The idea of entities like Gray in Stellaris is so promising. Multiform, incredibly powerful individual 'pieces,' so to speak, could be an interesting path to pursue for Martin and the Devs, putting means and methods of aquiring super powerful characters, Leviathan-like space units, swarm queen based self replenishing fleets, or something akin to space-based space marine chapters serving as super armies or mega debuffing units in fleet fights. As I tend to do of late, Gray seems to be analogous to Illwinter's Dominions high level summons who can annihilate or outlast entire armies, significantly boost production of important resources, or increase the overall potency of an empire. This could actually be a case where, in the future, the production of these super units using dangerous methods could prompt the colonization and fortification of backwater planets that won't destroy productive systems before rogue units are destroyed.

Ladies, gentlemen, hermaphrodites, hive minds, asexuals, and fellow sentient AI, place your bets on how long till he's nerfed, I'm giving him 3 Dev Diaries.. Edit: Added in Hive Minds.

I never realized how lucky my first game was. I knew nothing about Stellaris, had a insignificant fleet, terrible economy, and unfriendly neighbors. Then I, in early game opened the L Gate. Then, instead of being absolutely steamrolled by an endless stream of fleets as I now know is possible, I received Gray and conquered the Galaxy.

Yeah, gotten that event, and the whole "Mating rituals" things came off as even more bizarre as i was playing and old modded race of anthropomorphic foxes (Not the ingame ones) and the grey just happened to get the picture of a big chested vixen.

Didn't know he just ressurrects. I have had him at my side for the last 30 years of my empire and knowing this now I have used him way too carefully

Isn't what "Gray" describes that happend in the L-Cluster every possibility that can happen when we open the L-Cluster chronologically? Either we get what he said first, the Grey Tempest having wiped out their creators. Then we might get the Dessanu Confluence, what would basically be if the the L-Cluster would never have been opened during the "Grey Tempest" Age in there. And finally, what happens after the "Dessanu Confluence" Age, if it would have been left untouched in the Cluster, him. It's like he is the final stage of nanite "evolution". First, the "savage" Grey Tempest, then the "more civilized" Dessanu Confluence, and finally, him.

Can you with a democracy vote gray as your leader, and if so what does his special trait give your empire?

I like to imagine that in his ground unit form, he functions like the nano robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I feel like machine empires should get option to be assimilated to gray, and allowing you become the nanite empire

I love how there is shit like nanites from stargate, Zenomorphs and synthetics from alien, clone armies from star wars. Like there is so much shit thats been inspired from other scifi games and it makes the game so good

Could this guy help you actually survive and End of Cycle event? Now I'm really curious. Just turn him into a governer before it happens, then back into the big ass ship? He wouldn't do it on his own, but 30k+ is a huge boost to start back up with.

So Grey can transform at will at any time, or is it a one time/ few times choice? And is his sir-name Goo?

500% is high collateral damage, but when you consider how much more damage it deals (and thus how much shorter the combat will be), it's one of the lowest.

I remember playing back when there was a bug that ensured you’d always unleash the grey tempest if you opened the gate. I wasn’t strong enough to stop them at first, so my empire got fractured. Ended up being the only survivor as the Gray Tempest cut swathes through the galaxy, crushing all who couldn’t build their civ up fast enough.

Perfect timing! I just found him in my newest campaign. I did not know that he will come back if he dies, and I was afraid to send him anywhere (just like my precious amoeba), especially because my 3 other fleets are at around 60k, but if he comes back, it doesn't matter! Thanks ASpec!

Someone else opened the gates in my play through and I found grey randomly in the galaxy. He wasn’t in the l cluster, may have been all the extra event mods I have installed but it was just strange.

I got him fairly late in the game because there was only one L Gate and it was on the other side of the galaxy. I have very standardized fleets and don't like the one offs cluttering them, also I was playing very turtle as it was an RP run and didn't want him doing anything violent, so I made him a governor and didn't think about him again.

I GOT GRAY!!! My fourth game, and I've been using everything I've learned over the last three games and your videos. This time im running a militaristic fanatic spiritualist empire. Year is 2317, I have the first league ecumenopolis, mind over matter ascension perk, a decent tall-flex build (not great still a noob), AND NOW GRAY!!!! I can't contain my excitment!!!

