On June 14, Stephen Colbert, host of CBS' "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," returned to the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater to face a live audience, something he had not done in 460 days due to COVID restrictions. CBS News' John Dickerson attended that return taping, and talked with Colbert about what it means to perform comedy with (or without) a live audience. He also spoke with Evie Colbert, who during the pandemic became her husband's live audience of one.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

In order to be happy over time, you have to strive toward something better for yourself, relationship, job, health, etc. It helps to have something from which you model your wishes. Because I had FAILED to make it to see The Colbert Report, the incarnation of his character that was absolutely brilliant. I knew that his move to the top, entering mainstream network tv was going to come at a huge artistic cost. Well more than half a decade in, I'm glad that the impact has been much less than I had feared. It was Trump who pushed him back out to the edge, and that's what got him to blow the doors off the Jimmy's. Bold. And well earned success. Maintaining enough integrity to keep Jon Stewart proud as the father who raised this crop of latenight mastery. Spawning at least half a dozen hosts who got their own show. Absolutely nothing like this phenomenon in the entire history of tv.

@@bestproto5117: "He spent the last four years deviding the nation with hatred and bigotry conspiracy theories..." There's no question that the last set of years has been filled with intent to divide the nation with hatred and bigotry. The difference btwn your and my perspective is that you see Colbert as the cause, whereas I see him as the cure. No need to hold any debate here. This week is the start of the Indictment Floodgates opening. 2021 is the Year of Reckoning for a multitude of crimes where accountability has long been evaded. The COURTS will soon bring clarity to exactly where and who has been at the crux of the severe problems. Back in the early 70s, Nixon still had many supporters. As the facts were brought into the light of day, the supporters quickly dwindled in magnitude. The same is happening right now. Except the big difference is that Nixon's crimes are TRIVIAL by comparison.

I agree. I love Colbert but I liked the pandemic format more. I enjoyed hearing his cameraman/sound guys laugh lol

@@SouthwesternEagle I get that, but he did such a great job that certainly he can acknowledge how much so many of us preferred the pandemic version.

I was so in love with David Letterman, and still are or is it still am, that it was very difficult to get used to Stephen Colbert it took weeks. I don’t have cable TV so I really didn’t know him from a hole in the wall. And I loved Paul ShafferIn the world’s most dangerous band they later had to change their name I’m not sure what it is. It was really difficult to get used to the Jon Batiste and stay human. I knew Paul’s music, but I did not know Jon’s music, it kind of had a Louisiana taste to it a Louisiana rhythm to it. But fast forward, John Baptiste left Stephen Colbert show and it was like losing a friend. Life can be weird sometimes. 😮😊❤

The lockdown shows felt more genuine and personal. The constant clapping and cheering by crowd is kinda nauseating and indicative of US demagoguery

Why won’t they interview James on the late late show cuz the audience def does not make that show. The crew does

Comedians need an audience for energetic, human, spur if the moment feedback. They need to know how their jokes are landing. For Colbert to have Evie has been a boon for him. I'm betting this has been super difficult for all the late night hosts. All of them have maintained their audiences, but they would all prefer to have the audience.

Corden sucks. Seth Meyers for the win.

Think about this…the guy was the best late-night host and the best political satirist and commentator in the nation BEFORE Covid. Then he managed to build even more of an audience during quarantine. The guy is immensely talented and impressive. I LOVE that he stuck the South Carolina sticker on his mark. How cool is that? If I were in his position I’d do the same. Have a sticker of Oklahoma. To remind me who I am and where I came from.

He’s truly a genuinely cool dude. He speaks the truth, made fun of Trump and his looney Cabinet and Party which was always the best. He definitely kept me entertained during the pandemic!
