tbh i would like to switch back to android but it seems iOS is still miles ahead in terms of accessibility shame Samsung is to busy pushing out new features and don't even bother making sure everyone can use them.. say what you want about Apple but at least they think of everybody and make sure everything works. slow and steady wins the race..

I’m low vision as is my husband and I just bought a switch today (5/9/24) it’s the first “console” I’ve owned since WII. Hubby has owned a PlayStation 3. I’m not tech “dumb” but this is a new experience as I set up all the devices as my husbands vision loss is different then mine. I have glaucoma and he has star guardt’s.

Both the humanWare and zoomax Braille eReaders support a number of document file types, as well as Braille and Daisy book files. Despite the fact that neither brand has a notetaking app, you can either transfer documents and notes from the computer and read them in braille, or you could connect to a smart phone, tablet or computer as a braille display/keyboard and take notes that way.

Thanks Carrie for another interesting and informative video indterview. The technology looks very promising. I am pleased that the developers are involving the target audience in the development process in the way that they are. I am sure that is very challenging while providing many rewarding insights. My primary use case is unique in that my rural terrain is quite irregular. For many reasons they admit that their initial iterations of the product will probably not perform well in those situations. I understand the trade-off of not initially addressing the challenging requirements of a niche audience like mine. So I will just be watching their progress with interest, cheerring them from the sidelines and providing them feedback as long as they will listen to my peculiar objectives for a product of this sort.

He is targeting the older population of low vision and blind adults. This generation is also the ones that will not be able to pick up glide over and over to take it upstairs and over objects. I understand it's only 5 or 65 lbs, but it will get heavy and start to strain your hands. I think the release date has also been pussed back on this project. I am not sure. The app also has a monthly cost.
@carrieonaccessibility
@carrieonaccessibility 14 күн бұрын
Yes, you're right. I believe preorders are now officially up, too. Only time will tell if it is a successful product. I think it may be a bit more viable than some of the other mobility wearables out there, but we will just need to see....

Did I hear him correctly? Did he say affordable at $1,500? I feel like this always happens with assistive technology like this. I want to try it out but not at that price point.
@carrieonaccessibility
@carrieonaccessibility 15 күн бұрын
I hear you. I don't know. $1500 sounds much better than 3 or 4 thousand. But I just feel it has to work really, really well and have a lot more features and be very strong for me to pay that much. It's more of that value you get for the price than just the price. To be fair... you paid almost as much for Lindon's backpack... LOL. That's probably a better deal though. hahaha.
@ToughBeifong
@ToughBeifong 15 күн бұрын
@@carrieonaccessibility yeah, but to be honest I paid that price for way more than Linden's backpack and to me that was worth it. Paying $1,500 for something I'm not certain about, not so much lol

41:19 If you can't make the clicking sounds required for echolocation, how about using a device to do it for you?
@carrieonaccessibility
@carrieonaccessibility 15 күн бұрын
I find that many people who are low vision or visually impaired have less success with echolocation than those with less usable vision. Not always, but more vision can sometimes cloud the experience and make it more confusing. Not everyone can use echolocation to the extent or skill that others can. And it is not always the solution.

It is not that easy to pair. It took multiple attempts. The quick way is. Turn on and press and hold the play “O” for 5 seconds while Bluetooth is turned on in your phone settings. The written instructions are difficult to understand and I was in a hurry.
@carrieonaccessibility
@carrieonaccessibility 15 күн бұрын
I think it depends on your Android version as I got a pop up on my screen asking if I wanted to pair the device as soon as I turned on the headset. Also, it may be that I'm used to the LG headsets and that's how most of them pair- pressing and holding the power button. Sorry that I made it sound too easy! But I'm glad that you got it working.

It doesn’t look bad. I am not seeing impaired but I can not see that being a replacement for the cane. Maybe as some added security? Like it would help with things like branches on a path that are chest level But that’s a lot of money. Just wanted you to know that it’s not a bad looking device but I’m very skeptical on what it would actually be helping. Maybe they should offer free trails so you can see if it works for you before spending 3k
@carrieonaccessibility

Yes, it doesn't look as... different as other devices out there. However, there are other considerations for example.. can we wear it with a backpack? A purse? It's honestly a really expensive device for the limited use, but only time and trial will tell. :)

Surprisingly, it was a very good review! Unfortunately, as you indicated, this is not a good device for those of us who are somewhat sedentary. Also, the price is exorbitant, and I don’t think it’s worth paying the price for something you would barely use. However, I have to say that is a wonderful machine that many people would get a lot of use.

As someone who used to work at Starbucks and is still a fan as a customer, they have been trying to make things more inclusive for years. This isn’t a new thing they’re doing. I recall about 10 years ago, they remodeled all of the “hand off planes” (the area of the bar where you grab your coffee) to be an appropriate height for those who can’t reach 4 ft off the ground lol. That is also when they installed the digital menus with cameras so that baristas can sign to deaf customers at the drive thru. Now they’re all closing and remodeling again! I wonder what suggestions they’ve taken into account this time?
