"You don't remember, the queen of soul." You're right. It's an indictment to young people that they don't know the giants who made the sounds they hear today possible. Popular music is standing on the shoulders of giants who had to fight for every micro-byte of airplay. What makes me smile the most is him appealing to the gods, "The Cuervo Gold, the fine Colombian, make tonight a wonderful thing." Perhaps if we get high enough it will neutralize our differences.

Cuervo Gold is tequila. The fine Colombian is weed. They have nothing in common to talk about. They do not like the same music,so they can't dance. The age difference is too much to overcome. The only thing that can give him a chance to take home this beauty and "make tonight a wonderful thing" is the " Cuervo Gold and the fine Colombian "

Hi, I'm Tom and was a white teenager from Detroit, where I lived in a segregated neighborhood and listened to all the Black and Soul and loved it. It's nice to see you checking out the white Rock music which was an offshoot of the Black blues from the South before 1950. This group "Steely Dan" was really a 2 man band that came out in the late 1960's with an unusual, jazz/blues sound. The 2 men that started the band, started with other members but started using, "session musicians" who are typically fantastic musicians who are hired the band for albums because the session musicians are better than the band's musicians. Steely Dan very often hired the best musicians in the country. But the 2 founding members wrote all the songs and played, as well. Hear more of thier music. In answer to your question, Cuervo Gold is a top brand of Mexican Tequila liquor. Fine Columbian, was in the 1960s the best marijuana. So the lyrics seem to say that this older man can't relate to a 19 year old girl unless they both get very 'high,' and have a night of fun where the age difference isn't a problem if they are high and relate on a funny level. Good luck and try other songs from this group in the future. Their lyrics are fun to try figuring out. Good luck to your reaction show! Tom

Steely Dan is, IMO, America's greatest R&R band. There is hardly such a thing as a bad SD song. The band is smart, clever (find out what the bands name means), funny, ironic, mature, well produced and always incredibly well played. There are just too many good songs to pick from. But try "Peg" and "Reelin' In The Years" next. People will give you tons of suggestions because SD is one hell of a rabbit hole...and yes, you should always listen to SD with a lyric video. By the way, Columbia at the time not only produced some of the best weed, but the country also produced, then and now, some of the best cocaine, so he could be talking about either or both.

'Hey Nineteen' is Steely Dan's late 1970s/early 1980s version of Rhythm N Blues. Lyrics about a guy in his early 30s out on a date w/ a 19 yr old....and the cultural gap shows. She's a disco-era young woman and he's a late 1960s R&B, Soul, Chicago-Blues, Bob Dylan and Jazz 'aging' Hipster...He himself was a 19 yr old 'way back' in 1967 when he was in college and was the 'Dandy of Gamma Chi Fraternity'...Fast forward to 1979/1980...A taste for Tequilla (Cuervo Gold is a brand) and some dynamite reefer (the Fine Colombian) is where he and she find common ground after all.

The group was Donald Fagen & Walter Becker (deceased) and mostly kept to the studio using a variety of studio musicians to produce perfected albums. Listen to the layers, the space each instrument is given. Don't be afraid to research the band, maybe look at the song meanings because there's often something below the surface of their lyrics. They write a lot about outsiders, losers, etc. and there's lots of irony.

This is my favorite Steely Dan song, and there are so many great ones. I liked your reaction. Scarsdale is a town in New York north of the city that is very wealthy, so the college girls in Boston get married and move on to the socialite life, leaving the singer to grow old watching yet another generation become more and more unrepeatable. The fine Colombian is I think a cigar, but it could also be just coffee. It's the luxuries of his bachelor life that he enjoys now. For more Steely Dan, I recommend Josie, Peg, Deacon Blues, Black Cow, and FM. The YT channel "Steely Ben" has made some lyric videos that are quite creative.

So I think (I didn’t look up the lyrics or anything) that it’s an older guy maybe in his late 30s or 40s telling himself that this young hot thang is wrong for him, because he’s older and she don’t even know Aretha Franklin but he’s feeling her energy and wants to get lost in it and enjoy the music party or whatever through her eyes, “let me slide along”. But once the cuevo gold comes in, inhibitions lessen and things might or might not happen. I went through something similar when I was 38 and this 23 year old was trying to get my attention. I thought to myself she’s too young for me, and what do we even have in common. But she was mature for her age and we had a lot in common. Fun times but with depth and respect. Love your energy btw much luck on your channel.

Lol...your need to look up the Cuervo Gold (tequila) and fine Colombian (Pablo Escobar cocaine) is a real-time "that's 'retha Franklin....she don't remember the Queen of Soul" moment. Dear, it’s not about lyrics mostly. Back in the old days we heard this stuff on the radio, let our minds sail along with the music. The Steely Dan guys themselves, were never interested in making music videos or explaining their lyrics. Imagine a time in the distant past, when musical content alone had to be enough…… Nothing visual to help sell it, and no lyrics to look at either, that is unless you bought the album!

An anecdote about the Steely Dan song: “Hey 19“. They had cut a record, and a second engineer came in to do some maintenance on the tracks, and accidentally erased one of their songs. Instead of trying to re-create it, Steely Dan decided to use “Hey 19”, a song they had written 20 years prior to that, and never used it. But it turned out great obviously.

He told you how old he is. Way back in 67, he was a hot young dude. Now he needs more than a sweet young thing, who has nothing in common with him. You can't catch what he is saying because you are not familiar with what he is talking about. Expensive tequila and a very good grade of weed. That's a harmonica, not a string. Do you realize you cut the song of before the end? It wasn't over. Ouch!
