She called you the golden child because, when you first showed up in her life and she decided to bully you, she was told no. Every time she tried to hit you with another bit of disdain her father sided with you. This progressively went on for years and just further cemented in her head that you were the "golden child", as opposed to the actual reason that she was being a canoe of a certain type of feminine hygiene impliment and alienating her family by her own actions. It was a self-replicating prophecy, damn near a Shakespearian tragedy because the downfall was obvious to everyone but herself.

Yeah, the people on reddit saying that OP is the golden child are utterly absurd, or incapable of reading comprehension. If anything Melissa made OP the "golden child" by making herself insufferable and impossible to with the business. It's not that the parents ever favored OP, it's just that OP was the only daughter left after Melissa through her nasty actions effectively removed herself from the family. Had Melissa been allowed to inherit the family business she would almost certainly either have run it into the ground or turned around and sold it to live a life of luxury until she ran out of money.

It's overcompensation combined with what I like to call "Sherlock Holmes syndrom". Usually, people on reddit tends to forget we only have one point of view for those stories, but sometime the opposite happen, they get way too acutely aware of that and overcompensate by mzking tons of assumptions about what the OP may be oblivious to, leaving out of the story or even straight up lying about. Sherlock Holmes sydrom is that tendancy to try and find that one tiny detail that may change the whole story, making crazy assumption based around that one detail and then thinking this is the good way to deduce the "real" story.

If I had to guess.... She had genuinely improved after being sent away and got the help she needed to get onto a better path in life, and Greg acted as a catalyst to bring out all of her old bad habits that she thought she had quit. The post cards, I won't make a claim either way whether they were genuine attempts to apologize or gloating. I'm leaning towards gloating, but it's not impossible that she simply lacks social awareness enough to not see how that would come across. As someone else stated, her belief that OP was the golden child was a self-fulfilling prophecy; she bullied her, got reprimanded, and this fueled her belief that her parents preferred the bullied child, making her hate OP more, so she'd bully her and get reprimanded, and that would fuel her belief etc. And Greg is honestly just a trash person whose real self was waiting to come out like a time bomb after the marriage was secured. It would not surprise me if he was hoping Melissa would inherit the business so he'd have a rich wife to do all the work. I feel bad for Melissa, but she did 100% make her own bed and must now lie in it. She chose to revert back to old habits and these are the consequences.

Feels nice to see a story where the bully (maybe sociopath) of a sibling isn’t turned a blind eye by the parental figures. Usually, they let that nonsense slide, blame the victim (even believing any accusations from the bully, without hearing the victim out), and then disown said victim when they decide to not help them in the future. What a breath of fresh air.

It kinda is tho, instead of trying to actual parent the sister they send her away to a rehabilitation center, most of which are actually pretty bad places. Then you have to wonder why was she acting out and rebeling in the first place? Usually that's a sign of either Overstreet parents or neglect, most kids don't just act out because they are bad, but it's the only way they get attention

@@jacobyflower3344So basically, let Melissa stay and get no help and continue to let OP be her victim cause her feeling of validation is more important than OP's safety and health. Basically, let one child suffer bullying to cater to the other. Gee, I'm sure there has never been a case where this has ended badly and one of them murdered if not severely hurt. Also, Melissa cheating with OP's fiance didn't happen when she was a child. She was already a fucking adult who should have had more mental maturity to handle it better. Thing is, if the dad took her back, her personality would have just gotten worse thinking that she can get away with everything as long as she acted pitiful enough. She has to become a better person first. She has to learn that this is the consequence of her action. If she didnt tried to trash OP by trying to show her parents how heartless OP was, she might have gotten a better chance at asking for help. Part of parenting is making sure they learn, you cannot enable them or they will hurt other people. Also, stepsister is an adult now. As an adult, you dont get the unconditional love and care from your parents. Especially if you treated them horribly. Youre only entitled to that as a child. No matter how horrible a child, you gotta take care of them. But as an adult, its no longer a parents job to take care and love them. People need to stop acting like theyre entitled to their parents care and affection when they treat them horribly.

I used to be a bad kid and I thought my sister was a golden child when I told my parents this my dad sat me down and said we don’t have to yell at her or deal with her as much but that doesn’t mean we love you any less. They then showed me that my sports and my therapy and my ADHD medicine cost so much more than anything my sister is getting in that’s why it seemed to me like she is the golden child when in reality the reason my parents had nicer memories with her was because the memories I had with them with them having to get me in trouble because I was a menace to society now I have fixed my behavior and I have noticed that they treat me and my sister almost completely equal. You cannot say that someone is a golden child if they genuinely act better than you and you are genuinely a troublesome kid, because you of course will have more bad experience with your parents because you will have more discipline with your parents absolutely wild that anyone believes that was her sister was just a dirt child

