Steve is the sweetest guitar hero you'll ever meet. I emailed him one Christmas day because I was feeling down. He wrote back that same day. We wrote back and forth and Steve wound up buying my horror novel at Amzn, then wrote to tell me about it. Who other world-famous musician would do that for just a fan?

Steve interviews really well and is quite spontaneous with his opinions and his thoughts looking back at his career. He comes over as a genuine bloke and this is a great example of his interest not so much in answering questions as having a conversation. It's an absolute joy, thanks so much to you both.

Agree with your comment 100%. I was going to say the same thing. This didn't sound like an interview, more I was listening to two friends having s very relaxed chat. And a damn fascinating one at that! Steve asking Barry for his thoughts was a moment that showed what a genuine and decent guy Steve is.

I suppose he could - but his fingers still work well on the guitar and while he can play, it's great to see him play. Loved the Foxtrot at 50 set. He really has still got it and the band is excellent basically. His keyboardist / musical director type producer is ace. The music just flows out of that group.

Steve is a legend. Once he left the band I thought they gradually spiralled downwards in terms of vision, imagination and creativity. Pop boredom and megabucks beckoned.

I'm so glad we have Steve. He is so candid.. he comes across as a fellow fan. Nice to hear all the history that he witnessed. And he still rocks!, just saw Foxtrot at 50 in Los Angeles. I guess his career is a bit like his playing: incredible sustain and emotion 🙂

A remix of Nursery Cryme would be interesting but personally I find the original production actually enhances the atmosphere of the music, giving it an Edwardian/gothic feel that adds a certain level of mysteriousness of the whole album.

What an outstanding and prolific body of work Mr. Hackett has produced over the years. Yes, revisiting the classic Genesis material with his fresh and tasteful reimagining approach puts more bums in the concert seats, however his solo work is extremely diverse and always of top notch quality: the prog rock albums, his jazz fusion work with Djabe and others, the countless collaborations with C. Squire and other rock royalty, the classic acoustic albums, the adventures into various world music forms, his blues material, and on, and on… Add to that all the concert videos, documentary footage and other extras that get packaged with his creative live performances… all the while eternally humble and gracious, and his concert tickets don’t require a second mortgage to obtain. Steve is simply a terrific talent, a class act, and a musical hero to admire.

Steve is one of those well kept secret kind of treasures. Kind of on the verge of major fame but off to one side and maybe that's best. He has the longevity now with all the things he's done and is still doing, at 74. In some ways, he's at the heights now or at least finishing his career on a high artistic plateau.

This interview in particular sold me on the idea that I should catch the Foxtrot show when it came near home. Caught the show in New London, CT last night and loved it. So glad I decided to check it out. Got a signed copy of the box set and the last two CDs.

Great interview! I don’t blame Steve for not wanting to play The Lamb in it’s entirety, being that it’s a double album. It’s also important to note that although Steve likes The Lamb, it was recorded during an unhappy time in his life, with his first marriage breaking up. He also suffered a hand injury that postponed the start of The Lamb tour for a bit. Also, Steve has said in the past that he thinks The Lamb is primarily “Peter’s baby,” so to speak. But I’ll be happy to hear whatever choice cuts from The Lamb he chooses to play on the 2024 tour. It will be great! 😊

What an interesting and splendid fellow he is. First time I saw him was at Liverpool Empire in 1979 for the Spectral Mornings tour. To sing Carry On Up The Vicarage he inhaled helium from a cylinder. You just don't get that sort of commitment these days.

By far, one of the very best interviews to date!!! And why not. Steve is such a down to Earth and friendly chap, and so passionate about music in general (not just his own), that it seemed more like two mates just catching up and enjoying each others company. Excellent questions and wonderful answers. What else could one want from an interview. I pre-ordered "Foxtrot At 50" quite some time ago, so I'm hopeful that it will arrive today, or tomorrow at the very latest. Thanks for an excellent interview, Barry, and yet another opportunity to sit, have a coffee, and ease drop (if you will) on yours and Steve's thoroughly enjoyable conversation!!! Cheers!!

Would love to hear the band play “Anyway” live. I would say he’ll probably include that on the highlights from the Lamb because of his great solo from that particular tune. Love his interviews.

