similar to the Bonham Triplets, i really like Steve’s snare work on Captain’s Journey by Lee Ritenour, continuous smooth doubles, and his linear use of his hi hat foot in his fills, like Chucke’s In Love, great lesson 👍

Glad you covered this. I always led with my hands but after looking at Gadd again and also the Aja transcription, there it was. It’s been really hard trying to reprogram my brain around this. I can do it better away from the drums by just using my hands and foot, but once I hear myself on the set, my brain twists it around again. It’s the power of displacement that can change your perspective of a pattern.

Exactly Clay... Its seems simpler but actually when you try to play it on the kit for some reason it seems to mess with your head... So practice with a click much slower and slam the kick...then in a few days it starts to be second nature.

Great insights! Nice playing as well. My advice to anyone who wants to harness Steve's sound is NOT to learn his licks. I would advise learning various old school military snare marches (like "Crazy Army"). Also it's a must to get your plans in order! Old Wilcoxon solos like "Swinging Accents" help a bunch
