I've been teaching for 13 years and my Teacher Ed program never spelled things out this clearly. This was a great refresher as I look ahead to next year.

I like how you talk about shifting activities to keep students engaged! In my practicum, I had a very rowdy grade 11 (!) class, and my supervisor advised changing what we were doing every five minutes. That sounded overwhelming at first, but it became second nature: now you're listening to me, now you're working on your own, now discussing with the group, sharing out, listening to me, working independently again, etc--keep them on their toes! (I ended up adoring that class, but it put me through the wringer.)

I really liked that you mentioned how most people fall in the middle in terms of how detailed their plans are. I know my classmates and I are often overwhelmed by how detailed our lesson plans have to be for the projects we do... and we aren't even student teachers yet! Its good to know that it becomes a bit more natural as time goes on, and also that one day we'll have a bit more say over our preferred planning methods. Thanks for making this!

That is why I am here! They showed us once on how to write a detailed lesson plan and I was never shown within Science. I am student teaching now, last quarter until I graduate and I am freaking out. My last mentor did NOT use lesson plans. I hope you are successful now that it is a year later!

It TOTALLY gets better over time-you're right! It becomes more natural as you go. We hustled so hard in college with creating these extremely intricate lesson plans. As crazy as it was at the time (also the panic attacks of "how could I possibly do this on a daily basis" lolll), it definitely trained me to be VERY efficient with making them (and developing a persona system over time). Loved this!! Always a good refresher :)

Wonderful job, Marie! This really helped me to see how I (don't) set up my lesson plans. I've been teaching for about 15 years and have never done this. I think that this is what I need to help me better structure my units and lessons. I'm usually full of ideas, and I want to do so much, but I end up getting lost in the process. If I could use a metaphor, it's as if I have all of the ingredients necessary for an awesome cake, but no instructions on how to piece it together properly, so I might end up getting a pancake or a muffin instead of a cake. I want the cake! My lack of executive functioning could well be the cause, but I'm hoping that these videos will help me to achieve my desired cake! Thank you :)

I love lesson planning. I am sort of closer to the super detailed planner, but not to the minute and definitely not scripted. I like the element of shifting from one activity to another. I was a Latin teacher for almost a decade, but currently, I am teaching ELA and Reading. Lesson planning for English classes is quite a bit different from what I had to do in Latin, so I appreciate the video.

Wish I had teachers like you for English! Don't teach at someone, aim for active learning. Sadly the tell approach is so much the norm. Exactly why I'm looking for ideas for creating better online business courses and bring the fun of learning back for adults too. Thanks a mil 🙏🏻❤️

This was such a lovely, succinct how to! I just returned to the 'classroom' from mat leave right after Spring Break...so the start of virtual learning. This was a 'quick and dirty' refresher for me and has me excited to be back teaching my students in real life! I'm very excited for your unit planning workshop, the link didn't work for me though :( Happy Summer!!

I am going into my internship next year. We're supposed to make 8-10 lesson plans for a unit plan, and I have to say, this has helped. I wasn't sure where to begin! I wanted to ask, do you outline on a calendar or anything that you will be doing on certain days?

I literally never use any of the lesson planning tools that I used in my credentialing courses. LOL. Daily lesson plans start with my objective from the day and then I decide what I'll have them do, and finally how I'll figure out if they understand what's going on. From there, I create a Google Slides Presentation for the day.

Where would be the best place for me to access your Unit Planning Workshop info? In the meantime, I did see that you have a video on unit planning, so I will head over to watch that next. Thank you for so many helpful videos!

Honestly, I feel like I need a script and a time stamp for every time I’m shifting their focus (from recap, to lecture/direct instruction, to independent work, to think-pair-sharing, to class discussion, back to independent work, to closure...). I’m so scared!

Came across this researching ideas to create better online courses and for ideas for make things more interactive. I have a group of interns, 17 - 22 and the are so happy to 'sit and listen' which is NOT learning argh! But after the last year of having all their lessons online, they sit there, good as gold in silence with mics off. I'm all for blended learning however, especially after the last 20 mths, has anyone discovered some better ways to create a more interactive and engaging learning experience online? Thanks in advance 🙏🏻

I love how you detailed this out, but I am wondering how you would adapt his lesson for distance learning? Obviously you cannot switch out papers between students with everyone working from their own homes. Thanks for the ideas. It has been a while since my days for learning for my education degree, but I don’t think it was ever explained this clearly.

One thing I do for distance learning is put this type of an assignment in a hyperdoc format using google slides and build in brain break slides where they get up and do something. Hopefully this gives you some idea!