About "The Lamb" topic, It would be really great if Steve add In The Cage or Back in NYC at least in his 2024 setlists. Two seminal Genesis tunes which he never played since 1975. The rest of the set completed with the regular tracks he play (Lamb, Windshield, BM, Cuckoo, Hairless, Carpet, 32 Doors, Lillywhite, Lamia) would be epic

Man, I would have loved listening to Steve and Nick chatting about the Beatles. Nick is also an unassuming individual. Out of the three Floyds Nick seems to be the least windbaggish. Steve is so relaxed and casual and seems to enjoy talking about his past. I detect nothing pompous about this guy. He just seems like a nice, friendly and accessible human being. Thanks Barry for a great chat. 🤘😳🤘

Great interview thank you so much Barry! Steve is a wonderful guy you can tell. Funny I never thought Nursery Cryme was poorly produced -- in fact "The Musical Box" was the first song I ever heard consciously of the band. I was hooked from the first stark twinkle of chord. And feel free to blast "Giant Hogweed"'s first 20 seconds from a good hi-fi system ? It sounds great. Our only hope would be demo's or the chance unreleased song, but unlike Ian's catalog, I fear there is little un-released Genesis material left. Finally, though I love Lamb and often cite it as their best, it's amazing how little guitar presence there is on that album. I mean four whole sides and there isn't really anything even close to "Firth of Fifth" on it -- not much of a singular solo at all on the whole 94 minutes. There's a bit of muscle here and there, "Fly on the Windshield," and I think a big washing solo on what is it "The Lamia" maybe? but Lamb is a very heavy keyboard album (and great solos by Banks for sure!) but I always am amazed at how little of a Hackett presence there seems to be on it. Again, thanks CAR!

In 1979 I went to the Reading Festival where Steve was playing. Peter Gabriel was also on the bill who was joined on stage by Phil Collins.... As young fans in the audience we hoped the three of them would perform a song together but sadly didn't.... Ive always wondered if they met up backstage for a pint?

Probably. Some of the old photos had Peter Gabriel with Pete Hammill and Phil with Pete Hamill. ... Or maybe it was Peter G with Richard Macphail actually. In the Armando Gallo books.

Steve said on Rock History Music that they wouldn't do The Lamb. I guess he meant in full. Highlights from The Lamb are the ideal way to go for 2024. Really, he could do 2/3 of the album.

I really like the philosophical take on the music that they are reaching fro. Steve says how when talking with Nick Mason of the Floyd @ about 15:54 - mason indicates that in 67 Floyd was in the building when the Betales where making Sargent Peppers - I say this because when I used to buy Pflod las in the early 70's, I saw the EMI label on the record and made the mental connection that Floyd where in the building with the beatles and therefore learned from, observed the habits of and developed directly from the beatles. Almost more than any other group in a way. I don't know why this memory sticks with me as this tough I had was when I was 12 or 13. Steve also indicates the englo9sh hymnal as being a big influence on Genesis - well my first Geneis record was SEBTP purchased in the early spring of 74… I used to sit and listen to that record on Sunday night through my Kenwood stereo and Warfdale speakers - and the sound of the record including all of side 2 - was to me - Church music - it was my sunday night church music of 1974. I felt that - related to it in a strong way - it was what I was thinking about when I was listening to it on Sunday night in the dark and dreary Hamburg spring night. That Lp sounded so good to me - it bounced - Phils drum sound was ambient it had depth to it like you were sitting next to the kit. I am encouraged that I was on the right path and the my perceptions were not because I was stoned back then but rather I was picking up on the spirit of the music. That spirit lives on - in and in me to this day.😄

I had massive respect for Steve during his Genesis years & beyond but the last 20 years or so he's maybe just depended on the Genesis songs too much in favour of his own material which is a surprise as in 1977 he couldn't wait to leave the band to do his own stuff!! He really did excel on every Genesis album he played on except The Lamb which he freely admitted in the past he just couldn't get into it partly due to personal problems & also basically he didn't like it!! Very strange.....

He said why on Rock History Music, more or less. It's on KZfaq. He didn't feel he had contributed that much guitar on The Lamb, I think. I hope he does the first three including Broadway Melody.

Steve is making quite a career out of his days with Genesis, isn't he? One might have thought he would have stayed with the band a sallied forth through the uncomfortable bits. Be that as it may or may not be that, excellent interview.

I don't think he was really that wanted on board ship, post 1977. No-one shouted, "Oh no, you can't possibly leave!" Sadly. Never mind. We have the original albums and we have the new gigs that are a pleasure. I kind of struggle to imagine Steve on any of the later Genesis stuff.

@@davebellamy4867 Agree. Steve could hear the writing on the wall. Wind And Wuthering was good place to leave before it got ugly. BTW- W&W is my go too desert island LP if I could only take one LP. Still, I think he could have contributed nice stuff to And Then 3 and maybe cashed in a little by Genesis' first Top 20 hit.
