Lyrics:
I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned, I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon, hey yeah!
Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

This song is amazing because it reminds me of a beautiful wife I had for 30 years and then lose her to cancer. She convinced me we could build a house on the west coast of Scotland and held my hand as I was scared of it and then held my hand again in starting our business as I was petrified convincing me we could do it. The words are so true and the greatest love of my life will always be in my heart.

Sad about Karl Wallinger. I saw him at the Great American Hall in SF, probably last performance in SF. Beautiful, beautiful music maker. Glad that he had some more time after his health crisis years ago. Kinda like Steve Goodman. We have them as long as we do, then we have their recorded music and videos.

This could be about my missus. She had a terrible adolescence of sexual abuse, heroin addiction, exploitation, you name it. She was beautiful- I mean etherially, dizzyingly beautiful- charismatic, but above all, she had a prescience, an awareness, an intelligence that was properly unnerving. She had truly reached too high, too far and too soon, and tragically she was damaged beyond repair. I miss you every minute of every day, Emma. Xxxx

Found this song soon after I got my CT scan reports, I was so afraid and even cried after a long long time in front of my mother, I was having the worst possible thoughts and was expecting the worst. I almost collapsed when I read the last line said that everything was clear, I’m never going to take anything for granted again. I see this as a second chance to live and I’m aware that not everyone gets it so I’m going to try my best to make everyone happy. Remember that life is far more important than what you are trying to make of it. Take care!

Ditto. All I can say is, thank God for a little-known, low-power radio station just outside of Annapolis, MD, called "WHFS". They played music like this all day long. I discovered them late one Sunday night on a cold winter's evening and was amazed. "HFS" was so low-powered when I discovered them that you could only pick them up late on Sunday night's for some reason. I would make it a point to stop whatever I was doing around 11PM on Sunday's and dial them in, listening intently, almost desperately, for the faint signal that, for me, represented salvation, hope and rescue. It was as if a window, long closed, shuttered and curtained, had been opened just a crack, to give me and only me a precious glimpse into a wonderously kaleidoscopic world of vibrant colors, feelings, emotions and, above all else, LOVE!!!! In time, HFS boosted up its power to where it could be heard like any other station in the DC area, and the secret was out. But still they played great music for many years until they eventually went commercial and the pop lineup took over. Until then, HFS was the secret handshake amongst kindred spirits. If you heard the station's call letters or one of the DJ's names mentioned in a conversation, you knew you were speaking with someone who was COOL!!!

The lyrics of "The Whole of the Moon" are a poetic ode to vision, ambition, and the stark contrasts between the two perspectives. While the speaker is confined to limited visions and hesitant attempts, the other person-addressed throughout the song-sees the grander picture, embraces life's opportunities, and reaches for the metaphoric stars. The repeated imagery of seeing only the crescent versus the whole moon encapsulates this contrast. The other's ability to see "the whole of the moon" represents a transcendent understanding, unbounded aspiration, and clarity that cuts through lies. Vivid images like unicorns, cannonballs, palaces, and vast oceans add to the dreamlike quality, painting a landscape where dreams are pursued unabatedly. There's a sense of admiration, perhaps even envy, in the speaker's voice, acknowledging a kind of brilliance and audacity that they lack. The song, both wistful and inspiring at once, is an anthem to those who dare to dream big, see beyond the ordinary, and are unafraid to reach "too high, too far, too soon."

I've always loved this song & the story the lyrics are telling, which I am guessing is about two friends, one gained a lot out of life whilst the other friend is lamenting & regretting about 'playing it safe', or he was just plain unlucky not to have the same kind of success that his friend enjoyed. I think Mohammed Ali once said something to the effect of "Those who don't take risks will never accomplish anything in life".

God I was so young when I discovered this song in a small Nebraska town where no one else did, would, or could. It was then and there I knew I didn't belong. I never regretted all the unimaginable adventures that came next. I dreamed. I loved, I wronged, and I cried, and from those tears I was that small town boy again. Lost and dreaming, sad and reaching for that moon, the whole of the moon with enough memories to remind me that I lived, and all I loved, was a dream inside of a world I never could have imagined. Thank you Waterboys. You gave me a life. I am old now. And it's time to go soon. Play this song, and think of me when I'm gone.

For my Brother. Happy heavenly Birthday. He got me into The Waterboys early 80s. ❤

Wow, so sorry for the lost. I am too late to comment here, it's been a busy time for me lately. Nice song! The Waterboys are legends. I have been a faithful fan of The Waterboys since I heard their voice and I noticed you are a regular visitor to their KZfaq Channel too, which is good. How long have you been a fan of The waterboys?

Another Awesome 80's alternative song that just makes you feel good, remembering how things were just good and people were happy in the 80's and the music was our strength, gets me through todays world 😊

Was a brilliant song when it came out and still is to this day. Far surpasses anything anyone is doing in this day and age.

🕊️Karl Wallinger🕊️ 🎼❤ Fly Free ❤🎹 From the lyrics to Mike Scott’s vocals and the gaiety of your keyboard playing “The Whole Of The Moon” Although a little ditty of deep and introspective insight 🎵 it made my heart dance and my eyes water. Thank you ❤ Music a blessing ❤to us all❤

Came here from a BBC article after a man deal with a car crash 10 years ago and this song gave him six flashbacks that unlocked his memory that was wiped out after the accident and i was crying while reading his story 😭
