Unscrewing stuck filters: There is a special tool, but usually using grippy rubber globes, like for washing up, does work. The problem is that if you press down with your fingers so you can exert torque, that same pressure makes the round ring ever so slightly elliptical, which makes it very difficult or impossible to unscrew. Edit: i am of course not denying the issue of filters sticking and material combination being an issue.

Thanks for the tip, that make sense.

Use rubber bands when filters stick, works better then those “tools” camera stores sell. Just need two one for the lens and the other for the filter. Works all the time the cost is minimal. I learned this tip from newspaper photographers.

Go gently backwards on the threads till it clicks then go forwards. Best way to not cross thread.

In a pinch, if you have a filter stuck on your lens press it against the flat sole of your cleanish shoe and twist. Sometimes a rubber band wrapped around it helps too.

Btw, if you have a ring that jambs easily try lubricating the threads on the rings with a light coat of teflon spray. Wipe off the excess.

I worked in camera stores for 27 years and in my experience you have less problems with filters sticking or the ring sticking to the lens. I've been out of sales for 21 years but I don't remember brass rings costing more than $15 back then. Inflation I guess, that and most stores make more money selling accessories at full price.

Hello, in your video, is your Benro ND filter is a brass ring? I am wondering if your video may suggest that aluminum ring on lens, or when stacking aluminum and brass ring may be troublesome scenarios. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Not your fault at all but I want to mention that Breakthrough rings are probably the best and that not having them in this comparison is leaving out a top-pick for lots of people.

Bower is a generic brand like Kalt and I think ithere was a brand called Proline too. Stores could make up their own brand and a whole line of accessories that customers couldn't comparison shop.

I used to own that lens and stepped up with the cheap Sensei ring to Tiffen variND, the vignette made it unusable at 16 to about 18mm, which kinda sucked, more the fault of the ND I guess. I had to use that filter tread clamp thing often to get it unstuck. Haha I also own a different Cavison step up ring, I use for clamping my matte box, not really for my filters, and it gets stuck too. Maybe I’m just over tightening.

When you can't use the original hood buy a generic in the step up size. Adds more junk to your bag but it works.

Interesting, can you point me in the direction of where to find one for this lens?

@@DaveDugdaleColorado This one is a toughie because of how wide it goes and it's a zoom. With longer zooms I used to use a variable rubber hood that folded so you could match the zoom focal length. I replaced all the hoods for my lenses with rubber ones. Why? They offered a bit more protection against banging or dropping the lens than the stiff metal or plastic ones, and the big plus is when you had to shoot through glass and needed to avoid reflections. With the rubber hoods you could angle the lens against the glass for better composition. On this Sony lens it might be easiest to just buy some spacer rings. It's been over 20 years since I managed a camera store but I seem to remember someone making spacer rings. I once used a 2nd step-up ring for a makeshift hood for an 11mm. I remember seeing someone make a hood from a cut down tin can glued to a step-up ring. They sprayed it with flat black paint and it looked pretty decent. For that matter take a rubber hood and cut it down to work. In this case you could try buying a generic petal hood to see if it works and if it's too long file it down to work with the 16mm end of the zoom. Lok for a plastic hood to make sanding it down easier. BTW, I recently bought a set of step-up/step-down rings on Amazon for cheap. For some strange reason there's no 58mm. Hey Doug, I think you need to test the ones supplied by Breakthrough out of San Francisco. I have had step up rings seize on my constantly. These rings are the only ones I have yet to seize on me and they are nice and robust.

I Dave love your videos, I’ve got a question is there a technical or economic reasons for PolarPro to make their step up rings in BRASS and VND Filters in aluminum because at one point or another you’re going to use the filters directly on your lenses it doesn’t make sense to me . Thanks in advance.JC
