Fagen is such a card, I remember hearing an interview he did on NPR in the 90's, probably 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross, I don't remember, when they were discussing his (then) new album, 'Kamakiriad' and one cut in particular that had the lyrics 'She's a virus wearing pumps and pearls'.. the interviewer, who was a woman, asked Fagen .. 'those are some pretty misogynistic lyrics, don't you think?..' and without missing a beat, Fagen answered,.. 'Hey man, if you don't like it.. make your own album..' I don’t think that’s true-either that they sampled it (you can tell that by just listening to the two songs, or the fact that sampling wasn’t “a thing” in 1974), or that they claimed to. Happy to be proven wrong, though.
@jeemjeem61904 жыл бұрын
@@bobrouse8634 Sampling wasn't really around when this song was recorded. That, and they had access to the best studio musicians. That bass line is great, but so easy to replicate. Donald Fagan was quoted “There was never a conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver’s intro."
@mesfromusa4 жыл бұрын
Whether Donald Fagan said there was no conscious thought about picking up Horace Silver's intro or not, it's absolutely what was done. The intros are exactly the same. Please check out “Sign in Stranger” by Steely Dan. Some tasty piano on that one!

Jamel (Jamal) this song brings me back to 1977 when I was staying with my sister in Atlantic City! It was before the casinos were built there and the Old Steel Pier was thriving. Thanks for the memories.

The first time I heard this was such a long time ago - and it blew me away. A perfect song right there. Just a great line “send it off in a letter to yourself”. And those key changes on the piano.... well they scratch an itch you never knew you had! X

Watching from the UK, I have really enjoyed you finding and reacting to many of the songs/albums/bands/artists that I have bought and seen live over the past 50+ years. Steely Dan have been in my top 10 bands of all time from 1973. Top of the list being Led Zeppelin. Thanks Jamel.

What are you talking about? They were the shit back in 89! We just don’t know who “they” were. Lol The guys in the videos were street dancers that got conned into keeping the sham going. The idea of Milli Vanilli is as never supposed to be a hit. But the songs struck a chord with millions of people. And the sleaze ball manager/producer took advantage of two young and naive dudes who didn’t even know how to speak English. Poor guys. One of them even committed suicide. You asshole!
