I had the honour of being able to DJ my grandads 70th birthday party and this was one of the requested songs to be played that night. He lived until he was 83 and died in 2018 but every time I hear this song, it takes me back to that night. Was such a lovely celebration for his birthday and times were just so much more simple back then. Miss you my old mate, until we meet again. Love you always. X

MegaSnippezz Well 'The Office' featured Rod Stewart's version of this song. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant said they wanted something distinctively British and melancholy for the series theme tune. And all great comedies tend to feature moments of sadness and melancholy at some point within the show itself, and 'The Office' is no exception to this.

This has to be one of my all time favourite songs and seems to relate to my generation a little too well :(

The saddest part of the song is that you only understand it well when you have matured: no matter how much time passes, the older people will always sing this song to the young. A cautionary advice of timeless nature, indeed.

Zero dislikes. Never seen that before. Not that it deserves any. Perhaps there is hope for the world....... Great song/version. Made my day. Thank you.

When I was in high school I chose this song to play in our class -- everyone had to choose a song at some point -- It was an odd choice and I don't know how I found out about Stereophonics at the time (I'm Scandinavian) (I know this song isn't an original of theirs now) -- I remember feeling so embarrassed and uncool when this was playing -- I would find excuses and play down my choice when asked -- saying things like I picked a song at random from somewhere -- I've always been extremely shy -- Looking back I think my embarrassment was mostly all in my head, feeling insecure for "showing the world" something I liked (a part of me exposed, I guess), I think many people in the class liked the song or at least didn't mind -- someone asked me on social media a year later what song I played during that class (before Facebook or Twitter was a thing) -- If only I would have had the courage to appreciate things that I liked in public, or at the least not lie or pretend I didn't, I think that would've been better somehow

We all went through insecurities when younger, finding our way, doing our own thing takes courage...courage to stand apart from the crowd, but still stay within the crowd. Age allows that courage to grow, along with confidence and self esteem we find our way and stand up for what we believe, think, like and dislike.....it's the coming of age that is a turning point in our continued growth. You did well, have excellent taste and mustn't look down on yourself.

When I was young I liked Black Sabbath which was so unfashionable at the time , 50 yrs later Sabbath are still doing fine . I like lots of music I can go from Slayer to the Stereophonics , or Sabbath to the Detroit Spinners. Love your music it will pick you up and be there for you in even your darkest hours . Be proud of what you listen to and enjoy , its you ! Stereophonics are a great band Live long and listen from UK

Ever seen a blind man cross the road Trying to make the other side Ever seen a young girl growing old Trying to make herself a bride So what becomes of you my love When they have finally stripped you of The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old Granddad had to sweat to buy you Once I was a young man All I thought I had to do was smile While you are still a young girl And you bought everything in style So once you think you're in you're out 'Cause you don't mean a single thing without The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old Granddad had to sweat to buy you Sing a song of six-pence for your sake And drink a bottle full of rye Four and twenty blackbirds in a cake And bake them all in a pie They told me you missed school today So what I suggest you just throw them all away The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old Granddad had to sweat to buy you They told me you missed school today So I suggest you just throw them all away The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old Granddad had to sweat to buy you
