Step-by-Step Tutorial: Carburetor Cleaning Made Easy ( How A Carburetor Works )
In this video I'm going to show you the symptoms of a dirty carburetor, how a carburetor works, and finally how I clean a carburetor. Most of these small engine carburetors are all very similar to one another. Any small 4 stroke engine is going to have a carburetor similar to what I'm showing in this video. 2 stroke carburetors for things like chain saws and weed eaters are a little different that what I'm showing here, although the fundamental principles of how the carburetor works still applies to those as well.
Most of these issues with carburetors getting dirty and or plugged are related to poor quality ethanol fuel. The ethanol fuel can start to break down in a few months and cause the carburetors to become gummed up or plugged. When this happens the engine RPM will surge up and down until the choke is applied causing the RPM to stabilize. The only way to fix this condition is to clean the carburetor.
