I agree. I made it a point to teach my kids everything they wanted to know, and a good deal they didn't know they wanted to know. And I STILL want the schools to teach them sex ed, just in case I missed anything. Besides, we live in the South. I KNOW my family very much the exception rather than the rule here.

Agreed. That was actually much more of a wholesome ending than I anticipated. Sucks the kid had to be scared so badly. Great that she had the awareness still to go to the ER and mom had the awareness to recognize her fault so both mom and hospital staff can maybe explain things a lot better and in a more informative way.

I agree, it’s sad to know there are people who don’t teach their kids the simplest basics of where babies come from. I honestly don’t remember a time when I didn’t know where babies come from. My mom taught me everything in age appropriate ways in every phase of my life. I also went to school in places where reproductive education was mandatory. None of it ever made me feel like I should go out and have sex. If anything it made me wait until I was older. It also kept me from getting pregnant for a long time and kept me from getting any STI’s. (I did get pregnant unexpectedly because my birth control failed, but I was in my mid 20’s and the person I got pregnant with was my fiancé. Not what I had planned but it could have been so much worse if I didn’t know the basics of protecting myself.) I hope my kids will wait to have sex. However, I’m a realist and I’d rather they have all the info they need to stay safe, healthy and come to me for help, when they decide to take that step, married or not.

You're not wrong, Tarsha! I was 8 when I got "the talk". My mom was awesome about making sure I was educated properly! I followed her example and educated my kids as soon as they were old enough to understand; before they started puberty. I even had the benefit of my college textbooks (you'd be amazed how well a child can follow that material, if guided) and the internet. My eldest is a young adult now, and my youngest is a teenager. I have no worries about unexpectedly becoming a grandmother.
