Love it! This is reckless for some, but for someone with Stefan's experience, this is very much in his envelope of skills. I would certainly agree that very view should be this adventurous, but I'd sit backseat with Stefan for this one any day. Everyone's risk profile is different, but every pilot should (and not always the case) have the sensibility to not overshoot his/her ability and to error on the safe side.

They are brilliant engineering in efficiency. They simply use the speed coming down as energy to climb and the surfaces can be adjusted based on whether you need to climb, do stunts or want speed because of how light they are they ridiculously efficient with that energy. It looked like there was some wind so he probably could have climbed back up some distance with that energy as well without stalling.

Awesome. Didn't know gliders were in km/h in South Africa. But going low and fast in a glider seems totally exhilarating! I was always impressed by gliders doing a low and fast flyby along the runway, before doing another pattern and coming in to land, but this one beats it. I wonder if anyone has filmed it from the outside.

@@iamnima Since a large number of the most renowned glider manufacturers are from Germany, the default option in their gliders will be metric, but that is not generally true. What's the string on the glass used for? Visual live wind changes for landing?
@tissuepaper9962
@tissuepaper9962 5 ай бұрын
It's called a "telltale", "yaw string", or "slip string". It's used to make sure that you're in "coordinated flight" which essentially means that you're pointed in the direction that you're moving, especially when performing turns. If you're pointed too far into the turn (called "skid") or too far out of the turn (called "slip") you lose a lot of efficiency and won't be able to glide as long, and if you get really uncoordinated you can end up in a spin, which pretty much guarantees a fatal crash if you're flying at low altitude. There's a wikipedia article about coordinated flight, and another one specifically about yaw strings, both of which may enlighten you. Similar strings are used on sailboats to give a visual indication of the airflow over the sails, which allows the sailor to make the most efficient use of the wind.

@@thibuss2577 I think this glider has a total energy vario top right and a regular vario bottom right. The bottom one shows descent. Not sure if the bottom vario really is a regular one, but I would guess so since it looks like one and I don't assume there's two redundant total energy varios.
