's solo albums. The Nightfly and Kamakiriad are the ones that are most known, but I really like Morph the Cat and Sunken Condos as well.

The feeling of having heard all of the really good Steely Dan songs and the just damn good ones, is a bit disconcerting. Donald Fagen's solo albums will help, but they'll never really soothe the crave. BUT, the 88 plus fabulous songs age like wine. A band called "The New Mastersounds" helps me cope.

Good to see you moving forward D. Don't sleep on the title track from SD's "Two Against Nature." It's a voodoo powered bayou-brawler in 6/8 time. So few of their songs feel like they are working up a sweat, or really leaning into it. In "Two Against," you can feel the accelerator getting pushed. Bassist extraordinaire Stanley Clark (played with Return to Forever & everyone) just had a birthday. A perfect song of his for your revamped channel is "School Days" from '76. The musicians in the crowd (you) will have to lie down for a while afterward. Keep it up.

People like to capsulize this guys, that is yuppy/ fratty music or people that goal oriented will gravitate to this music but musically these men cannot be confined or compartmentalized.
