I have just fully restored my first air rifle from 1984 (Webley Vulcan) but mainly fire centre fire rifles now. I would regularly fire 500 pellets a week and all types. The most important thing that I learnt in 1984 was getting my technique correct. I was pleased to see that this was the first main point you made. Being consistent in your shooting technique first is so important. Practice will help with this and then work on your pellet choice. After restoring my old springer, I remembered how much I miss shooting my old air rifle. There are lots of experts out there ready to give advice but most importantly enjoy shooting first and don’t get down about it. Your beginner videos are a really good foundation where practice will then lead to consistency. Great video btw

Hi Steve, I just want to say how useful and informative I have found this series and that I have enjoyed every minute of them. Brother what you and so many others are doing for our airgunning community is awesome and I thank you for it. Some new shooter think that speed is king. NOT! In my thinking that just lets them shoot heavier pellets more effectively and they need to stay away from the light pellets in these ultra fast guns. The cost of some pellets is another thing also. One example would be the H&N Hornet, they see these and think wow I can shoot through this and that or I can kill anything with these or maybe man these are going to be so bad ass accurate I can’t miss. Wrong! You are so right by an all around diabolo shapes pellet and try different brands to match the barrel, speed of the gun with the pellet. Thank you for that. Straight up truth right there. Fortunately for me the Daisy 15.4 grain Hollow Points that are now made in Spain and are basically Gamo Red Fire without the polymer tip are my go to pellets and sale on Amazon for 7$ a tin of 500. The lead is as soft as JSB which by the way are the best shooting overall pellets in all of my guns. Love what your doing and greatly appreciate it. Thanks again and take care.

I actually just switched hunting pellets today. Was using 14g H&N Sniper Lights bought a load of JSB’s From Pyramid Air 13.43, 14.35, 15.89, and 18.13 grains. Most money I’ve ever spent on pellets at once turned out to be a sweet move. My Crosman 1322 and Swarm Maxxim both shoot all four relatively accurate, half inch or so at 15 yards with the worst groups. The best groups however were awesome to say the least, stacking pellets with the 15.89 in the Crosman and the 13.43’s in the Swarm. Had decent groups with my old pellets but investing in more refined pellets had definitely increased accuracy.

Hi Steve, that was a nice little video and I agree with most that you say. A couple of comments i would like to make, I use a plastic sieve as there is less chance of damage being caused to the pellect and I always rince through in cold water as it kills the soaping agent and deactivates the salt in the wasking up liquid. Keep up the good work. Aje
@airgunology
@airgunology 6 жыл бұрын
Nice a plastic sieve works better, problem is only use that for pellets as lead will ingrain into the sieve. Cold water to rinse, then hot to help them get hot and let water evaporate quicker.

I brother I have mad respect for you videos, opinions, information you share with us. I have 7 different PCPs from Umarex Gauntlet to LCS SK-19 all in .22 and after 32 tins of 500 I am more than confident to say that the Daisy Hollow Points made in Barcelona Spain under the same roof as Gamo Red Fire which I believe are the second stage of Daisy Hollow Points, meaning that I think they are the base pellet for... they hold groups of a 1/2” at 50 yards in all my guns. They are high quality, consistency, and value. 7$ USD for 500 on Amazon. Most including me have always went to a high dollar high quality pellet for accuracy and most of the time this is true, however, in this case I really believe you need to check these out and I would give my left testicle for you to do a review on these. The energy they impart on game at less than 50 yards is crazy. They mushroom on contact and hold tight groups for a hollow point in this price range. It is not uncommon for me to shoot an entire magazine from my SK-19 or Liberty,aka ALPHA, Gauntlet, Benjamin Sheridan 392 and get a one hole group at 50 yards. Past that granted with the low BCs of .018 ish...it’s like shooting a parachute plain and simple but for plinking and back yard pest control and hunting...you will be hard pressed to beat them...PROMISE. Just try them...if I’m wrong I will send you the money for the cost of the tin. So many people over look them and I think it is because of their cost. They are not cheap quality or cheaply made and the results may just surprise you. I can not wait to hear if I owe you 7$ or not. I think you will have found a new pesting/hunting pellet. Mind you the best speed for these pellets is 700 up to about 910 FPS with a 1-18 twist. Just give them a chance. Your welcome. And thank you. By the way the AA Diabolo 16 gr only hold slightly better groups out to 50 yards past that...AA ALL THE WAY!👍

I checked out best pellets for my Hatsan sniper vortex .177 £6 great!!!! postage £8 rip off so when I visit the UK I will get some. By the way the Hatsan is not a springer perhaps you could do a video on this type of Vortex rifle. I am very lucky I have a 80 metre long enclosed rear garden in my French home so can set up for 50 metres targets.

