Hello everyone! Thank you for the video. I would like to emulate the speaker set up as seen in this video, but I don't know how/where to start. Presently I have the following: 2 ADAM A7X monitors (left/right), a Presonus Audiobox USB (only has output for L/R speakers). Keyboard is Kawai MP8II. I'm hoping to add another pair of ADAM speakers to fill my studio - is this possible. Please advise. Thanks

It sounds quite good, but the characteristic Steinway tone will have arrived via sample library once someone figures out how to capture _both_ the yin and the yang: the bright, brash tone that VSL highlights and the soft, mellow tone that a library like Synthogy Ivory II has. Marry those together, somehow, and you have a nearly flawless product. Having tried the Steinway D-274, I can't get it to sound quite like I desire with the standard package, and I _really_ wish you could choose which mics to buy as opposed to being stuck with one or two that you'll never use. For now, I think VSL CFX sounds more like its acoustic counterpart, so I will probably stick to my own advice next time and get that instead of getting the full version of a library I already have. I suppose I could try the full library and return it if I don't like it, though.

@@zvelekva yes. Ultimately, what I recommend doing is, if you decide you're ready to try these, give the standard a try and make sure you like the general sound and feel of the piano. If you don't, you have 14 days to send VSL an email for your money back. If you like it but aren't satisfied, then get the full and use the same procedure. I highly recommend that you do _not_ trust the demos. I did for CFX, which was a mistake, because it seems like they have an EQ on the upper register in most, if not all of its demos. Almost all of them were unappealing to me for this reason. There's no better demo than trying it yourself. It's fun to mess around with the many knobs.

@@ViennaSymphonicLibrary I'm considering purchasing the VSL D-274, but I simply don't have the room to space out the speakers like you have in the video. I have zero experience with setting these things up and would need to know if it's truly a viable solution for me before I buy the full version. If I don't/can't set the speakers up as you have and I can only put 2 speakers about 1.5 meters in front of me (i.e. behind the keyboard), one to the left and one to the right spaced out max about 1.5-2 meters apart, how bad will the sound be? Will it affect the authenticity/quality of the sound to the point it becomes fake/digital sounding (eg. like the built in speakers on most digital pianos)? Also how will it affect the spatial impression - the psychoacoustic illusion that the sound is coming from a real piano in front of me? Thank you!

Hmm. Seems to be lacking the gentler end of the spectrum. I can also hear that big chords are not actually sounding "together" but ripping slightly, and I think the pianist here is clearly playing at a standard where this is not him that's doing the ripping - its the sample engine. I find Synthogy Ivory Steinway Model D (they call it the German D) way superior to this VSL instrument, which I own and have tried via a Yamaha Clavinova as a controller. The chords literally don't sound homogenous, and I really struggle to get soft stuff to sing. Unlike Synthogy which seems more musical somehow, and can sing when played soft. I went to Steinway in London recently and played on a few actual Model B, C and D instruments. Wow. You cannot imagine how far away from this reality ANY plugin is right now. I was so enraptured I found myself composing new ideas immediately. Totally mind blowing. In was there for HOURS. I believe the pianist here, in this video, is restraining his disappointment. I think the reason for the success (limited though it is) of the Synthogy engine is that is combines synthesis with sampling. The pedals works really well, for example, and resonate believably. Don't get me wrong, this is a great sampled piano. It's just that the bar is high - very high.

This is supposed to be one of the best, but, sadly, as evidenced by 0:20 and 1:05 sampled pianos still sound disjointed and fake when compared to the real deal.

Trust me, I'm sad about it. Of course, I would like the convenience of digital. I can and would be able to spot the difference: at this time, a real instrument is still very much more cohesive. I would be absolutely amazed if Stefan Mendl did not agree. Still sounds like a bunch of samples being triggered. Agreed, this is better than most. I also am impressed by the pioneering modelling going on at Modartt. Still sounds obviously fake, but actually as an instrument in its own right, it feels much more like a piano to play.

@@davidpringuer not many of us have a room in our house anything like a concert hall or the funds for a piano like this, trust me on this. Almost the same is the best we can hope for. You are fortunate to have access to the real piano. This is close enough for me.

@@MarkHopewell The same shortcomings are apparent: the clankiness of sound samples and the washiness of the added room reverb that can't be switched off completely. That's what I meant by this comment. Of course, in the timbre itselft, the difference is present, this VSL sounds brighter and cleaner in high frequences. But the aforementioned shortcomings of these libraries really make the matter of timbre quite negligeble.
@JPDC624
@JPDC624 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. The Garritan sounds perfect to my ears because I like Yamaha pianos and the room makes the difference, and Garritan was sampled at Studio 1 at Abbey Road. I'm not a big Synchron Stage A fan, it's harsh, but I guess it works for classical on a Steinway. HOWEVER, the 280VC that VSL sampled in Stage B, WHOAAAAAA, that is a library that I must get, perfect compliment to the Garritan. I would go listen to those demos.

@@sevchyk Not all microphones were demonstrated. There are close microphones that have absolutely no reverberation (if you have the full library). They did test one that, as was explained, is a close mic that is not completely close, but sounds more dry than wet at 4:40. But there are completely close mics, both condenser and ribbon, in all Synchron pianos. I don't think there's any other product in the market that has as many microphones recorded as these pianos, let alone the fact that they were recorded in the amazing Synchron room.
