I really enjoyed trying out the Stellar Trek by HumanWare. It's a standalone hand held device that's mainly for navigating with GPS. It has a lot of great features--and it has buttons! You can create landmarks and routes, find out what's around you with Points of Interests, use Map Browsing to navigate virtually offline, as well as additional tools like OCR, barcode scanner, color identifier and more.
Use code: CARRIE for $150 US or $200 CAD off!

My friend had a similar GPS before mobile phones were very ubiquitous. At that time we would adventure out, and because there were way less towers and satellites, she had a tiny satellite dish she would pin to the shoulder of her clothing that came with her system. She would have to download maps of towns she wanted it to contain, like here, and wherever conventions would be. We could explore more over the internet with it , back at her house, where there was a full key board with arrow keys. This was a thing I loved because I loved maps before and used to draw them, I continue to sometimes make tactile ones. Her's was only a map device though. We hauled so many devices and tools all the time, people always expected us to start carrying more, as though we were soldiers suited up for war, her dad said, was what we looked like with our giant backpacks and gear, marching down the street.

That's so funny. I have these images of huge umbrella like satellites on you y'alls shoulders. :D

@@carrieonaccessibility It felt like a tiny cocktail glass of plastic with a closed cocktail umbrella garnish sticking out of the center. Like if it were some kind of pop fashion brooch from Claire's or something. Like a tiny plastic martini glass.

Hi Carrie, Really really nice review. For me personally had they charged £500 to £600 I would have bought one. I just think that for the price it needs to be almost flawless, especially as I normally travel around with my sighted wife. Couldn't justify a grand and change on a device like that. I do think it is a good idea though and I think it would be useful to some.

Hi Ritz! Thanks so much for your comment. It is certainly on the expensive side. Like I mentioned in my video, I wouldn't really get it unless my lifestyle significantly changed and I travelled a lot more. Where I am, they don't believe in sidewalks and it would really just be more of a really expensive accessory if I were to get it, so I could not justify the purchase either! But it was definitely still a nice little device to play around with.

hello thank you for your long nice review on this device and your honest personal opinion, i understand now about the accuracy .. its not the device but the GPS system that decides how accurate it is. the price tag seems kinda steep i do like this technology is evolving some day soon there will be something i would rather spend money on. again thanks for your review , greets mak :)

First, thanks for the compliment! I understand totally about the price. I think that the only reason I would really get it is if I really travelled a lot. I just don't get out and could not justify spending that much for a device like this. LOL. I still enjoyed trying it out and think it is still a nice little device.

Surprisingly, it was a very good review! Unfortunately, as you indicated, this is not a good device for those of us who are somewhat sedentary. Also, the price is exorbitant, and I don’t think it’s worth paying the price for something you would barely use. However, I have to say that is a wonderful machine that many people would get a lot of use.

Well, I'm glad that the review was surprisingly good and it sounds like it surpassed your expectations! 🙂 Yes, ultimately my lifestyle would really have to change to make this worth it. And I think that's the same for a lot of people.

Hey, buttons are nice. They are very nice... and under appreciated!! And yes, it is a steep price. I would really need to be travelling to justify that emount for me.

It's not that they are underappreciated. It's that you have an obsession with them when most other people do not lol
