My husband and I were shocked to find out his dad was a high functioning alcoholic. He's had problems with his hip over the last few years and decided to get one of those necklaces with an emergency button on it. We got a call in the middle of the night saying he was being transported to the hospital after a fall. Turns out his blood alcohol was something insane (sorry I don't remember the exact number, just that it was crazy high). We found out he'd been drinking about twelve giant bottles of bourbon a week. He had to be kept in the hospital while he was detoxing so he wouldn't die. We had no idea he drank anything more than an occasional glass of wine. He hid it so well. It's nuts.

Recovering high functioning alcoholic here. It is insane what someone can drink when they do it every day for 40 years. I could literally drink a half gallon of vodka in a night, sleep it off, puke upon awakening and go to work the next day. Some days I only drank a fifth but some days I had to be blowing a .30 BAC while teaching my 11am tax class and still did a damn good job at it. Yes, I drove to work in that condition. I regret that shit now, my health isn't the best and alcoholic damage is 90% of it.

My dad was life flighted from one useless hospital to a competent one. He was trimming trees, fell off the roof, and broke his back. The first hospital he went to tried to make him leave and come back the next day. Wouldn't you know, it was a NURSE who heard this, thought it was total BULLSHIT, and contacted my dad's insurance and made arrangements for him to be flown to a better hospital. There, they found a blood clot near his spine from the injury, and if he'd tried to move around like that on it, it would've paralyzed him. He had to stay in the hospital for awhile, obvs, but mostly to make sure the clot dissolved with meds, I presume, and not surgery. He didn't have to have surgery. He had to have back brace and months of bedrest, in which he couldn't really get up at all. When he was able to walk around in the brace, a kid asked him if he was a robot, though, so that was pretty cool bc he was like, "Yeah."

Sorry your dad had the blood clot, and sorry he had a shitty doctor. But that's great he told that kid he was a robot! 🤣🤣 Dads are great like that. My dad had once worked in aerospace, but he couldn't work there after a while because he became disabled. He carried a 10-lb boxy portable liquid oxygen tank , technology straight from NASA's Apollo Program. So a kid saw him wearing his T-shirt, "This is a Bionic man worth six million dollars" and asked him, "what is that?" pointing to the oxygen tank. "I'm an astronaut," Dad said. Dad was so cheeky. He loved messing with kids' minds!

Hello! I'm Mexican, currently living here as I have been for my entire life. We do celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but not to the extent that American people do. It is really tame celebration and rarely are there any big parties around it. Maybe restaurants fuss about promotions and whatnot, but other than that, no. So, yeah, we do celebrate it but not to the American degree!

I had power of attorney over my mother and l was very grateful when a hospital Dr took me aside and explained kindly and carefully why l should put a DNR in place for her. My mother had dementia and was VERY frail, the Dr told me honestly that, resuscitating someone as elderly and frail as she was often resulted in broken ribs and extensive bruising, may only prolong her life for a few months and that she would spend those last few months in a great deal of pain and confusion. Luckily it didn't come to that as she passed away peacefully from other causes but, it made the decision to put a DNR in place much easier.

Dnrs r brutal. My step fil just got his (terminal escholgeal cancer) and its a little sticker on the front door, and a small plastic canister in the fridge, so paramedics know not to start on him if he passes at home. My fil never got that far, but paramedic in car arrived first, she asked, i just shook my head, and she absolutely knew what i meant, please dont do that to him. She walked in, saw he was gone, and said im not touching him ok? And i was so relieved i could of cried if i wasnt already! Please if u r terminal, and dont want all that extra pain, sign it!!!! My grandfather decided he didnt want resuscitation, so they took out his pacemaker, and left him to his own devices. He wasnt terminal, but was old, had a serious heart issue (hence pacemaker) and parkinsons that was rapidly progressing. He lived another 5yrs, but with the peace thay theyd never man handle him back to life, when he was ready to go.

My husband (in pic) had to be life flown from 1 ER to another.... I'd asked them to take him to take him to the better hospital in the 1st place.... it takes the same amount of time to get to both. They claimed they weren't allowed to because it was in a different county & they had to go to the closest available... if that were the case the main hospital that I requested they take him has an ER only which is closer than either hospital but still both main hospitals take the same amount of time to get to either 1... Legally they can take you to whatever hospital you want as long as you are not dying... he was, however, the hospital they took him to couldn't provide the care he needed, hence why I told them to take him to the other to begin with, which is why they stabilized as best they could (same that could've been done sooner at the ER) then he could've been transported to the main hospital. He lived that time, was in ICU for a week & hospital for another week &½.

@thegreypath1777 Not in this case. They claimed that it was because the 1 I asked them to go to was out of county & they needed to go to the nearest 1. Like I said, though, it takes the same amount of time to get to either 1. Insurance didn't play a factor in this situation.