OP wasn't even the golden child. She got everything from her stepfather and mother because A.) Her stepsister was a literal bully, B.) She only used OP to get to her previous lover, C.) She did everything in her power to torment OP, and D.) Stepfather taught her everything that she needed to know about the business and what goes into it all while stepsister took off and was gone for a long time which she did everything to herself. OP succeeded in life while stepsister became a literal failure, a delinquent, and a potential criminal with the path she and her friends had gone down. Not once was OP the golden child in any of this because her stepsister really was an evil momster that got what she deserved because karma kicked her teeth in finally for all of the things she did in life and it was finally catching back up to her. OP had became successful and is honestly the one that deserves a happy life after going through so much torment in life. Though I can understand why the delinquent would believe that OP was the golden child. It's just stupid that the stepsister had not even bothered to reflect on her own actions. Well now she can do that with her husband and live a life that she had delivered her own punishment to her own self. I hope the delinquent and Greg both end up reaping what they had sowed for themselves because they were both dumb for thinking that maybe this life was going to actually be great before the realization that karma was going to get back at both of them. Serves the stepsister right for messing up a gkod person who had done nothing, but tried to be a good sister to her. Well now they get to spend their lives together living in poverty eithout any form of support since both of them had become literal embarrassments of their families.

Melissa probably found out dad retired and was hoping to get her foot into the business door in the hopes she can take it over. She probably thought she could talk dad into giving her at least half of it.

@jaywoofit

Exactly, you become a 'golden child' by being a good child when you have good parents. Melissa was just horrible and didn't like that her parents didn't let her bully her sister to make herself feel better about herself which made her resent her sister even more. Hope this is a wake up call for her to act better and honestly good on OP for ditching the toxic mess, I hope she finds someone who actually does love her instead of Greg who I bet is cheating on Melissa too. I'd actually bet money that Melissa told him she was pregnant and that is what got him to leave OP.

Being a golden child is by definition a reflection of parental bias. There was no parental bias and no golden child in this case. It was just a story the stepsister had invented to justify her envy, malice, and bullying.

What kind of person would agree that she was the golden child?? Everything the sister did was of her own doing. It also wouldn't have been a good idea to hire the guy because that would bring on other problems. So this woman just doesn't want to accept the consequences of her actions.

I feel like people jump to conclusions when the word "Golden Child" shows up and thats why a lot of people told OP she was TA. Step-sister is using that word to trigger people and make people side with her and it works.

My Dad has always told me "you have to be present to win." Meaning that you have to show up and actually be there, participate, and contribute towards what it is that you're striving for. Seeing that she decided to be like a rat, steal your fiance, and run away with him, she essentially disqualified herself from any of this business stuff. She spoke that with her absence. She dug her own grave, now she has to lay in it.

Why is it in these stories people come to California? This state has been a burning trash heap for years and the only way you can even make a living is by already having money and having a degree in a something that pays a lot. Even then that will barely help you make a living.
@AzraelThanatos
@AzraelThanatos 2 ай бұрын
A lot of it is because it's a big city, and a lot of the people are more east coast or midwest, plus you still have a lot of things from even the relatively near past where California is where you want to go to...even if it's a trashfire in reality.

Every one telling OP was the golden child must jave a scree loose. She had to endure the bullying for years and both parents weren't much of a help. The father only really did something about it when his child was brought back by the police and then decided what was best for his daughter. It only was a coincidence that it also was positive for OP.

Those troubled teen camps are rife with abuse and cruelty. Not in any way justifying the stepsister's behavior, but I don't think the parents made the right choice to send her to one of those. But really, what else could they have done? We don't really have good options for situations like this in the US (if that's where this occurred). We basically just fast track troubled teens into the prison system here.
@Yellowbeing08

It wasnt a "troubled teen camp" it was a rehab for teens, which is very different, it just works on stopping their addiction as young kids, if it was one of those camps, I don't think she could go to a school or live with her aunt

Some of them are, some of them aren't...Melissa seemed like the completely out of control type that pushed the parents into it to try to get her to something relatively approaching normal behavior... My high school's band/choir had a few yearly stops at one of the facilities of troubled kids (I got dragged along because I was one of the few people who worked with the sound system stuff, and could get pulled for it easily enough), and my uncle worked at a state facility that was a step below juvie for a while. Several of them are more of a boarding school setup there to deal with problems in order to get them away from problem influences and to a place where they wouldn't have suppliers for drugs/alcohol for a year or so...

This is what my parents would tell me if I felt guilty for someone who screwed me over. Those who called OP the golden child don’t realize that this entire situation was not OP’s fault. It was all Melissa’s own doing. If she had just swallowed her pride, and turned a new leaf, she would’ve not only gotten the business she was supposed to inherit, but also become a better person. As for Greg, man, I bet he regrets running away with Melissa after all this happened. Even though I’m a kind person, my parents and other people would tell me how I shouldn’t feel bad for people like Greg and Melissa. It’s all their fault. Edit - Forgot to say, OP is DEFINITELY NTA.
