Less than two hours by bus or train from Budapest in the heart of Hungary’s wine country, the small city of Eger is the perfect place to step into the country's heartland.
Steeped in history and with a medieval castle on the hill above it, Eger is a lively university town with a lot going for it, including a thriving Old Town, a fortress, a terrific town square, lots of restaurants and wine cellars and even an Islamic minaret left from Ottoman rule in the 1600s.
As you’ll see from the video, Eger will be memorable to me for another reason: I’m staying at a charming 12-room inn that during almost the entire time there was devoid of guests and staff.