I drink a hella lot but I am aware of it. I work eight to four, but after four it is drink time (after of course cooking for my husband and taking care of some household stuff). Nothing too crazy, just feeling cozy watching youtube after a few drinks. The "downside" is of course that I rarely get drunk going out with friends to overpriced bars. They are sloshed after two glasses of wine, but I don't feel a thing. This habit is obviously bad and I am working on limiting my alcohol intake by staying busy in the afternoons so I don't get to sit down and have a drink :)

That one about blood thinners is so real. My grandpa was on a crazy high dose of blood thinners, but also had dementia. One day he tried to trim his toenails with garden sheers, and when he came back into the living room he was trailing blood, so I went into the bathroom and it looked like a murder had taken place. I ran to get towels to wrap and elevate his feet, while of course my aunt (his daughter) was panicking like a helpless fish. It took a LONG time before the bleeding fully stopped, so long that I almost called an ambulance- but right as I was about to, it finally quit. After that I told my grandma (my grandpa’s primary caregiver) to insist the doctors dial back the blood-thinners.

I remember when most cars didn't even have seat belts. Back then, if you had a major crash you simply died. I started wearing a seat belt in the 1980's and am glad I did, I had a car crash where I was trying to cross a major highway and was plowed into at 50 mph. All of us were buckled in and unhurt. The lady that hit the side of my car wasn't buckled in and was rushed to the hospital (my father got her information and went to see how she was doing the next day and a couple of weeks after -- he knew I wouldn't do it, she was healing then and came out of the crash OK but she sued my ass over it and my car insurer settled for nuisance value).

Ya know, I hadn’t thought much of it, but over the last year and a half, they always ask pre-surgery, if I’ve considered a DNR. I’m in liver failure, so I guess it’s practical. Paracentesis only is a stop gap, so I can breathe and eat. But it’s still kinda depressing. These surgeries are 4 X’s a year, so I can breathe. As I still don’t have a liver specialist, I guess that’s the closest I get to an honest diagnosis. Other than that one doctor that wasn’t really on my ward, but when I asked him about my condition, he said I have one to three years. Honesty is great, but I have questions, and no one to answer them. So my brain just goes crazy. But I digress. I guess I oughta sign one.
@mharris5047 Жыл бұрын
If you are in an HMO, call your insurance company and ask what liver specialist in your general area is part of your insurance plan then get referred to him (your primary can do it). If you have Medicare, a fee for service insurance policy or a PPO (a PPO may be able to assist you the same as an HMO -- it depends on the company behind the policy), you will have to do your own research and may have to self-refer. You might be eligible for an insurance paid liver transplant (even if you are a recovering alcoholic) and be able to live for another 30 years but you need a liver specialist to get the process started.

Had a friend in college if their alcohol content got to Tainted with blood their grades would plummet so whenever they try to go sober we Captain eye on their grades and after about three months we gave them a bottle of vodka and told them they had to drink it before going to class and they taste their test after months of failing pretty much everything. Obviously we help them with the study session while they were drinking. After that they never put down the bottle and they graduated with honors. The only reason that we knew about their drinking problem was because they would drink at the gazebos where everyone else drank and it was a social thing however none of the professors really knew that they were plastered in every single class and never really boasted about being an alcoholic or a high-functioning alcoholic just everyone who is a student who hung out with them knew because well it's kind of hard not to know whatever you're literally passing the bottle around.

I was a tax professor for 30 years. A normal person with my usual BAC would have been beyond plastered but I stood up in front of the class and taught like a sober person. I won many awards and also published in academic journals regularly during my career. It is astounding how much of an alcohol tolerance someone can have if his genetics (my grandfather was also one hell of an alcoholic) and drinking habits combine in a harrowing way.
@dalton6173 Жыл бұрын
@@mharris5047 there's a vast difference between being a student whose plastered and being a professor well being plaster. Granted you may have done a great job and you may have hid the fact that you were extremely intoxicated very well however there are certain jobs you should not do while drunk and teaching is definitely well. Also sounds like you got awards back in the day whenever people used to 100% embrace the stereotypes unlike today where it's like 98% embracing the stereotypes.

DNR's aren't always safe. My Great Aunt (my moms aunt) sometimes would have a hard time clearing her throat from phlegm due to having a hard time swallowing. When she was in the hospital she was having a hard time clearing her throat after having an infection. My mom asked for help. The nurses called Respiratory. 90 minutes later no one showed up and my mom asked where they were. The nurse said "well she has a DNR." My mom had a shit fit and respiratory was called again. 3 minutes later, respiratory showed up in my Great Aunts room. We had another 15 years with my aunt. It was a good quality of life also. She got to see my brother and I graduate high school and university. My brother was the first on my mom's side of the family that graduated from university. Now that I'm in the Medical Field I know that oxygen, position for comfort, splint or immobilize, SUCTION, etc isn't included in the DNR and what the nurse said was illegal.
