Alright, me and Steve have been talking for a long time to get together for a full live improvisations jam Berlin School style.. and this weekend it happened. Steve has a big ass modular, mainly Doepfer modules but also some from Synthesis Technology...
So we connected our gear, warmed up the oscillators and patched things up... and this is what happened :)
Note: We lost track of time a bit, so some passages might be a bit long (especially the intro, melody comes in at 3 mins appx) and also levels are a bit off at times.. but hey, its live and these things happen. :) We will be better prepared next time for sure.
Steves Gear list: Doepfer Eurorack Modular system, (i wont list all his modules, dont remember them all).. plus 3x Synthesis Technology modules (E340 Cloud Generator/ E350Terrarium and E560 Deflector Shield). KORG monotron Delay x 2, FX: Alesis Wedge, Zoom G3.
Ollilab Gear list: ms-20, TR-8, System-1, Mininova, elektron analog four, KORG volca bass x 2, volca keys, FX: Jomox T-resonator mkII, ibanez es-2, Kaoss Pad, Strymon Timeline.
All Live and filmed in one go, strictly no multitracking
Do you like it, want to hear more? Please let us know. Cheers!

I think one of my favorite things about this whole video (besides the music) is that it looks like you're running a spaceship out of a suburban kitchen.

"At about 5 minutes the vision becomes more clear and the dreamer is unleashed, again." In a pre-fab world most songs are well defined from beginning to end, after initial establishing and taming-the destination of this collaborative effort becomes clear and that is personal to each listener, maybe. Good music is an art from inside BOTH listener and performer)s).

Hello Jouni - I've been following your videos for about a year now, since I purchased my MS-20 Mini in January, and first found your channel. I've really ejnjoyed and been inspired by your work (even bought an ES2 after seeing it in your videos :) I recently bought my first (semi-)modular, a Pittsburgh System 10, and what a blast it is! Kudos to you and Steve for branching out in collaboration - please record more, and post some for purchase if possible. Thanks!

@BURG 9 жыл бұрын
yeah, its a bit more off the chart from what i usually do.. but since its a collab there are two brains at work... so steves massive knowledge in the modular synthesis plays a big role on this track (seriously, at times i had no idea what he was doing) but it sounded frickin awesome :D Just keep on going with the flow so to say... cheers and thanks for your input!!
@VolcaRock
@VolcaRock 9 жыл бұрын
IT's fresh and inspiring to try out things out of the comfort zone and experiment like a colab with a singer or a modular brain ;-) although I do not own an analog modular I am subscribed to few guys, cause I am so fascinated by the sounds and possibilities of those machines..
@BURG
@BURG 9 жыл бұрын
VolcaRock Yes, true :) I think it takes a while when you buy a modular before you can put it into practical use.. eg learning to wiggle it. I had a pretty big system as a loaner once many years back... and I cant really recall using it for a track properly ever :) hahaha... so ill just let the guys who know their stuff keep on doing it, maybe get a smaller desktop style modular just to try it out.. like the upcoming Phenol from kilpatrick // www.kilpatrickaudio.com/?p=phenol
@RCAvhstape
@RCAvhstape 9 жыл бұрын
VolcaRock I know a guy near me who has a Moog-clone modular and the thing is amazing. Takes up a lot of space in his music room, too. I could totally see that getting out of control. like guitar effects pedals only worse LOL!
@VolcaRock
@VolcaRock 9 жыл бұрын
ollilaboratories this is the hardest thing being unable to recall sounds, so its more for the magic of the moment when recording than for a live act. Totally agree with the amazing phenol, I saw it on synthopia. More and more desktop units are coming.also really like the tinysizer. But damn I have so much gear to explore at home so I will buy a big modular when I will receive pension ;-)

@BURG
@BURG 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I mainly use panasonic lumix cameras, GX7, GF5 with a selection of different lenses plus the Zoom Q4. The audio is line in on the zoom Q4 camera directly from mixing console, which give me high quality audio.

Fantastic jam, as per usual! Really enjoyed the movement and the subtle progression of the composition(if I am allowed to call it that!:D). And a technical question: where does the almost glitchy delay that is present now and again through the jam come from?

Great!! Will there be a Berlin School Album? I love this kind of music. And I'm not sure about the "watching the time" thing. It could be longer........ many of the live TD or Klaus Schulze pieces could be an hour or more. KS felt limited by vinyl's 30min or so limit. Keep going!!

+ollilaboratories Do you have any of the 3 studio albums by the "Nightcrawlers"? This would be Tom Gulch, Pete Gulch, and Dave Lunt from Camden NJ. It might also be Pete Gulch, Chuck Van Zyl, and Andrew Rath. Tom, Pete, and Dave were known for having a lot of "fillers" in their songs before the themes even got started. Chuck Van Zyl hosts a radio program out of the University of Pennsylvania called Stars End. It's on WXPN. Listen to that program. Some of the songs he plays on that show never got beyond a few simple chords and no real melody at all.

Never tried the reface CS, I have the reface CP piano and the quality of the build and also sounds are great. battery operated and with great little speakers it is very portable. If the CS is half as good as the CP i cant see why ti would not be a good buy. :D

I just went a bought a Microbrute and a Micro Korg after listening to your work. Volcas are next and maybe the TR8. What effect are you using on that kick drum on the TR8? Keep up the great work!
@BURG
@BURG 9 жыл бұрын
Glad to be of assistance! :) The TR8 is just like everything else routed through the Kaoss PAD.. but this particular FX does not really affect the kick.. so its sort of dry on this one. Just tweaked with long decay, tuned low and with no attack. cheers and thanks!
@WingMan1964

I have a lot to learn. You are running everything through the Kaoss Pad and using it as an effects processor?
@BURG
@BURG 9 жыл бұрын
For this particular track and setup yes... a very subtle grain delay which is more audible on high pitched sounds so it sort of triggers mostly on the Analog Four pattern and hi hats.

I'm loving your Berlin school jams. Thanks for some great music. Found this video of your first session just after I stumbled onto one of Alan Watts lecturing that I hadn't heard before and played them simultaneously in separate tabs, with your music as accompaniment to Watts speaking (or vice versa): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKxmaJh5zMjId3U.html .