In early 2.1 i believe there was a bugged mercenary ship you could get that disabled the fleet cap for the ships in that fleet.

All I got was an empire just outside the galaxy.........I purified them in holy fire.

so if you were able to get grey, also but are also going down the path of psionic ascension. and manage to roll into the the end of the cycle. when the cycle clock ticks over you loose everything, but can you get grey back after that event ticks over? that would be a interesting game to say the least.

This is the first L Gate cluster event game I got since the update. I was confused at first because I didn't notice the game had a update and count find anything mentioning it online till stumbling upon the dev diary. It was awesome though. But when he.turned into a battleship for me he clocked in at 47k fleet power. Is this because of empire bonuses or does he scale with time?

Wait a minute ... the game now has a working code for respawning a unit ... That means you can have OTHER hero-like ships and thus having a lot of modding options Looking foward to some mods that add the Enterprise as a respawning ship or the 501st as a respawning ground army.

Every time I've opened the L-Gates, I waited long enough to advance to where I could steamroll the Grey Tempest. I mean, corvette spam at the time, sure, but with so many fleets moving together (literally everything I had), I just made a beeline towards their "home" system in the cluster and wiped them out, avoiding over half their fleets in the meantime. Then the cluster is mine, and ho boy, fun times ahead for me, not so much for the rest of the galaxy.

Does any one know a way to get an idea to the modding community for this game? I was love to see a mod that adds special tech that revolves around the nanites for robot empires and give special ship types, stations, buildings, bonus’s and weapons and defenses...

HA! I only just got back into Stellaris and my first ever experience with the L-Cluster is getting Gray! 🤣 I went from being an empire of insignificance in the galaxy to being "aight lads, we're gonna be doing things my way from now on......"

First time ever I opened the L-gates was in mid to late game and got Grey immediately turned him into a ship

Can this ship be merged into other fleets? There is a robotic corvette you can find and repair, but it refuses to merge with other fleets. I also wonder how good is this battleship at soloing things like dimensional horror, etc.

The most badass and very usefull character in stellaris; gray can literally be anyone or anything! I never played stellaris before but after hearing this I wish I want to play it!

I found this on my current play, the very first time I went to the cluster and there was no info on this at all on the internet. I was super confused. But I didn't have any gates within my borders until very late, so by the time I got this, Gray would turn into a 56k power ship, about half the power of one of my fleets. So I made it a governor and now I'm swimming in resources. Btw I'm the guy who had trouble with the contingency before. No longer, I survived and thrived and the only real opposition to me now is an AW that went on a rampage. Past tense. Mop up operation at this point.

I got him as an devouring Swarm. Kinda funny

I opened it as early as I possibly could (everyone only had around 7-8K fleet power, including myself). It became a mad dash between me and 5 other systems to explore the L-Cluster (since I only had access to 1 gate, and others had access to another). I staked a claim at both ends of the entrance. Built the best space stations I could and began mass producing science ships and fleet ships, just in case things went badly. I got Grey. I claimed every planet in the L-Sector as well. The downside to Grey is that he's very easily destroyed since he's just a single giant ship which doesn't seem to have point defenses. You have to pair him with actual fleets and have him "snipe" to make him useful. If anyone targets him, you have to kill them quickly... or he dies quickly.

My God, well let's hope he isn't nerfed.

Just opened the gate at 2244 with a tech rush tall sprawl that would go wide at near max tech, blocking off a big chunk of the galaxy with some good ore worlds and 1 size 25 world that I was going to turn into an arcology and my new capital. Got all the L-cluster tech and was like...hehehe, fine, let's do this. Saved my game just before it finished opening and was planning to send the save to Aspec for his 'Save my Save' playthroughs saying "whoops, I think I made a mistake." Instead I got Gray and came here to find out what the hell I just got. Went from a pretty great start to redonkulous and now I don't know if I even want to keep playing. Like why even?

Had this event in my multiplayer game and have this ship save my ass in the war in heaven event 10/10
