In reference to our decision to spell the style as Whacking instead of Waacking: We will be sharing some information we've learned from our STEEZY Studio instructor and Whacking advisor Lorena Valenzuela @thelorenav, whose mentor is Viktor Manoel (One of the Original Punkers). First off, Whacking uses the word Whack because it's based on the old Batman comic book pop art texts, like "WHACK!" "BOOM!" "POW!". Anyways.... Around the 70's, a dancer named Tyrone Proctor moved from New York to participate in Soul Train (in California). There he met some of the Original Punkers and started learning from them. He later moved back to New York and started sharing this "west coast" style called "Waacking". Viktor didn't know why he started spelling it that way. Viktor thinks he just misspelled it because back in the day there was not a lot of documentation or written proof of what these guys were doing... so he just heard the word and thought it was spelled like that. The spread of misinformation came largely due to the fact that most of the Original Punkers died of AIDS in the 80's and 90's and Viktor retired from the dance industry because of the pain of losing all of his friends. However, Tyrone Proctor became very famous and was one of the few dancers from the early days of Whacking/Punking that was still teaching around the world. This means that much of the newer generations were taught by Tyrone. However... around 2009, Toni Basil brought Viktor back into the scene and valuable information about the style of Whacking and the Original Punkers started to spread. This resurfacing of this information created so much confusion around the world. At STEEZY, we are choosing to respect cultural roots and break the cycle of misinformation within dance by talking to the originals and their students. We hope this clears up our reasoning!

he started spelling it in a different way because of the negative connotation of the word "whacking" = to strike with force and also to avoid the sexual connotation from "to whack off"

@@starlight.genesis I'm not talking about this video, I've been watching battles for over 10years now, top waackers like Ibuki, Lip j, Yoon ji etc are waay technical than top krumpers like Tight Eyez or Ugly Fate... they dance with a lot of emotions, different emotions. And by "diffeent emotions" I mean Kurmpers always dance with this "anger" emotion, while Waackers dance with anger, sadness, joy etc.. it depends on the music. So I wasn't talking about the moves, if that was the case then Breaking would be the most difficult dance, because no one can do the powermoves bboy Kill or bboy Physicxx and those bboys do. That's just my opinion and I'm not tryna convince anyone here hh

It might be a "younger" type of dance but because it was only created over a decade ago but dance isn't considered dance after a certain period amount of time. It just looks different from dancer to dancer because each have their identity and are different from each other. The best way to learn styles is to attend intensive workshops about the style, not just simply copying and being ignorant of the correct way to do it.

@@daveibrahim1962 I am not saying it's not important to learn the foundation, I just disagree with how and where you should learn it. I loved seeing the krumpers do the whacking!!! They did so good! I know they're going to somehow be inspired to integrate this into their dancing and vice versa.

I'm literally just finished taking Salonga's beginner Krump class on Steezy and it was sooooooo satisfying I can't wait to learn more. I love this form of expression it feels like the perfect way for me to process my trauma like breaking out of a cage. I also have titanium rods down my spine from T1-L1 due to Scoliosis but since there's not that much movement in that area of the spine with Krump moves it's perfect for my body. Even the way krumpers hold that core steady it's almost protective of that area of the spine. Another fan commented somewhere below about how Krump can be spiritual and ecstatic when you go off and lose yourself in it and that that's the ancestors moving through you. I found this fascinating because I'm already a practitioner of specific type of ecstatic dance called 'Movement Medicine' which is based in shamanic knowledge, is freestyle but guided by a specific type of music and vocal prompts. After being inspired by Jaja's choreo to 'No olvidar' I noticed a krump movement from that dance pop out of me during a movement medicine session when the vocal prompt was to connect with my ancestors. Coincidence? I think they want me to Krump! :) Thanks Steezy for the awesome classes!
