I still have my trusty HD25 which I used for DJing over 20 years ago. Still work fine despite having had more bumps than a tug boat. The fact you can move one cup off of one ear makes them classics to any DJ (of enough years). Have now moved onto HD650s for home use.

I gave my HD25's to my friend back in the 90's. I have ears that cannot tolerate anything that presses against them for more than 30 min. So I am now addicted to AKG that basically cover the ears, and sound great. Nice video Steve, and yes Sennheiser is amazing.

I just got a pair last week. Love them. Out of the box the bass was actually a tad sloppy though they quickly tightened up with use. Highly recommended for on the go.

The HD25s are designed to be used while a PA is blasting, so they have pronounced mid and low. Not the best for pleasant, relaxed listening. Well, for me, anyway.
@QoraxAudio

Jup the pronounced bass is to make beatmatching a bit easier; it's similar to the Pioneer HDJ-1000 (former Pioneer X10).

IMO, headphones that are best tried out before buying, the clamping force is no joke on these. The 'pro' nature of them also means they were originally meant to stay firmly in place and isolate for live mixing and DJ work.
@ethanwasserman6547
@ethanwasserman6547 4 жыл бұрын
For on ears, these isolate like no other headphone I've used before. If any music is playing at even moderate levels, you can't hear anything or anyone.

Hey Steve, I think you would really enjoy the AKG K712 Pro. It has an immersive soundstage, which really feels like you're in a different environment, with a very enjoyable sound signature, good separation and detail retrieval ( it has a way of cramming the details in like the HD800, but without being harsh) and an interest layering (what it decides to put in the foreground and background). It is amp picky though. It also has a rather strange quality, which (more than in other headphones) let's you FEEL not just the bass but the midrange too, so if the vocalist breaths or growls you feel it in your throat (This might just be my ears). As I said, it is amp picky, so if you end up listening try it with a few different amps.

Not the first time you've recommended these, is it? I've been recommending the Ikko OH10's to Steve for months. He has to have seen at least one of them. Really frustrating when you know he will like what you're recommending because he reviews other stuff with similar qualities and talks about how he loves it. Steve is his own person, though, and it's not like we're neighbors and can just knock on his door and say "Hey! Check this out, I think you'll love it!" So, no matter how well intentioned we are, it just ain't gonna happen. I recommend we let bygones be bygones, before we get annoying. : )

Before the iconic Sennheiser 414s I’d always viewed headphones as sort of industrial tools, just something you had to use to perform a task and didn’t give them much thought. But when the 414s came out with their sleek modern appearance and bright yellow pads headphones suddenly became noticed and even a bit cool. The next evolution was the Walkman when headphones shrunk and became sleeker with different coloured ear pads, they became lifestyle and pseudo fashion accessories. Now headphones have become ubiquitous thanks to Beats and the Bose noise cancelling headphones. And rather than simply half shells you stuck over your ears headphones now come in a plethora of shapes, sizes and materials . They’ve come a long way in terms of design and sound.

I really like your channel Steve. I’ve been binging your videos for a week now, and you have a way of being an audiophile, while not being pretentious about it. You have a genuine love for audio and it shows! As far as the HD25s go I actually took a saw to one of my two pairs to remove one of the two headbands. That made it too loose, so I used some electrical tape and a women’s plastic hairband to tighten it a bit. Finally I have a pair of HD25s I can wear for long music production and doesn’t cause me SEVERE ear pain. As far as the bass goes, it’s my favourite headphone for making music because as you said it’s FUN!

I love my HD25s. I have several part of headphones but I use the HD25s the most as they are comfortable and my only closed back headphones. I can through them in a ruck sack and not worry about them getting damaged. They block out so much external sound they sound great on public transport such as noisy trains. My old pair got stolen but I use the standard steel cable on my new pair as I durability is important for me. I use other better sounding more expensive open back headphones for indoor listening.

Back in the early 70's I had a pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones. Great base and pretty good treble (i think they were $75 at the time). Several years later I listened to a "velocity type" headphone (probably Sennheiser) and I was blown away by the open/free sound. There was probably a bit of a trade-off in base but the base seemed adequate and more detailed than the Koss.

The HD-414s were the first headphones I bought, back in the '70s. The HD-25s were my second, a few years ago. The 25s sound MUCH better than the 414s, which are severely lacking in bass response. The 25s go deep, but they are not bloated -- if there are low frequencies in the source material, the 25s reproduce it, but they don't add their own. They are flat and neutral. They're also very durable, whereas the foam pads on the 414s wear out with distressing regularity.

For ear comfort, the HD424 are still comfortable after 40 years, a better HD414. By then, the headphone cords no longer broke. But for the anniversary HD424 made later, they lost the art, and they sounded bad. And every few years thankfully, Sennheiser still makes new foam flat pads, which do still dissolve.

Thats not a throw away question , but a lot of the pro audio guys especially on the live tour or dance music scene are heading towards being deaf ,, which effects every knob or slide they touch , whice in turn effects every thing every one else hears , just a thought .

I few hours later I tried again and was able to buy a pair. Not sure which pair I will get. It's supposed to be a random process but how can it be when the packaging is completely different? I used to have the HD414 which I bought for 10 Dutch guilders, lets say $4,- in its day. It was second hand of course and had blue foam (that later deteriorated) and it was modified to have the wire come out of the top becasue it came from a record shop. But indeed it did sounded fantastic. Besides that, I am not much of a headphone guy but I have been thinking to get one because I live in an apartment and I do not want to disturb the neighbors late at night. So when I saw this review, I thought what the heck and went on eBay (after being shocked by the prices on Amazon) and bought one on the spot whilst this video was playing on the background. I guess I have to blame Steve for my impulse buy... Anyway, I will keep the box because if I don't like it, this might be something you can sell at a profit once the limited supply dries up.

I consider myself an audiophile and currently own these, some crappy SkullCandy headphones, 200.00 Audio Technica headphones and a great pair of Vmoda Crossfire 100s. The 250.00 Crossfires are the only ones that beat the 13.00 Koss's at nearly 20 times the price!!!! Yah, that's 20x the price!!! Are the Vmoda's worth it? I don't know.

i had 414s AND 424s. i truly wish they would reissue the 414 but with a tighter band. the bass was really good when the drivers were pressed into your ears with your fingers. maybe not as deep as some but TIGHT. the 424s weren't as smooth as the 414s so i unloaded them too. for years i didn't have good headphones and sufficed with the $8 walkman phones which were pretty good, especially for the money. Miles Davis' Siesta was a find of mine as soon as i saw it on vinyl, later i got it on cd for the car. i look it as a sort of electronic Sketches of Spain. it was just him and Marcus Miller. i found it after Tutu cam out, another fave. i may have to get the hd25 on your recommendation. i get the 414 pads to go on my grado sr60s and they fit some of the others too. not so good on the PS1000s though (i have a pair). ...hifitommy

A year later I bought some Koss electrostatic esp 7s that were better than anything else at the time . My favorite headphones now are Sennheiser HD-650s so Sennheiser has come a long way but the 414s would be destroyed by even koss porta-pros now . But I might buy the HD25s just because I've never owned a pair

It looked interesting until you mentioned that it's a head clamp. That's a deal breaker for me. Any recommendations for phones that don't squeeze our ears?

@@Gandalf721 I currently have an old Stax SRD-44 electret "earspeaker" system. I can tolerate wearing them for 1 LP side (usually), but then I need to take a break.

I would love to see Sennheiser come out with a special edition HD-414 that has more bass and a cleaner top end.