Steve great video and advice. I wash my pellets and weigh them. I do use JSB which I believe are like air arms, the ones with a thin skirt which the air in the rifle will press the skirt into the grooves hopefully giving better accuracy. Keep up the good work, to you newbies buy the best gun, scope and pellets you can, the rest of the kit you can get cheaper and work your way up to a quality product. This sport is one where you get what you pay for, gun wise BSA R10 or air arms S410 are my choice, the bsa is heavy but a quality gun. Air ar,ms are easy to work on, try looking at you tube instructional videos and get to know your gun, only do it if you feel competent, when you master this you will have friends asking you to service or mend their guns.

I've just purchased three different makes of pellet off EBay in packets of 50 for my first visit to a range tomorrow to hopefully find the best pellet for my Remington Tyrant. I have been using the Wasps (given to me by the gun shop) and I'm hoping my inconsistency in the back garden is at least partially down to the pellet, we'll see 😊 Certainly I have found some of the Wasp pellets slip into the barrel almost as though they are too small, whereas others are too large for the barrel and have been discarded! Great advice once again Steve 👍

Good explanation Steve :) I recently got back into airgun shooting mainly for target shooting, but have been given access to a friends land with pigeon problems. I'm just starting out with a Gamo Phox rifle pack which at just over £500 (bargain in my opinion) you get a ten shot PCP Rifle, scope,( which I upgraded to a 8.5-25x42 true mildot scope at 20x magnification) two lots of targets, a gun bag, pump, silencer, and two tins of pro shot precision .22 pellets 18 grains. Now saying that, I've not shot my rifle yet but I will use the pellets given in the package from my garden which is 22 metres and see how they go, but I've also done some you tube watching of the same gun on a rifle range and the good grouping from using about three tins of different brand pellets out at 25-40 yards turned out to be Daystate sovereigns. So that is where I will start from pellet wise. I want to find the best pellet for the gun before I shoot any live quarry. Keep up the the god work mate :)

Great advice. My tip for 1377 gun- buy a tin of jsb exact express for scope sighting. Then get rws superdomes at 1/3 the cost for pest control. 0.5" group at 20, 7/8" group at 30 yards with rws pellets. Very good for the price. Still jsb is even better if you have the cash, but not required for tree rats. I use cheaper pellets for plinking and 10 yard practice. Cheap pellets dont go far with my 1377.

Hi Steve. Before buying an air rifle etc. I have been watching plenty of video's on various PCP guns, scopes etc. to try and understand the differences between them, so I can hopefully make a better choice regarding purchasing. I came across a shop seeling pellets and noted that they gave the diameter of each of the different 177 pellet brands on the tin lids. Could you please explain why different manufacturers produce 177 pellets of differing diameters? Thanks.

With reference to cleaning your barrel between different pellets while doing pellet testing. I would suggest that, if you're trying different pellets from the same manufacturer, cleaning doesn't make a huge amount of difference. I've recently been testing a few RWS pellets, and found that, though the point of impact over 15 yards was about half a pellet width, the new pellets grouped well right from the start. They are possibly made of the same lead composition, and personally I think it's this that is the telling factor here. If I was to test a pellet from a different manufacturer, I would give the barrel a clean and put 20 or so through the rifle before actually testing them for accuracy.
@airgunology
@airgunology 6 жыл бұрын
yup, many different theories and practices on this and the purest would clean and put many pellets through. Not really practical. What I tend to do is put about 20 new pellets through without cleaning the barrel and then test groupings. Thanks for your comments, very useful.

If either Mr Allen could have a go at answering my stupid questions I would be grateful..... Surely a plastic sieve? How does that heat (that you can't keep your hand in) and rubbing against steel, not deform the pellets? Do you then have to sort through and choose the ones that haven't been damaged? Would it be better to clean them in small batches to limit damage? Does this change grain weight? Thank you for your video and anyone who responds, respect, JC

Lead is a well known and proven neuro-toxin, yet I've not seen one video addressing the dangers of firing a lead projectile in a confined space nor the necessity to wash one's hands after handling lead pellets. I think that I am safe in saying that many, newbies to experienced shooters, give little thought to the dangers to one's health. I have however seen slow-motion videos which clearly identify the plume of lead particles leaving the barrel created by the lands and grooves of the rifling. In a proper indoor shooting gallery, negative air pressure is employed to draw air and airborne debris downrange to protect the shooters from excessive lead exposure, but the danger is very real when shooting in one's own basement or garage, and I think we do a grave disservice by not drawing attention to this. In view of this, I have discovered copper-coated pellets which group quite well in my Crosman Raven .177. I have to disagree with you regarding washing pellets; flushing lead into our ecosystem, contaminating fish and other species up the food chain is a real no-no. Yes, lead occurs naturally in the world but adding to it is certainly not a necessity. Just my humble 2-cents worth. Thoroughly enjoy your series just the same.

