Xtool D1 Pro 20W - Is this the best laser of 2022?

Xtool has ramped up the competition by adding a 20W diode laser module to their line-up. Not only can this new unit chop through thicker wood, but it engraves like a champ. So is the Xtool D1 Pro the absolute best laser you can buy in 2022? It just might be, and may even make it onto the radar of some entry-level CO2 laser buyers too.

*Great review as usual Steve!* The only real problem I have with xTool is there frequency on the lasers are just a few nm off the standard 455. And since these are engraving machines, you loose the 5-10%, and even sometimes higher low power engraving range, which negatively affects grayscale and dither, the two most popular image modes. If I can't dial in the 5-100% sweet spot for my photo engraving, it's a no-go for me. There is no low power threshold on the 455nm wavelength. It outputs from 1-100%, unlike the Co2. BTW, YT keeps unsubscribing me! I think I have subscribed 5x now! 😒

Hi Steve, thanks again for the review. I really love this video. Just a hopefully quick question about using the laser for cutting. When using a CO2 laser there is a general consensus to limit the power to 80% to extend the lifespan of the tube. Should diode lasers also be limited to 80% or any other value?
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Жыл бұрын
Well I won't say that 80% power will extend the life of your tube, but there are times when you need that power. Most lasers are calibrated so that 100% in something lie Lightburn is actually a safe power level. On my DIY laser I tuned it so that a 100% power selection is actually about 90% In diode laser I assume reducing power will extend the life of the laser module, though I suppose it depends how close the manufacturer gets to the actual limits.

To be clear, this has been an ongoing restriction in Xtool lasers since they started supporting Lightburn - not just the 20W laser. They would no doubt aguing, somewhat successfully, that their laser is perfect, and indeed if you use their free software it would. But if you are running an engraving business or using their lasers professionally, you will want to run Lightburn. If you aren't creating anything that needs hyper-accuracy, you won't care, since the laser is accurate to within a millimetre by default, but if you want sub-millimetre accuracy then you need to do a few tricks to work around it.

Question: on your speed/power test board, the 20% columns have pretty different results where the speeds overlap (esp 7K and up). I'm new to this, so... If this variability is consistent, how do you cope with it? Thanks.

I noticed this too. I will verify my Lightburn project, but I have seen some strange behaviors with the most recent version of Lightburn. Their own power vs speed tool only works half the time. Steve, I appreciate your videos. They are extremely helpful. I do have a quick question. I have the xtool 10 watt and I also have an 80 watt omtech. I can cut 1/4 inch poplar with no problem on my xtool running at 100 percent power at 2mm/second. Why does the 80 watt co2 struggle to do the same cut at same speed at 65 percent power of 80 watts? The 80 watt is new, aligned and running an industrial chiller. It just seems strange to me that a 10 watt diode is giving an 80 watt co2 any competition at all. By the way, both are running air assist as well. Thanks in advance for your advice.
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Жыл бұрын
It’s always a good question and it has to do with laser wavelength and energy density. Depending on the material, the laser energy may be absorbed or reflected. Diode laser wavelength is typically around 455nm, which wood fibre absorbs especially well - better than co2 laser light. By contrast your omtech laser emits light at 10600nm and doesn’t absorb as well in the wood fibre, but is absorbed much better by denser material like acrylic - even when it’s transparent. Now energy density is the next factor and this has to do in part with the beam size. Diode lasers tend to have much smaller beam sizes - typically 0.1 square millimeters or less. CO2 laser beams at the material can be twice that size or even more. So if you assume that each laser is emitting 1W, the diode laser has at least 4 times the energy hitting any given spot under its beam when compared to your co2. This is why a 20W diode laser appears to do a similar job as an 80W co2 laser on some materials. However CO2 lasers tend to cut faster than Diode lasers due to lots of extra power heating up a larger area on the material. This is why there is no ideal laser. If you want to cut acrylic and engrave stainless steel you may want both types of lasers unless you are willing to do extra work on the material. This would be a great place for Russ Sadler to chime in with a less simplistic view.😁
