When fellow KZfaq creator Nonstop Eurotrip set me a challenge, I just couldn't turn it down. Within a couple of days I was standing on the platform at Montrose Railway Station looking forward to the long journey south. Are you ready for the stress of seeing if I make it in 24 hours? Enjoy the video :D
Filmed on 18th/19th March 2024

This video is not sponsored and all opinions are my own
I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZfaq Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I don't know about recognising Paris so easily but when you showed the first station in Switzerland I could tell that from the architecture. Travelling around Europe last year you could virtually always tell which country you were in by the buildings. I found Swiss railways to be excellent at least the local trains in the Interlaken area. They were on time and when you reached the station the connecting train was waiting at the platform. The trains were modern, clean and comfortable, I did buy a rail pass which covered the trains, mountain railways, cable cars and lake steamers.

To link your last 2 videos I was doing work experience in Sheffield in the late 80s & they were doing an office competition to forecast the winners of the English and Scottish leagues for the upcoming season. Some people who didn't follow football were struggling a bit and the man organising it asked one woman why she'd gone for Montrose in the Scottish 2nd division and she said because she liked their music festival.

Great video, I really enjoyed seeing this journey alongside a fun concept of doing it within 24hrs. Also, as someone who lives in both Nottingham and London then travels to Edinburgh for work semi-regularly. I felt seen in this video…😆. First, I’ve taken the Lumo to London quite a few times and I knew you’d likely not get any sleep. It’s truly a budget train experience and they’re usually quite noisy/busy. Second, as a very frequent passenger on the train from London to Nottingham - the prices you saw are correct and absurd. Keep up the good work.

I read some stat that 96% (or thereabouts, a lot anyway) of all late trains in Switzerland, the lateness is caused by trains that are arriving from other countries. So basically, Swiss trains, in Switzerland, never late. And from my experience, that’s true. Great video Steve, thank you.

Yes - I remember arriving at Berne Station for a train to Interlaken and being met by a staff member apologising for it's late running and suggesting the concourse shops or cafes to pass the time.....despite it only being 15 minutes behind schedule! I remarked how I thought it unusual for a train to run late in Switzerland - his answer "Ah, that's because it's come from Germany!"

Back in 2012 I did something similar. I’d always wanted to travel from my home in Dundee to my friends in Marseilles entirely by rail so ….. Train Dundee tonEdinburgh then sleeper Edinburgh to London Euston; walk to Kings Cross/St Pancreas to catch Eurostar then Gare du Nord. I took an internal Paris train to the Gare de Lyons, from where I took a TGV straight to Marseilles. There, my friend met me at the station. Total time about 18 hours station to station. The journey was done when sleeper trains were reasonably priced - relatively.

And shoutout to @NonstopEurotrip for coming up with the challenge! :) What are you going to give him in return? I am travelling from the Netherlands to Switserland by train almost every year. It is TOP. Nice video again, Steve. I guess you could have done this well under 15 hours but than it would have been pretty boring, with fast connections both in London and Paris, with an underground running RER line D in Paris (with which you can get a 20 minutes connection between Paris Nord and Paris Gare de Lyon). But than you also have to book it really in advance because of the prices.... Last minute bookings are so expensive nowadays. As you say in the video: it absolutely is crazy, in Britain even more so as on the continent.

Cool video again Steve! Nice challenge as well. And those few minutes you filmed in Switzerland just make me realize how much I miss going there! It has been way too long, what a stunning place with perfect trains!

Love the old school Casio watch Steve ⌚ They always remind me of John Candy in planes, trains and automobiles ✈️🚂🚗 Brilliant video as always. We went to Lausanne in January and visited the olympic museum as the IOC is based there, absolutely brilliant museum and think you would love it🏅 The next day we got a train from Lausanne to Chur and from there an epic train to St Moritz, the scenery was very special. From there though it got even better as we boarded the bernina train to Tirano in Italy, absolutely stunning and well worth a video. All regular trains as well so didn't cost a lot either 🚂🏔️ The next day we took a train along Lake Como to Lecco from Tirano where we took in the shores of Lake Como before changing train to Bergamo for a flight back to the UK. Highly recommended trip for sure. Keep up the great work, we have been spoilt this week with 4 videos including last Saturday's ♥️

Yet another cracking video Steve. I took the train from Geneva to Montreux & back a few years ago during a visit to CERN. Stunning scenery & a great destination. I particularly liked the artworks down by the water.

What is it with KZfaqrs and swiss trains. You are the 3rd youtuber I have seen in the last 24 hours that has brought a video out of trains and the swiss countryside. Great video and scenery.

Great idea from your friend. Got quite nail biting towards the end there. And I was blown away by those train fares, I'd heard they were expensive, but that much?..

Hmm, you got to do this again, but this time with shopping at Aldi in Montrose, and buying the same things at Aldi in Montreux, and compare price, taste, quality. Preferably you should buy 1 kilo of cheese, 1 kilo of ham, 1 kilo of minced beef, a collared shirt, 1 boxer shorts, 1 on pack of socks, one bread, a pack of butter and some tool they have on campaign. You can go by air both ways, anyway, thank you, is it tuesday you will be showing us Montreux? By the way, I miss the taxis in London driving on the platforms, whenever I/we was going to Bath or Penzance I/we took a taxi all the way to our coach....we were driven to our door on the train coach. However I don't remember how they checked the tickets then, because they had this system where you had to show your ticket to get on the platform. Unknown system in most other countries after the year 1910.

Well done Steve! That was quite a challenge and you came through it victoriously! I don't blame you for flying home. You were tuckered out crossing the finish line, and deserved a comfortable ride home up in the clouds. Onya mate!

That certainty a close call getting there with a minute to spare so well done. Your previous video in regards to the snooker was interesting and didn’t realise how popular it still is. When we got TV for the first time here in Alice, it was the ABC so lot of English soccer and snooker and used watch the great player-“Charlston??’. Or a name like that.