Daniel Sidaway........ Washing, First of all.. the amount of lead particles that is released from washing is So minute, that it's really not worth even discussing, and as far as your hands are concerned... you just had them in warm/hot soapy water, and then with the rinsing... they're clean. As far as your point about the eco-system, compared to what big industry, the petroleum industry, the military and other huge polluters are contributing to that problem, I think that the Extremely minuscule amount (in reality, when compared to whole numbers) of airgunners who Actually even bother to "wash" their pellets... makes the whole argument of contamination, an even lesser issue. As far as shooting in the basement or garage is concerned.... if you're really that concerned about it, yourself.... then wear a dust mask when you shoot.... and then after you're done shooting for a few hours, take it off Gently (we don't want to dump all that lead dust on the floor), and get a magnifying glass and look carefully to see how much lead dust was trapped in the fibres of your mask...... I have actually done this, and I was very hard pressed to see any..... and that was after nearly four hours of shooting. There was a tiny amount of actual airborne "Dust" particles after that amount of time breathing through the mask, but I could not find any amount of lead particles or lead appearing "dust" and I have not worn a dust mask, since. I have been shooting air guns for many years (decades).... and I am in perfect health, with No medical issues whatsoever.... and, "if" I have breathed in any amount of airgun pellet lead over all these years, at all.... it sure hasn't effected my health any, and even if "we" do.... it's absolutely Nothing, compared to all the crap that is in the air these days, with everything from microwave radiation, chemtrails, and a list of other pollutants that would stretch from London to Boston.... and there is Not a thing you or I can do to change or stop it either..... the damage has already been done, and continuing to worsen.... so, if I were you... I wouldn't lose any sleep, or cause any riots or protests because of an almost imperceivable trace amount of lead Dust that "might" be in the air, out of your muzzle. Also, as a side note.... a number of Chinese manufactured pellets have a very dark, almost Black appearance to them.... do NOT wash them in soapy water, Very GENTLY Rinse them Only, if you wish.... in COOL water, just to get rid of any minuscule particles..... because the "blackness" comes from Grafite impregnated (or coated, in some cases) lead which is a lubricant.... some pellets with the same appearance in color, have a sprayed on "sealer" which also acts as a lubricant.

Is there a possibility of water staying inside the pellet after washing? Have you ever checked?
@airgunology
@airgunology 7 жыл бұрын
Yes there is, hence why I use HOT water so it evaporates. It is best to shake the pellets up whilst drying and leave them for a day or so to make sure they are dry.

Are you aware of any other materials ie dense nylon used for pellets? Bio degrading?

Not that I know of, doubt any carry the softness needed to rifle the bullet and have the weight.

It is possible, is your scope springer rated. Also take the scope off and shake it, does it rattle ?

Can using thousands and thousands of unwashed pellets eventually damage your barrel ?
@airgunology
@airgunology 4 жыл бұрын
No, pellets are self cleaning in barrels and lube / coat the barrel each time. Called leading. Barrels should only be cleaned if you see a performance / accuracy drop.

Steve Allan If thats the case, why do people wash and lube pellets? Cheers

I'm a new airgunner, and as soon as I saw the title of this video, I almost gave it up. Why the f*ck would I need to clean pellets?

Hi-ho there, Steve! I am a 66-years "Old-fart" who loves my airguns, who really likes your channel, which is why I allow, when you upload videos, to have an email pop into the in-box. You seem to already have folks complaining about your 'harping' regarding cheap vs expensive pellets, so that is a given. My small 'issue' is that you seem to keep going back & forth about it during your videos. I think it would be GREATLY appreciated by your viewers if you do your 'soapbox' thing ONCE, and be done with it. But to go ON & ON & ON & ON_ it becomes a bit of an annoyance. Buddy, I am NOT trying to be mean spirited here, but I bet there are many more like me, who really enjoy what you bring, but wish you would make your statement of FACT (first thing I ALWAYS do with a new gun is find the pellet it likes, so I KNOW IT IS A FACT... LISTEN to this man!), and be DONE with it for the remainder of the video. OH! Just had a thought here! MAYBE right at the end of the video, you could create a "SIGNATURE STATEMENT SIGN-OFF" like, "Remember, my peeps. Quality can make a difference. Shoot some cheap, some not so cheap, and when you CAN afford it, a REALLY good tin of high-end brand of pellets. And I KNOW you will see the difference. Until next time, CHEERIO!!!" HEY!_ it's JUST a thought, Steve. ;-)

Thanks for the comments. Most of my videos are unscripted and I do tend to repeat myself sometimes. Some of my videos do overlap. For example my beginner series and the cheap pellet video. Yes overlap and I am sorry about this, but hopefully I do say it is my opinion and in this case state that cheaper pellets may work for some. Either way thank you, I am learning as I am going along after 4 months of tubing and these comments are extremely important. Thank you for viewing. Steve

For me, the main thing for subscribing is, does the channel bring anything into my life that is helpful? If not, I don't clutter-up my in-box with it. Thanks again for what you provide. Nuff said.
