We lived in the projects in Manhattan NYC downtown and in the 1960s those projects were mainly WHITE, there were some Puerto Rican families, one or two black families and even some Chinese people but it was mainly Irish, and they knew about government cheese and welfare, etc.... it's not just a black thing.

I used to work in summer programs for inner city kid's schools when I was a teen. We used to prepare Cheese sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches and jelly sandwiches for the kids. They would also get a fresh pint of grade A milk. It was usually the best meal of the day for them. That jelly, cheese and peanut butter was the best I ever tasted and never had anything like that again.

I remember them days when me and my sister's was coming up mom used to hit up different churches to get free cheese and butter.That was in the 80 s lol.yes the cheese made some good grill cheese. Sandwiches an macaroni cheese too. I miss that government cheese.we didn't never get that valveeta cheese like we do now.

Damn right! My grandmother used to get Guh'ment cheese. Came in a rectangular, grey/brown, cardboard box and wrapped in plastic inside. The Grilled cheese sandwiches were fantastic.

5 pound block of American cheese in a cardboard box. Pounds or real butter. White bread. On special occasions, a can of green Chiles in our grilled cheese sandwiches. And wash that bad boy down with a glass of powdered milk. If there was any left after eating kix cereal from the WIC program that morning. Thanks God for it. :)

I remember those days. Momma made me stand in the line while she parked the car. Then when we got it home, she would section it off and wrap it up for the freezer. My momma was smart. She would heat that BIG KNIFE she had on the stove. And that knife just slid through that cheese. Now it wouldn't be perfect but it was a lot more even than my friends cheese and tomato sandwiches. Yeah I said tomato, so we wouldn't get blocked up!

Yes, that cheese was so FUCKIN GOOD remember when you open da plastic an peel it back you could never close it back over the cheese an the next time you go to make another sandwich the cheese would have cold burns on it that was hella Brown you had to cut that part off before you got to the GOOD part to eat and he ant never lied about how hard it use to be to cut that good old cheese the Best Cheese Ever Made In Life was back in days 70s and 80s they Stop giving that cheese out way before the 90s sorry you 90s kid Don't know of this shit. And this New governments cheese is like a Velveta cheese it's soft still in a long Brown box but NOT THE SAME AT ALL NEW IN IMPROVED GOVERNMENT CHEESE BRING BACK THE OLD BOX AND THE OLD CHEESE TO DA HOOD WE WOULD LOVE IT.

As somebody who sells cheeses and smokes any kind i can find this is very valuable info. I have gotten “govment cheese” once but it was mozzarella and somebody gave it to me when i told them what i did. It was good but not special

If I’m right, the reason the cheese even existed was because of milk problems. In the late 70s milk was super cheap, and farmers weren’t making much. The government decided to buy the milk from farmers so prices would go up again. After so much milk and not enough usage/sales, the gov just made a shit ton of cheese and gave it away
