I wanted there to be something more substantial out there than just "lift one arm and see what happens".
This is by no means the be-all end-all of one arm handstand work, I am just brushing upon the subject.
Anyone truly interested in achieving this skill will find it takes a lot of work, research, patience, dedication, playing/tinkering, and good old fashioned repetition.
It is much more of a journey than just achieving a skill and anyone going into this with the mentality of wanting to learn a party trick will not get far.
Keep in mind you don't have to be a gymnast or circus acrobat to learn this skill. You do however have to be willing to put the work in.
With that said, I hope a few people will find this helpful.

I started at around 18 years old, but I had no real teachers, facilities or resources for quite a while. Hand Balance is very work intensive compared to a lot of other disciplines. To really make progress you should be training a minimum of 5 days a week. As long as you are training safely there is really no such thing as too much. Professional hand balancers can train up to 8 hours a day in circus school. It takes those hours to really master the discipline.

Hi Yuri! Great video! Quite impressive. I was curious how late you started, as I am currently very interested in hand balancing as well as other strength/gymnastic feats and starting quite late myself. I'm 31 and have built up my handstand a lot over the last year but still no where near what you are able to do. A couple questions i keep wondering is, how often do successful people train these positions/skill (can you do it too much?) and is it better to focus on just one skill at a time?

I'm not saying you should train those kind of hours(I understand some of us have lives) but once you get to a more advanced level for handstands a higher training volume is necessary to build the skill. It is also a discipline that you can lose fairly fast through lack of practice. Balance is all about precisely detecting and reacting to subtle changes in your body position and alignment.

I have an article on my website that talks a bit about the required and recommended prereqs for OAH, but basically you need to be super solid and consistent on two arms in a variety of ways, ideally to the point where it takes little to no conscious effort to maintain balance

Yuri, do you recommend doing the weight shifts stomach to wall or back to wall so that in case you lose balance you can use the wall to stay up? Or do you think that if you have to use the wall to stay up you are nowhere near ready to do weight shifts haha.. I have one minute handstand, but I am having trouble shifting my weight properly to start with. Thanks!

stomach to the wall for weight shifts. Take balance out of the equation when you work on shifting, then once you are proficient, apply the feeling to your freestanding handstand. There is no black and white answer for your question as the wall can be a useful tool for anyone of any level, however, if you are working one arm balance you should not be using the wall as a crutch

Hi, Yuri. I cannot convey how beautiful this video is. The soundtrack is perfect and your skills are mesmerising. I need some advice; I have posterior pelvic tilt which causes my handstand to fall into a 'banana' shape very easily, and it's incredibly difficult for me to maintain a straight handstand. Do you know of anything to combat that problem? My wrists also don't seem to like handstands and pain is common. Should I stretch/strengthen them, or just take it slow until they get stronger? Thank you.

@nmccreight
@nmccreight 9 жыл бұрын
Phaneron (Caveat: this is just my understanding from my limited experience, I am by no means an expert) Stretching wrists all the time is key, but you can also try blocks or parallettes (both of which will take pressure off your wrist). In my experience if you understand that you have a posterior pelvic tilt, try to focus on tilting it anteriorly. If you can't maintain balance while attempting that, then it likely a shoulder mobility issue. If your lats and pec minor are too tight then you won't be able to extend fully through the upper traps (the more you anteriorly tilt your pelvis, the more your shoulders need to be extended). Also make sure you're looking directly between your hands, not in front of them like many people do (this will automatically have the tendency to banana you). If you have trouble actually moving your pelvis into an anterior tilt then you need to strengthen your deep abdominal muscles by practicing a variety of hollow holds

Noah McCreight Thanks for the advice. I bought paralletes recently. I tend to keep my head in a hanging position rather than looking at the floor (capoeira-style). I saw a chiropractor and the problem seemed to be that my L1 was causing nerve problems which prevented my hip flexors from activating properly. My flips and handstands have improved greatly since then.
@nmccreight
@nmccreight 9 жыл бұрын
Phaneron That would definitely be an issue then, I hope it works itself out! There's nothing wrong with a capoeira head position, if it feels natural then go for it. Personally I find it a bit hard to balance that way, but I've never really spent any considerable time getting comfortable like that anyway

Hey Yuri, thanks for your great work. Making good progress here. One Question: You keep your toes pointed. I somehow have the habbit of tucking my feet (my toes point towards the ground). Do you think I should change that? Do you point your toes for a reason?
@yurimar
@yurimar 10 жыл бұрын
Pointing your toes not only make the aesthetic look better, but it helps you maintain awareness of where your feet are in space. In addition, you are more likely to have locked knees and tighter hips if you point, and this will also help with aesthetics and balance. Definitely point your toes
@keithbearne5899
@keithbearne5899 10 жыл бұрын
I flex my feet because most of my handstand work is done in shoes and i think it looks better. I find pointed toes, or flexed feet has the same effect on the rest of the legs, so maybe do whichever you like aesthetically.

hi Yuri! a question, is flexibility so important? should I focus on my flexibility first? or can I start right off? thx in advance, awesome video!
@yurimar
@yurimar 7 жыл бұрын
flexibility is important, and as your level advances not having it can hold back some possible skills or techniques. that being said, lots of people get along just fine with shit flex by compensating in other areas. this is only one attribute, and there is a lot more going on here than that. You can start your practice without having good flexibility of course, but it is something that should be developed and not neglected

+Yuri Marmerstein My problem is flexibility, I can do a perfect form handstand and 15 perfect form handstand pushups but I am so stiff I can not press to handstand without bending my arms cause I cannot spread my legs enough. I have a knee injury and stretching my legs is not an option sadly... so I will keep trying to get the one arm handstand with the legs pretty high which is a lot harder and more frustrating. Hmmmmmm

Yuri Marmerstein Thank you for the answer! If you don't mind I have another question: is the muscle-up bad for the arms? I get pain next to my elbows while doing a good form muscle-up, I do extensive warmup, everything is fine but as soon as I do two or three muscle ups it hurts next to my elbows. Slow negative muscle-ups don't give me that problem, only the normal ones. Thx man!
