In this video I get salt out to the steers and am quite surprised by how much they missed it! I’m also trying out some new fly traps at the summer pasture. Finally, we head up to Vina to buy our 10 feeder pigs for this year.

My grandfather raised pigs. He kept 300 in a open field surrounded by two strand electric fence. I enjoyed feeding them as a kid. They all seemed to enjoy eating as they would all smack their lips. Grandfather would always keep two to butcher at home. He had a large iron pot that he filled with water over a wood fire to heat water to scrape the hair off the pig. He would then clean the pot and put the fat in it to render out lard. He would keep enough in the pot to cook cracklings in. Man they were good. Nothing like the bags of store bought pig skins as they had small pieces of meat attached to the cracklings. Those are great memories for me.

On the farm, we typically had Hampshire pigs…. occasionally there would be a red Duroc. I wanted the neighbors which I don’t know the names, but there was a white one like what you had. Anyway, I was around pigs, growing up my whole life, and I never saw pigs built the way the pigs, this man raises.(and you as well, Tyler !!). I wish my dad was alive to show him the confirmation of these pigs, young pigs, and also as adults. They’re just massive and they’re hind end… so very muscular and I can imagine it makes for some really good eating when you butcher. Sorry those of you who don’t like to hear that but there is nothing better than homegrown butchered meat. You know the grain fed you know the corn they had you know grass and hay ratio etc. and it all goes into the flavor of the meat and muscle. I like nothing better than a Bone in ham❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ days and days of great eating, no way meals with side dishes but sandwiches, too.

You are raising 10 pigs this time? I thought last time it was less......either way, it is nice to know where you get your pigs from. I also like how the pig farmer takes the pig's comfort into account. Yes we raise these animals for food. Doesn't mean their lives have to be miserable. Our farm was that way too back in the 1960s and 1970s.......thank you for being good farmers.....😊

He has some nice breeding stock and nice solid piglets. Nice to see the pigs are friendly and the boars mellow and seem to enjoy attention. The farrowing stall set up is nice for the sows and piglets. I enjoyed raising Duroc pigs, they were for the most part cooperative, liked attention and pretty mellow pigs. The piglets grew out very well and usually were at processing weight at 5 to 6 months old on no soy no gmo feed fed in a self feeder, garden scrap and what they ate in the field. I always had a waiting list of people wanting half and wholes for the freezer, the meat was outstanding. I am seriously thinking about finding 2 -3 young sows, breed by AI so I do not have to keep and maintain a boar again and starting to raise them year round. I am more than ready to retire from nursing and farm full time.

The key to success with fly traps is placement. You have to place them in a spot where livestock like to loaf. They also work better if they are in a shady area. Flies like to hop off the cattle and roost in cool shady spots.

I was watching another youtube channel today, which was Country View Acres and he was testing a solar generator. He was testing all kinds of things running on it. (Ecoflow solar generator, btw). He was running his TV and low and behold, he was playing FTR youtube channel, and he announced it. Cool stuff! On the fly traps in the field, you mentioned you saw those on Just a Few Acres, with Pete Larson. I just happen to watch that channel too. He had best results with those fly traps over the water tank, when the cows were drinking. You probably already knew that though. Great show as always!!! Thanks for you channel!! Jim

I had 5 hogs about 6 months of age and a 6 to 7 hour drive home was in August in Arkansas the hog had wheat stubble in the trailer for bedding and before I left I took a waterhose and wet them down and I wet them down just about every two hours to make sure they were cool. When I got home I fed them with a liberal ration of wet feed wheat shorts and water 💧 a very good ration for hogs in summer...

Re: : fly trap - if it doesn’t catch many, try putting it away from the salt blocks. The flies may decide that since the steers are there, food is better than an attractive smell. In gardening it’s the same - draw them away from where you don’t want them. Re: : berry vines by the water trough - if Mrs. FTR likes making jam & jelly, put a bird net over the bush and pick them as they ripen!

I’m kinda curious so why do you only have your steers at the lease pasture? It would make more sense to have all your cows there since your having to drive so far. It would be more time consuming having to go check on two herds of cattle than to just drive to one place and check on them all, and your pastures at your house would have a longer rest period.
@farmertylerranch4399
@farmertylerranch4399 2 жыл бұрын
That pasture isn’t big enough for the entire herd and the reason it’s only steers is so I don’t need another bull there
